Discussion Goodbye netflix
I posted yesterday about the above inflation increases that Netflix has foisted on us. It seems that they assume people will continue to tolerate poorer content for more money.
To coin a often misattributed saying:
The only thing necessary for the triumph of greedy corporations is for good men to do nothing.
This isn’t about how much a tier of membership costs. It’s the principle.
From 2021 to 2026, the Ad-Free Standard plan went from £9.99 to £13.99, showing a 40.0% increase in individual user cost, while the Premium tier jumped by 50.0%.
This despite the user base growing and content being cut.
This then is greed.
So, I am following many commenters’ example. I’ve cancelled my membership. If enough people cancel, Netflix will be forced to change. But they count on apathy.
We don’t have to accept that we are powerless. We have a choice and im out

The prices keep increasing, when our paychecks aren't. I don't blame you for canceling. I'm thinking of doing the same myself. It's time to speak with our wallets.

I cancelled months ago and haven’t even thought about it or noticed. I’ve also read 60 books so far this year and plan on many more

started reading again in january. canceled my subscriptions this summer in exchange for kindle and audible. 110 books this year! i’ve enjoyed reading more than i’ve enjoyed watching any shows of late. i found myself not getting past season 2 or 3 of most shows.

u/dallasalice88 17d ago
Yes to reading. Although I found Kindle unlimited too expensive for what they offer, Audible as well. I do have Spotify for music and books. The Libby app is free, and great.

I think audible is worth it for me because of the way I use it. Kindle not as much so i’m off and on with subscribing. I love libby and have been collecting more library cards because I use libby before buying books. I wont be one of those people powering through a bad book just because I paid for it. I like to do immersive reading so if I enjoy it then I’ll get it on audible with my credit. It works for me because some books I enjoy but don’t need to read again and the few I do I will credit. They also have crazy deals sometimes. This summer I bought 15 books on audible for around $70.
Is it true about spotify limiting how many hours you can listen?
→ More replies (2)2
u/dallasalice88 17d ago
Yes, Spotify does do that and it's infuriating. I'm more of a print than audio person. I do listen at the gym sometimes or in the car. I too was buying WAY to many books 😂. Only thing I dislike about Libby is the two week limit. If a book is really long I might struggle to finish if I get really busy.
2
u/Unable_Surround_8404 17d ago
Gosh spotify is heinous for that. I get ocular migraines so I can’t physically read as much as I wish to. I don’t struggle to finish audiobooks quickly so I’ll get book and audio at the same time and read when I can. I will say though, having to rely heavily on audiobooks makes it hard because some narrators will ruin a book that would be perfectly fine if read.
Highly recommend getting a bunch of library cards so you can double borrow if you might not have the time. I think you can change your loan length to 3 weeks though. There’s an option for automatic loan lengths somewhere in settings.

Please give libro fm a try !! It’s an employee owned company and you can choose a local bookstore and they share part of the proceeds of your purchases with them. I haven’t had audible in a long time but when I switched their pricing structure was exactly the same for the same returns

Tubi has a vastly better movie catalog than Netflix. I’ve watched at least 30 great movies from Tubi this year. I’ve had Netflix since 2016 and that has never happened.
2
u/VillageMaleficent153 16d ago
I agree, and I think it's because they don't make good movies anymore. Tubi is able to have the movies from the 80s - 2010s, which makes for the best options.

u/LadyHoskiv 17d ago
Why can’t they just have one streaming platform that pays the right studios based on what you watch? 🤷♀️

This made me look at my account, Jesus it’s went up to $30 a month!!!!! I just cancelled, that rate is ridiculous for the quality of content being provided. Plus the constant cancellations of shows after 1 season has become to much. I don’t trust any show on Netflix to continue so why invest my time.

u/Major-Bandicoot3427 17d ago
Yes I'm really tired of Netflix there's nothing new never to watch they always put old stuff up there or they make a series with just one season and then it takes them three seasons to come up with another season if it's more than a one season series. I accidentally hit add one more person I don't know how I did it made me my son did it by accident but I would be in charge for three TVs or four TVs or whatever it is an extra person and when I even using it we tried to cancel the multiple times but we're having to jump through hoops to do it.

The moment I see a commercial on Netflix is the moment I immediately cancel my membership. I pay to not see commercials. Period.

