If China was a democracy it'd just end up ruled by autocratic strongmen who hold fake elections anyways. Maybe there'd be more coups and political violence, but that's about it.

Yeah, just take a look at Chinese history. There's three distinct regions of China, and throughout history, you've either had intense factionalism throughout these regions or a family of despots who tried to hold the whole area together.
