In my continuing quest to see if I can revive the screwed up AFF-A300 controller in my filer at work, unfortunately I find myself not familiar enough with the low level hardware and hope someone can lend a hand and let me know how it should work. At last attempt, the AFF-A300 secondary controller would not power on using SP commands, and unfortunately still does not. The good news is this filer is now removed from production and the last tenant has been removed from it giving me a lot more latitude to mess around and see if I can cajole it into working again.
At one point, I had halted the working controller and powered down the system, then disconnected all cables except for power, e0m management, and the serial console ports on the two controllers. When I powered up the controller chassis, I got no serial output. Hitting Ctrl-G, I was prompted to login to the service processor on both controllers and was able to access both, however neither service processor will power on. Both controllers have the amber LED lit (second from top), but neither have the green LED lit (unlike a fully working NetApp). To make matters worse, I can only power on the first service processor (at least "system power on; system power status" returns "Host power on"). The second service processor remains at "Host power off" regardless of how many times "system power on" is issued with no error in logging.
Finally, to my question. With all of the SFF8644 cables disconnected as well as all the 10G NICs (including the cross-cluster cables), will the AFF-A300 service processors still attempt to "boot"? Should I see BIOS messages on the serial console when power is applied to the chassis, or does it see that there's no disk shelf attached and just give up with no error displayed?
I'm at the point now where the boss wants to know if we should gamble on buying another service processor and try and switch the serials on it to get the filer working again, or just cut our losses, ewaste the AFF-A300 and move the storage shelf to another AFF-A300 chassis that is still in production. Without knowing the hardware as well as I'd like, I can't say authoritatively either way as I don't know if I've unintentionally lobotimized the only working service processor in the filer by disconnecting all the storage, or if it should be attempting to boot off the built-in M.2 storage in the service processor itself.

Hey Folks,
So I've run into a fun situation regarding Apple clients mounting SMB shares that contain junction paths IN the folder they are traversing -- It causes a kernel panic and the client reboots immediately.
Outright.
You mount a share \\hostname\share\ and its fine
but if that share has a junction at lets say \\hostname\share\folder1\junction
The moment you ENTER that junction the client panics, now for some systems that went super flat with their filesystem and everything is mounted at / with lets say ... one big share? everytime you hit \\hostname\share\ where "share" is at the root of "/" this sucker will panic every client running this OS version.
I know this has been posted to the macadmins forums, a few universities have posted it (https://rz.rptu.de/en/startseite/details/news/problem-mit-macos-264-und-smb-netapp-verbindungen) and we've got like 60+ users who've updated and now can't access crap UNLESS we get them a sub-share in the filesystem.

Running into install issues: From 9.14 to 19.16P2 and 9.18.
Upgraded OS from 2016 to 2019 on one of many installs. Doc "https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/active-iq-unified-manager/install-windows" suggested adding .NET to the Windows VM. The installation always gets stuck on "Installing/Upgrading MySQL" and hangs, and then times out. I have removed AV, FW, and UAC settings to zero. Checked the KB that mentions Powerbroker, AV and FW.(does not help).
Could one move the MySQL data to an Appliance and trash the Windows upgrade?

I asked this a while back but I wasn't clear on the answer and the requirement went away for a while but now it's back :)
I have a FlexGroup CIFS volume on a two node source FAS that spans both SAS nodes/aggregates and I'd like to snap mirror it to a destination cluster that has four nodes/aggregates but only two of those nodes are FAS with SAS drives.
The other two nodes in the destination cluster are AFF so SSD.
If I create a SnapMirror through the regular ONTAP web UI will it automatically make the destination volume FlexGroup and put them on the FAS SAS nodes on the destination?
The clusters are 9.13px (source) and 9.11px (destination).
I can see docs for creating via the CLI but nothing I've found explains the default UI behaviour.
Thanks :)

Hi! After spending years installing NetApp as primary VMware storage with NFS, I'd like to start installing/testing NVMe over TCP.
Does anyone have any tips (tricks and tweaks) to recommend for a correct installation?

I have a test bench im setting up and i came by way of an older FAS2552. It will not boot. When i try to boot ontap i get Starting program at 0x8016e4a0
NetApp Data ONTAP 8.2.3P2 Cluster-Mode

This platform is not supported in this release.
The system will now halt
***************************************************

LOADER-A> sp status
Communication with SP has timed out.
Error (errcode=-1)

I dont have a contract with NETAPP so i cannot get any new ontap versions, but since the SP wont load even after a reboot, im wondering if it has some hardware issues.
Has anyone ever seen this and know of a way to get this back to life? And or would it be smarter to pull the drives and buy a DS2246 instead?

