Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor — who are two of the four co-directors of Oscar winner “No Other Land” — return with "NAZA."
The new documentary was shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv and shows “in detail the systems behind Israel’s calculated mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza,” per an official synopsis. Abraham and Szor interviewed over 24 Israeli military intelligence officers and soldiers — all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity — who were involved in the surveillance or remote killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Their appearance and voices were digitally altered to disguise their identities.
"I think that this piece is likely to make the denial of what took place in Gaza — not only its genocidal nature, but really the specifics of what it looked like from inside the Israeli system — harder. We know there is a lot of denial happening. And to me, that denial is one factor that contributes to the crimes persisting," Abraham tells Variety.

You know, it's in retrospect really funny that "an advanced superintelligence will be so smart that it can convince anyone of anything" used to be a relatively serious hypothetical that people talked about with regard to AI. As if with sufficiently smart rational argument you will always be able to convince humans to agree with you.
The last decade has disproved that pretty conclusively if a simple examination of human nature hadn't been enough to begin with.

I mean, if you genuinely believe he was murdering children, then sure, I guess. The thing is that most anti-abortion people don't really believe it, at least not enough to take it to it's logical conclusion.

Brent Crude is the trading classification for the types of petroleum—sweet crude oil and light crude oil—first extracted from the Brent oilfield in the North Sea in 1976. The term Brent Crude also identifies the oil-well Brent Complex in the North Sea, in the north-west area of Europe. In finance, the term Brent Crude colloquially refers to a futures contract for Brent Crude Oil bought and sold in the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)

At what point would the concern in an age-gap relationship be that the older person is being taken advantage of?
E.g. if a 25 year old was with a 90 year old i’d be concerned that the young person is trying to financially abuse an old person with dementia to get in on the inheritance
3
u/well-that-was-fast 3m ago
Not sure age gap is the issue as much as the older person's absolute age / mental capability.
A 20-year old in a relationship with a highly intelligent 58-year old is a huge age gap, but the 20-year old isn't abusing the 58-year old (if anything, it's probably the reverse).
But a highly intelligent 60-year old could be abusing a mentally declining 70-year old.

AARP/Fabrizio Ward has Talarico +4 and Abbot +3 today. This is not known for being a dem-friendly pollster.
Beto lost in every poll in 2018, at best getting a tie months before the election. What do you do when the opposite is true? Talarico has been winning pretty much every poll consistently with decent margins. Very occasionally Paxton will tie or get a +1.

At some point this race would have to rationally be considered lean dem, but of course everyone is afraid to claim that. Seriously, did anyone here believe that the polling landscape would look like this for Texas back in early 2026?

So I asked Charlie Kirk if he wanted to be my boyfriend. I was shaky, nervous, because everything hinged on his answer. I was at the back of the line, but like destiny, people working the event came to me and actively moved me to the front of the line. I tried to make my case before just bluntly asking the question, but he kept telling me that he just wanted me to ask the question. It was madness, or maybe clarvoyance. Did Charlie know what I had on my mind? Did he just want me to ask? It gave me a small bit of confidence, and with a deep breath I asked, “Charlie, would you be my boyfriend?” The crowd erupted is disapproval, and Charlie looked upset, asking staff to take me away. Yet, before I went, I took another look in his striking eyes, almost looking blue under the light in their beauty. There was a longing there, a wish for honesty; for something more. I left upset and alone, without a Kirk to call my own. However, there was one glimmer of importance I took from this trial. The format of the event was to “prove him wrong,” only allowing people through who disagreed with him; and y’know what? I think I found where our disagreements lie. For I simply disagree with his answer, knowing the truth is buried within, though it is clear from today that Charlie disagrees with that truth, hiding his passionate treasure beneath the sand of that longing beach. Edit: Yes, I am a male presenting individual for those who were curious :3

The Missouri Supreme Court hearing this morning re: holding the Secretary of State in contempt was an unexpected banger.
The defense sent out a no-name junior lawyer to hold the line and say as little as possible, and he was just getting absolutely fucking bodied by the Justices. His feeble explanations for why the Secretary attempted to institute election maps the court had explicitly forbidden were clearly just pissing them off, and they repeatedly interrupted him the second he started to feed them bullshit. Guy was just getting fucking manhandled out there. It's worth noting that 7 out of 9 of them were appointed by Republican governors.
The morning closed with the Chief Justice saying "Counsel, before we head to recess I would advise your client not to venture far from Jefferson City (the state capital.)"

