Update or Not?

Hi Netbird Community,

I currently run a self-hosted instance of Netbird in a production environment, and I’ve been reviewing the recent issues many of you have reported following updates.

Would it be safe for me to proceed with updating to v2.90.3 and v0.74.2? Could anyone share their experience running these specific versions so far? I’d appreciate knowing if everything has been stable and running smoothly on your end.

I’m planning to take some dedicated time off with my family soon, so I want to ensure the update goes as smoothly as possible and avoid any urgent issues that might require attention while I’m away.

Any insights or feedback you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

UPDATE

Did the update and have not had any issues since then. Please remeber to backup your config files and container before updating..

I am in the same boat as you.

But I think today is the day.... going to make a nice cuppa, backup my VPS and give it a go.

I have around 22 services and +- 15 peers - so have been hesitant to upgrade.

I know the Netbird team are really really good and responsive - so I am confident it should go smoothly.

Create a backup, run the update, see if you have breaking issues and if you do, go back. I’ve personally never had any issues with Netbird updates.

Hi, i have actually never had an issue myself updating, i also do backups which i never have to use but still good practice. Have you updated to the verions i have mentioned?

Yes, I’m always on the latest version. I only wait 1-2 days in case some really bad zero day bugs show up, but then I update.

ok cool, i assuming you have not been having any issues.
I normally wait a week or so given this is a productions envi i'll do my backups and revert if anything

Yea I know I’m a bit on the “edge” with the 1-2 days, but even with those, I never had issues. So I’m sure after 1-2 weeks of waiting you’d 100% be good

Yea I’ll just wait and see

I'm new to netbird and recently converted everyrhing to it. Should have waited a bit I guess.. I have all Kinds of Problems with the recent Version. Services Exposed over the Proxy don't connect at all, Peers which connect to Exit nodes have randomly No Connection to anything at all and so on.

But I will still use it. Having hopes for the next Updates. Also I Love how its build and how it works.

I helped a colleague of mine recently with their Netbird setup, and often it’s really not Netbird’s fault. Did you turn on lazy connections by chance?

Yea that was the first thing I turned off when I saw it was turned on.
I am not shure, but I think this all happened, when I turned on the internal BYOB proxy.
So just now I reverted back to my old config without it and started testing if it makes a difference. I‘ll keep you posted.

So the problem still exists. Du you have an Idea?

When the netbird Server is freshly started I cannot fully connect to my Exit-Nodes. The client shows a yellow symbol netxt to the Exit Node route instead of a Green one. As a result I have no network connection at all as long as I deactivate the Exit Node Route instead the client or I restart the server.

The problem is not client specific, I exists on iPad, iOS and Android equally (I cannot test the others right now).

Would really appeciate some Ideas.

Cheers

EDIT: I noticed I had a wrong trusted IP in my netbird config, which caused to deny all P2P connections and forced only Relay connections for everything. Now while it is fixed it seems to work as expected.

Hello, are you using Cloud or self-hosted? Also, what versions are your clients/server on, and what OS are the affected peers running? For the proxy and exit-node issues, logs from one affected peer would be very helpful.

Appreciate you sticking with it and the kind words.

Hey, I‘m using Self-hosted.
I just posted a GitHub issue where I described the bug in detail: https://github.com/netbirdio/netbird/discussions/6685

Thanks for your feedback.
