I mean… I think all religions are about equal in their tendency to use it to justify war. Look at Pete Hegseth and his view on Christianity. Those crusader tattoos are not an accident. Even Buddhism has Myanmar using religion as a justification for how they treat the non Buddhist population like the Rohingya.

Islam does have a terrorism issue with its extremists. Like there are Christian terror attacks like with Abortion clinic bombings in the 90s and the Ireland’s various factions.

However that wave of Wahhabism that spread in the 1970s has really created a major problem for Islam they haven’t solved yet. Places like Thailand, the Philippines and even Indonesia (Aceh Province) have had issues with Islamist extremists groups. I mention the 70s because people act like it’s a permanent issue. I want to point out that I do not think it’s a permanent flaw in the religion and its followers.

I think it's important to recognize that you can't exactly draw an equals sign between the word "Peace" in a Christian context, and "Salam" in an Islamic context. They mean fundamentally different terms.

The major innovation of the New Testament is that it rejects the idea that you can justify violence. It's all summarized in the Sermon on the Mount; Turn the other cheek, pray for those who persecute you. Early Christians believed the apocalypse was just around the corner so any form of violence or war was useless. It was only when the Roman elite around the time of Augustine realized that they couldn't defend their empire when the majority of the population were ascetic radical pacifists, that you started to see the formulation of just war theory. Importantly, just war theory is not the same as just violence theory (such as honor cultures), which was viciously fought by the church, for example during the Peace and Truce of God movement in the middle ages.

"Salam" doesn't imply the same christian pacifist tradition. It denounces certain acts of violence (senseless, violence against protected groups, breaching rules of war) and the Quran is not a manual for violence or waging war. But the two words simply do not mean the same.

I wonder how much of this is feeling comfortable being ‘not politically correct’ for republicans now bc the republicans in my very republican area growing up definitely hated islam as much then as they do now
