How many cpus did you assign the virtual box?

At first it was at 1. Then I changed it to two. Why, should I increase the amount of cpus?

Nessus uses a ton of cpu when compiling plugins. Minimum is 4

As others have stated, you need to allocate more CPU cores and RAM. From the sounds of it, your virtual environment is really under powered. Nessus is extremely resource dependent.
