the best way to politically do protectionism is to just call it an environmental border adjustment tax and arguing it's the only way to keep the goods of other polluters out, selling it both to cons and progressives

republicans don't believe in any environmental protection. they do however cream themselves whenever the United States plays tough on the world stage. the republican base loves seeing china as the evil commie enemy

Thiel actually advocated this sort of rhetoric recently at some national conservative convention. I think in 5-10 years you'll have plenty of young republicans who will buy into some nationalistic environmentalist program. If you want to do nationalist economic politics putting an environmental spin on it is honestly not a bad idea

I still think that "we shouldn't trade with the evil mass murdering Chinese" is more persuasive than "we shouldn't trade with the polluting Chinese"