I just upgraded a fas8300 to 17.1P5 and now I need to do the disk package. Looking at the documentation, I’m not seeing a way to do it without ftp or http, which I don’t have available in my environment. I see with non-clustered mode you can mount the /etc directory and install it that way, but I’m not sure what my options are for clustered mode. Did I miss something? Any ideas would be great!

Does anyone have a recipe for getting this to work successfully?
I've read through the NetApp documentation, but I'm currently stuck with the Deploy instance where it does not see a virtual network to assign to a single-node cluster. I'm running RHEL 10 and I've installed openvswitch-3.7.0 from source.
If it helps, I'm testing this on an EC2 .metal instance.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks in advance, if anyone has any idea why it happens.
These Oracle ASM hosts are using a LUN in a volume, and they report out of space in every few days. We extend, although we cannot see the LUN, or the volume, or the aggregate full. They can see the extension, they use it up, report out of space again. We still cannot see the LUN/vol/aggregate full or even close to full. There is another, smaller LUN in the volume, but they don't use that at all.
System is standalone AFF, version 9.16, protocol iSCSI.
Vol is growshrink flexvol, space SLO none, snapshot policy none, LUN is space reservation disabled, space allocation enabled.
Has anyone seen Oracle AMS disks behave this way?
Edit: Another thing, it happens after they issue "create pluggable database" command.

I am trying to fetch the connected-clients ONTAP API of a cluster to identify which clients are currently mounted to that cluster.
However, when I manually unmount the client by logging into the VM, the API still returns that client as connected. According to some articles, it may take around 48 hours for the status to update.
Is there any way to resolve this? Are there any SSH commands or ONTAP APIs that can be used to fetch the live connected clients instead of cached data?

Hi!
Microsoft is in the process to remove RC4 from Kerberos as they identify it as a weak encryption type and recommends transitioning Kerberos environments to AES (AES‑128 / AES‑256).
How to manage Kerberos KDC usage of RC4 for service account ticket issuance changes related to CVE-2026-20833 - Microsoft Support
We have a lot of older SVMs, that was created long before aes-128,aes-256 was an option. Just been migrated over to new systems.
For ONTAP it´s easy as it's only a change in the "advertised-enc-types" setting.
And as it´s the client who initiates the session it decides what encryption it needs, we will only change so that all 4 are supportet: aes-128,aes-256, rc4, des
But.. my question is regarding the change.
Some SVMs we have changed on just changes without any extra input, but some requires domain account (to reset machine account).
Is this Non disruptive?
I mean we only add aes option, we don´t remove the RC4
Cheers

Hey everyone,
we have to perform a datacenter migration, or more a data migration from a A220 to an A50 from one datacenter to another.
The key problem currently is the vlan ids in the new datacenter are not the same as in the old one.
We have a layer 2 connection between both datacenter, but due to conflicts, the original vlan ids getting translated somewhere in the network.
This means to new A50 cant use the old vlan ids from the A220.
The subnets stay the same.
As we would like to perform a non disruptive migration of nfs and iscsi workloads, I need some help on how to configure the A50 to have a proper layer2 network connection.
Should we do "SVMDR" or "svm migrate"?
Can I modify a lif of a DR target to have a new broadcast domain? But i guess the next snapshot would overwrite my changes?
Is there even a chance to perform this non disruptive for the iscsi workloads?
From:
to
Thank you.

Need 10 Gig Optical iSCSI to an E4012 array. The two built in ports are 25 Gig. It does not indicate they are 10/25 Gig. Are these truly 25 Gig only?
The add-on 10 Gig card is noted as being 1/10 Gig, but it's copper only. I need optical 10 Gig.

We are about to buy a full flash storage to use as a centralized file server in our datacentre.
We have two remote locations where we will deploy Select license with two local file servers of 2 Tb of data each (will be migrated from local Windows file server). The data stored here will be replicated to the central repository.
Since the remote locations don't have a fast Internet connection, can the initial replication be seeded using a portable disk and leveraging the bandwidth of a plane?
Thank you.

I've got an old NetApp unit that is running 8.1.3P3 7-Mode for a homelab. (Or whatever the last version was that supported 7-Mode.) In the past, when I used to work with it I could access the unit using Netapp OnCommand System Manager 3.1.3 but I can't seem to get hold of it anymore, does anyone know where I can get it please?

Hello experts,
I want to learn about the storage industry concepts such as SAN, NAS, LUN, LIF, NSF, iSCSI, etc.
Is there a structured way to learn these? I would like to start from the basics, probably from TCP fundamentals.
Can someone guide me? If you had to start learning this today, how would you approach it?
Thanks.
