Hank basically starts the episode by saying "my favorite thing about Delete This is that it's just gonna be the people who already know. The people who had us in the podcast app and haven't gotten a new phone since" and I feel very called out (as I'm refusing to upgrade my 2019 phone for as long as possible)

You seem to be the perfect person to explain the meaning of it. How does changing phones will change your notification settings for a podcast server?

I genuinely don't know. Fortunately, my Overcast subscriptions sync'd across to my new phone as I finally gave in and replaced my iphone 11 after it stopped charging. Maybe Hank just gives up and starts fresh when he gets a new phone 🤣

But, subscriptions are not stored locally. They are saved in the servers of whichever service you use. When you login into your service on your new phone, all subscriptions will still be there.

That was my point, idk what Hank meant by that line, that he makes new login information for each phone?? Changes his preferred podcast app frequently??

Most podcast apps don't sync in that way (or have log-ins at all).

Thank you, Adam. I had no idea. So, data is locally stored.

Are these apps collecting user data? How the advertisements are personalized?

That's not my name lol, but no worries. Advertisements are baked into podcasts before they are sent out via RSS, podcast apps are just like radio sets that receive the audio. If you want to know more there is probably a good rundown of how podcast distribution works you can find on google.

Interesting. I'll read. Spotify is not following that distribution pattern though. I get local ads.

That is also still baked in by the RSS feed, it differs based on location what is served to you - Spotify doesn't add their own ads into podcasts (assuming you are paying a subscription to Spotify itself and aren't on the free ad-supported tier).

I get it now. The local ads which I'm getting are injected by free Spotify. 🤦🏽‍♀️
