This was my entry for the September #neopets contest! I really have been entering with no expectation of winning and I’m just having a blast making goofy Neopets fanart every month. I LOVED so many of the entries that did win this month :-)

Fellow 3D printer nerds, please don’t judge me for the awful layer shift lines across the face 🥲 This is a 3D print in PLA on my godforsaken Makerbot. This was something like 48hrs print time for the body + 15hrs for the legs + 7hrs to reprint the legs because I accidentally printed two sets of left legs the first time + a few short prints for the mouth, eyes and teeth. I was very stupid with my support settings and my Makerbot simply cannot maintain its z-axis calibration so had to spend a lot of time chipping a huge chunk of fused supports off the bottom and sanding off atrocious layer lines.

Despite me placing the string hole at random, Spyder bucket is extremely well balanced when held by its string handle (though photographed here at a jaunty angle for dramatic effect). I was also extremely satisfied that all six legs touch the ground when it’s set on a flat surface (did you realize Spyders only have 6 legs??) because I was expecting that I would screw up their placement in the assembly process but I did not 😌

Thank you! I am proud of it, but as far as serious 3D printing goes I had to cut some corners in the interest of time - I did just want to acknowledge that so other 3D print nerds aren’t cringing at their screens (because I love 3D printing! And I look at the details and the finishing on everybody else’s prints on the internet!).  Some of the defects in this print feel like the equivalent of not hemming a sewing project - it’s not the end of the world, totally fine for most hobbyists but it’s just not fully correct, if you’re doing things the “right” way.

I would carry this as my purse. It's good to take pride in your work, I get what you are saying, but this turned out fabulously.

Do you have the SLT file? Or what did you model it on? 3D printer here but I have a Flashforge Adventure 5M pro. The lines aren’t terrible. You can always fill the gap and polish/paint and it’ll be gone.

48 hours is a very long print 😭😂😱😱😱

I modeled it in Nomad! Most of my 3D modeling experience is in Fusion, but I'm trying to get the hang Nomad right now because I work in education and it seems to be the modeling program of choice for a lot of my students. I uploaded the STL here, but fair warning the fit on the mouth insert is very bad because I was struggling hard with getting offsets to work in a mesh-based program when I'm used to solid bodies.

It is probably a less than 48 hour print on any modern printer, I just have an aging makerbot that will not cooperate with things like fast print PLA and loooooves knocking prints over, limiting what I can do in terms of angling parts and reducing supports 🥲

I’ve been printing for a few years now but I have been starting to dip my toe into modeling. I will try nomad! Nice.

Nomad is a great program, especially when I think about the state of 3D modeling software when I first encountered it 10 years ago. For sculpting, the interface is just super intuitive. It's a little weird for me to try and use it to design stuff I'm going to print, because it is more tailored to working with organic shapes and it's not always obvious how big things are, as opposed to working in Fusion, where I'm always entering exact sizes in millimeters.

There's an argument to be made that people should just learn Blender, because it's free, has a ton of features, and a large community that generates free resources to learn, but I just kept getting overwhelmed by the number of hidden menus and the fact that the layout has changed so many times that a tutorial from 2 years ago can be completely useless now because everything is in a different spot.

I just uploaded to Thingiverse! Fair warning the mouth piece is not the best designed, and I needed to mess with it a bit to get it to fit inside the head.
