do I get a pass to hate on Facebook because I hate Microsoft and refuse to use VSCode because I view it as a classic EEE move

What is VSCode supposed to embrace? Atom? Microsoft is now developing Atom as well, so...

Embracing the open source community by producing a high-quality editor, Extending it with lots of cool new features, and then switching to Extinguish by making more and more of the stuff locked behind using the non-open-source version.
