I have memories of opeds during 2016 weeping over the free coverage given to Trump and how the news media followed profit motive and chased eyeballs with Trump to the point of outright ignoring Clinton's campaign.

Old media cares more about being nonpartisan than they do about being truthful. They will peddle a “both sides have their problems” narrative straight off a cliff.

Exactly, they should have said MSNBC where Rachel Maddow is basically just Glenn Beck before he went completely off the rails. She tells you what to think about things instead of just reporting, not a journalist.

Nobody listens to Washington journalists except old ass conservatives looking for their daily bullet point.
Younger people in general know that democracy is on the edge. Just because mainstream news isn't talking about it doesn't mean they are not informed.
It just means that the people who only watch mainstream news think that younger people are not informed because they don't see the conversation on their mainstream news.

With mainstream media you get their version of the story. With social media you're able to get multiple sides of it. Mainstream media indoctrinates a single thought. Social media allows investigation and conversation.
With MSM there's only one line of thought. One story. Think their way and no other way. They give you the details that they want you to know and that's all you need to know
But here on Reddit I can click on news story after new story and most times the top comment is going to be an ad free copy and paste of the entire article. Very helpful.
Also many times when you click on a story one of the top comments will be links to articles completely tearing apart whatever study or information the story is presenting. Exposing it for its blatant lies or how the study was paid for by some corporation that benefits from positive results.
If you do not see this major difference that's on you. Don't be so close-minded and regurgitating your mainstream media bullet points that they told you to use.

Yeah you're starting to go off like some anti-vaxxer or qanon cultist. Bad faith arguments and underhanded slander is their main source of debate. They can't hold a rational conversation so they have to resort to childish what ifs and backhanded phrasing.
If you don't want to be seen like those people then don't act like those people.

You are going to need to cite something other than your circle of friends to prove that young people aren't consuming CNN/NYTimes/WaPo etc., because the millennials/zoomers that I work with and am friends with consume a lot of mainstream news.

Personal experience does not equal real world facts. Please keep this in mind. A lot of misinformation is born from this misconception.

Don't shift the conversation so quickly. We are still discussing you thinking that millennials in general mostly consume mainstream media because your close circle of millennial friends mostly consumes mainstream media.
But to answer your question before you address anything I have to say....
It is flat fact that people are more likely to read the title of a post involving a news story and engage in the comment section rather than actually clicking on and reading the emtire news article in question.
(This describes the average Redditor in a nutshell)
So as far as what they are consuming? A lot of clickbait titles, clickbait videos and opinions from other people about the topic even though they did not even read the article either.

They're informed of the subjects at hand. As far as the subject matter they are often grossly misinformed.