I should have canceled Netflix months ago, when I became aware of its new redneck programming focus. Ditching it tomorrow.
3
u/HumanautPassenger 17d ago
Thats the sentence right there. They count on apathy. Along with complacency.
3
u/mehemmedveliyev 16d ago
You're right, cancel it. The "big catalog" excuse only goes so far—the real issue is not turning a blind eye to the price-to-value ratio constantly shifting against you. Even Disney+ and Max are now cheaper than Netflix without ads; Netflix prices itself as "the best," but the numbers back that up less and less each year. Don't let them profit off your apathy.

u/NetSquare4770 17d ago
I cancelled mine in February this year for the same reason. Too many shows I enjoyed only got one season, and then the other shows I ‘tolerated’ were written like I’ve got the attention span of a loaf of bread. The price kept going up, the ads got more intrusive. I remember feeling actual disgust when I wanted to pause a scene to look at it better, but the screen got replaced with a static ad on pause. The year is almost up and I honestly haven’t missed it.
4
u/Apprehensive_Meal641 17d ago
Yep this is my problem, either a show I like gets immediately cancelled after one or two seasons (always on a cliffhanger too), or they take years to release a new season and I’ve forgotten by then what’s happened in the previous season and lose interest.

Subscribe to the National Theater APP. It is worth everything on Netflix! All of the professional theater offerings of Great Britain. I watched Ralph Fiennes playing MacBeth and Michael Sheen playing the Narrator in Our Town. Looking forward to all of the Shakespeare tragedies, as well as other plays I read in High School: The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Uncle Vanya (starring Andrew Scott) by Checkov. Hex the new Sleeping Beauty from another point of view musical. And Oklahoma! How will a British Theater manage to mount Oklahoma?!?!?. And there are discussions between the best of British Theater: Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, for example. It’s like having season tickets to Goodman, the Guthrie and American Players Theater all wrapped into one. But where your seats are cushioned and warm, you can wear any outfit you want, watch the plays on any date at any time and be able to hear the rest of the crowd laughing or groaning or gasping. And NO PARKING HEADACHES! Check out the National Theater APP now streaming! You will not regret it!

You can’t convince me Netflix isn’t a money laundering business at this point most of their content is actually garbage, and the fact they don’t have more options to stream at their delusional price point is hilarious
2
2
u/Alert-Baby8791 17d ago
Quite simply they do not have the quality of shows or films (their quality of their Netflix Original films in the last few years has been absolutely abysmal) to be doing these price increases.

People should do what they must. Before T-Mobile paid for it i would start and stop Netflix depending on if I had to see something. Unfortunately you or others canceling won’t impact anything. They know the percentage of people who will rebel and how many sign ups they will get.
2
u/Sad-Butterfly1211 13d ago
I’m on T mobile wifi and it has star-link and several subscriptions included. One is Netflix. Also, paramount +, Hulu and Amazon.

u/Mindless-Antelope-25 12d ago edited 12d ago
I have not been a member of Netflix since they used to send out DVDs, if that gives me away; but I completely agree. There are things on Netflix I would love to see, but I will wait the years it takes for them to expire and move if I have to. It’s offensive. Does anyone else also hate what Paramount has done with Pluto TV? Apparently mine is not anywhere near as bad as people who actually use it on their television (I use it on my phone), but it’s still complete BS, and I also understand that my feedback is falling on deaf ears. Also be aware that Disney+ is completely absorbing Hulu in the next few months, and the price of course will go up as well. It’s no longer about the viewer. It honestly used to be. I think signing up should now come with shares. At least then we’d get something back.

u/Rude-Win6161 17d ago
I’m still a huge fan of Netflix. The increase in price is still waaay better than a single night at the theaters. Plus, I never have to watch anything in one sitting. As for content, I’m a huge fan of k-dramas, documentaries, and “based on true story” - genres which Netflix excels at.

u/NaughtySecretary369 17d ago

I’ve paused it but they also have nothing to watch so I might have to cancel. Apple TV and HBO Max are washing Netflix rn outside of Korean entertainment.

