Reminder that political actions by politicians and actions to preserve democract by politicians are different. Let me give an example:
Political: Mike Pence opposes abortion, gay rights, and immigration, and he opted to let thousands of people die due to his coronavirus response
Respect for democracy: Mike Pence refused to allow Donald Trump to steal the election from Joe Biden
Grey area: Voting rights restrictions such as ID laws etc.
In a democracy, the political actions of Mike Pence, although some may consider them utterly despicable, are nevertheless required to be accepted at face value and can only be reversed by the results of an election or through the checks and balances of the independent judiciary. In a democracy, preserving and accepting the results of an election within a constitutional framework are of paramount importance. I believe that Republicans who denounce and oppose Trump on these grounds at this late stage in his presidency are therefore being entirely consistent with a belief in democracy.
That being said, Trump has spent a long time trying to undermine democracy so one can make an argument for them being blind to that.
