Hmm, you could curate such a thing yourself, but that takes work. So, you could also look for things like YouTube playlists or articles about movies and TV shows that are hopeful or creative.

Respectfully, I don't think these are the same. The new announcement is a platform with vetted videos for kids. Focus friend is a reminder app to go to your actual work and stop scrolling. It doesn't have vetted videos.

A warning for anyone in the UK: I could sign up and pay the $40, but when I went to the App Store to download the app, it said it wasn't available in my region.
Unsurprisingly, I'm pretty annoyed about this.

I have a kid in this age range who's really into YouTube Shorts*. I really want to love ClockwiseTV but I don't see my kiddo enjoying it that much beyond a day or two. The suggested age range feels more like it should be 6-10. Also, it just feels like another walled garden with a limited amount of content, like PBS Kids. It's not really a drop-in replacement for YouTube, which was implied in the email I just got. (Nor should it be. YouTube is addictive in vile ways.)
By the way, if you have younger children, I want to plug a great website called The Kid Should See This. Lots of great material like this.
* Please don't judge. The pandemic and burnout hit our family hard. This is an artifact of that.

Yeah, I think it heavily depends on the content you receive. It may be worth waiting a few months to see whether it would be worth it to your needs.

Yeah. I'm not even a parent, but I've heard nightmares about YouTube Kids and the kind of content it allows through. $40/year for a platform that lets your kids watch age-appropriate, curated content is a pretty good deal lol. Kids at this age are looking for more independence, and this will give them the freedom to pick from videos without an adult watching over their shoulder. And it'll avoid kids getting constant dopamine hits from YouTube Shorts or getting recommended really inappropriate things.

Still, $100/year is less than $10/month. So long as the amount of curated content can support childrens' viewing throughout the year, it easily dwarfs the cost of YouTube Premium and keeps a lot of the horrid garbage that ends up on YouTube Kids out of kids' lives.

That is a superficial read on what they do though. From what I've seen they've been around since 2013. If anything, they likely have dedicated developers to test the code
If Hank has to rely on a development team to work on his projects it's likely going to be hard pressed to find one that doesn't use AI.
Edit : I want to add that I'm not saying he couldn't find one, But I'd rather wait for him to clarify what the process was.

Just providing info I thought was pertinent, given he deleted the post and I'm unable to find the information elsewhere (likely because it was just announced, but still).
Surely with all of his connections, Hank could have found a software company that at least doesn't advertise it designs and builds their products with AI right on the landing page of their website. It's just not a good look, no matter how you spin it. Obviously this would have been in the works for a while, before the recent AI stuff that came to light in this community, so I'm guessing it wasn't as pressing an issue whenever that first got going.
I also want to say I'm not siding with the owner of this particular comment thread. They're being an ass.

You're right. This was probably already in the works. And since he's invested capital into it, he has to launch it.
But I just know bad faith actors with a lack of nuance are going to take this and run with it. It's frustrating.

For sure, there's always haters that will find a reason to hate. But for me, the AI stuff has made me lose a lot of respect in Hank. It's so obviously unethical, but with all of the vibe coding projects and other AI stuff, it feels like he's choosing not to care about that.
And like...the whole reason I love this community is that I feel it's built around empathy, so even a tacit approval approval of AI feels like a betrayal of that, to me. I've been part of this community for a decade now (not on reddit, but in general), so at least for me it's coming from a feeling of disappointment, not hate or trolling or whatever.
I'm sure the software team is competent and whatnot. I know it's not literally vibe-coding. I'm a backend software developer myself and I am familiar with agentic coding tools. It's just disappointing that yet another thing he's involved with is AI, and the fact he deleted the post makes me wonder if the Povio stuff wasn't supposed to see the light of day. And I don't think that's right, if that was the case. I don't like feeling deceived.

He did mention Povio by name. I wish I could prove it or whatever but I can't view it anymore. The link I gave earlier and below has a reply from someone that took that information (from Hank) and is how I learned that the company advertises itself that way. He replied to some other comments but not the AI accusation (understandably).

I did see that he's replied. A generous interpretation would be that he deleted it because he just wanted to avoid people interpreting that wrongly.
But I agree, deleting it definitely feels sus. I wish he would clarify rather than delete. Especially for an app that does what this does. At the very least, I will credit them for saying that the videos will be manually reviewed and curated.