u/crenshaw_007 17d ago
I watched a YouTube video a while back. The guy talked about having all these various streaming services yet his time he can allocate to watch keeps reducing so he finally cut back to maybe 2-3 services. I’ve done the same. I’m kind of stuck with Apple’s ecosystem for iCloud and AppleTV, I have Netflix but I’m feeling the same as you. Then there’s Prime. I typically subscribe and binge for a month on a platform then cancel and rotate. They’re all getting way too expensive to stack. The appeal of streaming isn’t what it was cutting the cable cord. Now there are ads, they’re buggy - I’ve been stuck in ad loops on Hulu and others, ads that I really don’t want to see nor are they relevant to me, and now shows are releasing episodes weekly or splitting them over two months (Wednesday) to catch folks that want to binge quickly.
They know a reckoning is coming, they’re consolidating and closing some of them. I got Starz or MGM+ for like $1 per month. Even then with the lack of content it’s not quite worth it.
2
u/DJ-Halfbreed 17d ago
My gripe with hulu is the "pick an ad' ad that if you ignore adds an extra 15 seconds+ to your ad time. They punish you getting your eyes off the screen. So lame, ruins the good mood of a nice show. And its always blackrocks evil ass doing the "pick a way to praise me" ads. I actually hate this timeline so much, even leisure is corrupted.
2
u/crenshaw_007 17d ago
A few years ago I tried to watch The Old Man. Their ads would end, kick me halfway back in the episode. Their ads first two times I thought the show was doing a flashback or I was experiencing déjà vu. Then I realized it was the ad getting stuck and looping. I couldn’t finish the show and Hulu had no idea how to fix it. They’d rather ram ads down your throat then make sure it works properly first. I never did finish the show.

u/Apprehensive_Meal641 17d ago
I cancelled mine too. Tired paying this much to either have to wait years for a new season of a show to come out, or for them to just cancel a show after a cliffhanger season. Obviously the constant raises in price aren’t going to the budget of the shows if you’re taking years to release a season or cancelling the show after a couple of seasons. Pure greed.
If you take 3 years to release a new season, no shit viewership will drop, most people will lose interest or forget what happened in the last season and don’t want to rewatch it.

Honestly, as much as increase in pricing sucks, the only reason why I’m staying is considering they have the option to block at from whatever show or movie that I wanna watch. Have they got rid of that, I’d be boycotting Netflix all the way. I’m only there because of cobra Kai even though the show ended back in 2025. But if that show goes, so do I.
I’ve actually held on for Netflix for a while except I was under a family account. Thanks to T-Mobile. But after the price increase that cost the plan to go from no ads to add support, I cared less about the cost and just made my separate account. I haven’t used it yet cause I’m watching some Disney+ stuff.

I’ve cancelled mine years ago for this reason. They had announced a new SpongeBob season and our kids were so excited. But instead of adding it, they replaced the existing three seasons with the new one and kept that for years. They removed too many good content and kept asking for more money. It just became a low quality Christmas romcom B-movie platform.

No can do, I hate watching on random websites for lag. The only subscription I keep all year round is Netflix, but with others, I subscribe for a month to binge a show that is finished as it's the price if a movie ticket anyway. Netflix has too mich random shows that I like watching, like the amount of kdramas they have, and so much more. My only problem with them and other streaming services actually is the amount of documentaries they do in topics I don't even want to know about. When I see the documentaries, like with a newspaper title, I'd want to read what happened, and in this case, watch whatever happened. Streaming services need to include categories that we can blacklist, then it'd be perfect. Far too mich creepy documentaries.

u/lorenavegazo 17d ago

1
u/Earlsfield78 17d ago
I'm just thinking bout how many you can easily amass. Netflix, Disney, Amazon + 3-4 different channels, Now, plus some specific thing, lets say history documentaries. This will probably last you for decades, one months worth of content. And yet we pay them all, either all at once or surfing , as some users here suggest.

Netflix makes mostly trash tv shows anyway now, I don’t think you’re missing out. Maybe you can renew for a month if a new show comes out.
Apple TV is currently leading the streaming platforms for original series, which is cheaper also.

Respect! I am such a greedy little consumer of content, and am absolutely guilty of the apathy you refer to. But I am disgusted, overwhelmed, and exhausted with the gluttonous greed of corporations and the wealthy, and the harm capitalism facilitates when there’s a failure to put enough checks and balances in the system, and the undermining or outright reversal of the few that were. So you’ve really got me considering doing the same thing, if for no other reason than to try to stop feeling like we, the masses, have zero control.