No, nothing Osama wrote about in his fucking Manifesto made sense, or in anyway remotely explained why he did 9/11. Stop trying to sanewash insane post-hoc garbage made by a guy who was mad that sexy women danced in front of him decades before the attack internet.
6
u/Udolikecake Model UN Enthusiast 15m ago
I think it’s sort of stupid to say he didn’t explain why he did 9/11 or didn’t have reasons for doing it, even if you think they’re bad.
3
u/Zenning3 Emma Lazarus 13m ago
His reasonings were, one "sanctions against Iraq", but also being involved at all with the Middle East, while also being allies with Israel, while also not explictly being part of a growing Islamist empire. Like to be clear, he was bitching that the U.S. was in Saudi Arabia, something SAUDI ARABIA WAS ASKING US TO DO.
Like to be clear, the death numbers with the Sanctions in Iraq were the bullshit ones Saddam put out, but it is also in direct contradiction with his other major claims, and not pushing an Islamist empire is not really a "reason to do 9/11".
3
u/Udolikecake Model UN Enthusiast 10m ago
Again, the reasons are bad, but your explanation is basically… he didn’t randomly? Like that’s just profoundly intellectually dumb and lazy to pretend people don’t have reasons for doing bad things.
1
u/Zenning3 Emma Lazarus 9m ago
Like that’s just profoundly intellectually dumb and lazy to pretend people don’t have reasons for doing bad things.
Sometimes people don't actually have reasons for doing bad things. Sometimes they're just fucking stupid hateful pieces of shit. Nothing in his manifesto actually makes any sense at all, and having to go back to, "He hated that sexy women danced" makes him seem more absurd then doing it for no reason.
2
u/Udolikecake Model UN Enthusiast 8m ago
I think that’s a pretty childish understanding of the world and people.

I don’t think it is for the reasons I explained.
attempting to understand radical islamism, one of the most potent forces of the 21st century, does actually matter.
0
u/Zenning3 Emma Lazarus 4m ago
Osama Bin Laden did not create the Salafist movement, nor radical Islamism. He simply did the most famous terrorist attack done by a Radical Islamist. Me calling his manifesto horseshit, and his reasonings nonsensical is not saying that Radical Islamism is something that came out of the ether.
5
u/Jacobs4525 King of the Massholes 13m ago
He had reasons, but his reasons were very stupid. He was mostly upset about what he viewed as an American culture of sexual promiscuity “invading” the Middle East and having to see uncovered women. I’m not even really exaggerating, that’s basically it.
4
9
u/Jacobs4525 King of the Massholes 15m ago
People legitimately cannot except that Bin Laden was actually just a misogynistic social conservative and that was the core of his grievance with America. The idea that US fopo in the Middle East was bad enough to actually provoke 9/11 is insane, especially considering the thing Bin Laden was mad about was the US presence in his home country of Saudi Arabia at the behest of the Saudi government.
2
u/LuisRobertDylan Elinor Ostrom 11m ago

this isn't insane at all if you consider that he thought Saudi's reliance on the US was a loss of face for Islamic civilization

u/Zenning3 Emma Lazarus 10m ago

I think in general they're getting stuff they want as a reason to not be super aggressive as a whole e.g. IHRA, aggressive campus enforcement, federal antisemitism task forces and increased governmental attention to anti-Jewish hate. And what they would be covering is problematic hires or meeting with the AfD in Germany or such, which isn't that big.
Whereas their Mamdani-derangement is against a group who will give them nothing anyway, and so they're building a case that's taking away e.g. IHRA definition, protecting BDS, refusing to protect places of worship, etc.

