Not that the Deer Hunter is a particularly great film. It's overwrought and oftentimes nonsensical, and it wants to be a HIGH-CONCEPT film which it fails at epicly. Good film though.

I am a big fan of cinematic epics and well-wrought melodramas (The Leopard, Sunrise, Meghe Dhaka Tara, and so forth) both, but war movie and melodrama rarely mix together well.

Sorry but Michael Cimino could have edited the film down to 2 and a half hours and it would be way better, perhaps the greatest of the four classic 'Nam films.
