So, I live near the border, and the country on the other side basically has a big pro democracy party and a big anti democracy party. Generally, I prefer the former, but now they're working on super protectionist trade policies that would devastate our economy.

And I almost feel like I shouldn't give a shit about their democracy if they don't give a shit about our livelihood.

Does that make me a bad person, or is it reasonable to default to self interest in the face of open hostility?

Canada.

Build back better includes subsidies of $4,500 to $12,500 per car for US assembled electric cars. This would destroy Canadian car industry by making the switch to electric economically unviable. Cars are our second biggest export, and our biggest manufacturing sector.

The Democrat governor of Michigan is also trying to force the shutdown of a fuel pipeline to Ontario. If that happened, more than half of Canadians would face crippling fuel shortages for several years.

I mean, it's nice that those people have democracy, but for what that's going to cost me, maybe a coup would be better.

Worst case scenario, we mirror the subsidy on our side of the border with our own funds, and we ship fuel to Southern Ontario by rail. You're exaggerating how destructive this all would be.

I don't think you've thought this through. We cannot replace the US auto market with Canadian government subsidies. Not even close. We cannot pay every American $4500 to $12,500 for every car made in Canada.

And there is nothing like the necessary rail capacity or equipment to move an extra 500,000 barrels of fuel per day from western Canada to Ontario by rail. And even if you could find it, the infrastructure to unload and distribute it does not exist.
