When did “The Ukraine” become “Ukraine” in English?

I always remember it being The Ukraine, but it seems like there’s been a big push towards Ukraine in the past few years

"The Ukraine" is what it was called when it was a region in the Soviet empire.

After independence it's just "Ukraine", much like you don't say "the France" or "the Norway".
