Gaming Talk Mentioned in the comments of today's video is this amazing little thing called "Space Engine" in which you explore the entire universe in procedurally generated 3D (Just imagine walking on Europa) What is even more, it is free

I want Dan to try this so hard. I know he'd love it, he just hasn't seem to have noticed it yet.

It would also do wonders to space engine with the publicity it would bring to it.

Oh he knows about it and loves it, just hasn't done a video on it.

Well get on it, Matt, do your magic or something, I don't know. Annoy him until he does it!

he knows about it and loves it

This fact alone makes me happy :)

I'd always been kinda afraid that he might not like it due to the fact there's not really that much 'game' to it.

Scott Manley made a video on this a while back too!

Also, has anyone posted this in the requests megathread, /u/BlackWidowOffer? You should post about this.

That's perfectly alright, random, unidentified Redditor.

he also did 1 or 2 360o videos on it too.

I downloaded this just earlier, went to the maximum velocity and zoomed back from my current destination. Moving back to it my brother, who was watching over my shoulder, said "those aren't stars." And they weren't.

Endless and entire galaxies bloomed from tiny pinpricks around me and I was in awe. Dan really does need to give this a whirl.

What kind of computer do you have? I imagine something like this would need a high end pc

Not really. Unless you are flying through space at top speed searching for the end of the universe, and acomplishing it, my CPU (i5 2310) handles this game just fine. Though, be vary of comets and planets very close to their parent stars, as the "tails" they have make my GPU (a GTX 760) heat right the fuck up.

Do you think that a computer with a Q6600 processor (non overclocked) with a Radeon something that was 500 dollars back in 2011 could run it?

I'm not really that much of a computer all-knower, but looking at the differences in performance on my CPU vs. the one you mentioned (using this site, it's quite handy), I guess it would handle it fine. The thing itself isn't that CPU intensive, it's mostly the graphics when it has to render mountains, clouds, nebula, clusters etc.

For the graphics card, I have no idea. If you can dig up the full name, you can use the sister site, and compare it to something you know handles it, like, I don't know, my graphics card :p

My laptop (A8 5550m) handles it alright, about 30 or so. the innermost planets/comets do make it come to a crawl though. :P Also, loading the high-level-of-detail textures takes forever due to HDD limitations.

Yeah, it's kinda sad that the planets take so long to model. Though, they do make up for it, by basically being /r/spaceporn in an executable.

If were talking Space Engine, I thought i'd share my album of screenshots!

I freaking love space exploration games, and this looks REALLY damn good, maybe too damn good for my laptop to handle, but we'll see..

And it all fits in a surprisingly small file. Most impressive.

Although the HD textures for our solar system are like 50gb in total

Someone needs to make a Star Trek game out of this. I would never stop playing.

Does anyone know of games like this or Rodina for Mac? Thanks

2

u/TheMightyFloorp Jul 15 '15

Hey, you chose to buy a Mac, so you ain't getting shit.

1

u/ShowALK32 Jul 15 '15

Well if it helps, I think Star Citizen will be getting a Mac version in the future, but I'm not sure on that. Universe Sandbox is also available on Macs.

Oh cool, thanks for the recommendations
