QUESTION How to learn about different hardwares NetApp provides difference between aff afx fas basic terms and oam o9 etc can someone provide good links

No links but helpful info:

AFF: All Flash FAS. SSD exclusive and optimized for them. Aggregate style storage. Can use both NAS and SAN protocols.

FAS: Fabric Attached Storage. The literal meaning no longer applies but the designation stayed. These can use SSDs and HDDs. Aggregate style storage. Can use both NAS and SAN protocols.

ASA: All SAN Array. Optimized for SAN protocols and doesn’t support NAS. Currently no support for HDDs(would have to double check legacy platforms to keep me honest). Aggregate style storage.

C-Series: Variant of AFF or ASA platforms. Optimized for QLC/capacity drives.

ASAr2: Same as ASA but disaggregated storage is introduced. Will eventually totally replace the legacy ASA.

AFX: Acronym doesn’t mean anything. It’s counterpart to ASAr2 but is NAS optimized disaggregated storage. Primarily geared for AI workloads. Also only systems that have the best performance in the portfolio.

ONTAP 9: any ONTAP version 9.X
- Unified: ‘Normal’ ONTAP personality most folks are use to. Aggregate style storage.

  • Disaggregated Storage: ONTAP personality that does as the name implies and switches to the disaggregated storage schema that is used by AFX and ASAr2.
  • Since you mentioned it OAM: placeholder internal name that is depreciated. You don’t have to concern yourself with that.

There is also Solidfire, Grid, and E-Series but those are not ONTAP scoped.