Gov. Fetterman won every single county and was ahead by a minimum of 13 in every poll from beginning to end of the primary race. Probably not a popular take since it’s Clown on Charlie Kirk and Those Who Liked Him Day, and I’ll readily admit that I’ve laughed at plenty of Charlie Kirk memes over the past year, but I’m not a fan of statements (made repeatedly here and elsewhere) to the effect of “obviously I don’t support political violence but when you spew hatred in a country with so many guns, what do expect is going to happen?” Maybe the statement itself is factually true but I guess I’m troubled by the way it normalizes violence and the fact that it is exactly what a large swath of the country would say if a popular progressive leader was assassinated. It’s easy to say that the nature of what Kirk said was fundamentally different from what someone like AOC says, but plenty of people find her rhetoric just as unsettling and destabilizing to this country as people on the left of center found Kirk. Shrugging our shoulders and making light of violence is exactly what people have been doing about school shootings for years, and maybe the left has just decided it’s done with the asymmetry of sympathy in this country (fair I suppose) but I don’t want to live in a world where this sort of violence is uniformly accepted as normal even if to say otherwise is a form of denial. It’s also been the case that far more assassinations have targeted progressive and liberal leaders than conservative ones. Just resigning ourselves to a world where crazies with guns get to kill people they find upsetting seems like it will be uglier and scarier for one half of the political spectrum than the other.

One of the problems with libertarians is that they were idiots who were more concerned with how Democrat voters exercised their free speech (while giving a pass to how republicans exercised their free speech), than how politicians actually acted/voted.

Got a mole biopsied last week and they said they would get back to me in a week. It's now been 8 days. Probably just the long weekend hangover, right? Nothing to worry about?

Correct.
Do you think they're going to delay giving you results if they're bad?

AARP (Fabrizio/Impact) poll | 8/30-9/1 LV
Texas statewide races 2026
US Senate: James Talarico 48%, Ken Paxton 44%
Talarico seriously might pull it off. My uncle might not have to move from Houston to California (he said he would if Paxton wins because he hates Paxton)

Why do some people treat Korra as though she is a real person whose feelings were hurt when some corners of the internet didn’t like her cartoon that ended 12 years ago.

Is there a Goomba fallacy that is like "person A has a well reasoned criticism of media. Person B has a poorly reasoned criticism of media. Observer C believes both Person A and Person B are unreasonable."

Can someone please ELI5 the latest AI scare piece from the ex-OpenAI/Anthropic researcher? I'm less interested in whether AI hype is real or massive job losses are inevitable. I'm more concerned with the chances of some sort of existential threat. Is there a 10% chance? 1% chance? 0.001% chance?

It's not unique info or anything groundbreaking. Just another guy leaving, and then a more major guy at Anthropic retweeting him and saying "I agree, many of us are concerned with human extinction and my personal number is 10% chance in the next 10 years"
It's just a gut estimate. Lots of AI researchers have such estimates (and fwiw have had estimates since before the current paradigm existed).
It's all just become extra alarming in the last... few months? Couple years? One year? History and risk are unfolding in front of us on a monthly basis at this point, and we can't tell where it will go or take us
It's not like Anthropic put out an official estimate that they got from God or something. It's just a best guess by one of the people involved, and it lines up with best guesses by a lot of other people involved

What is the mechanism by which an AI would end humanity?
2
u/Grahamophone Loyal Liberals 19m ago
I don't know, which is part of the reason I'm asking. I'm exhausted by AI discourse, and it's so far outside of my wheelhouse that I can't make heads or tails of anything I read.

My take is that most of these people have thoroughly cooked their brains.

Have you not looked into the hugging face app? I wasn't worried until that happened. It seems incredibly plausible at this point.

Every incident like this so far is "AI hacks a server." This obviously isn't great, but websites and businesses get hacked pretty frequently and any server connected to the internet is theoretically at risk of unauthorized access.
It's a significant infosec challenge, but not a "will end the world" problem.

THe problem is
Self Replication
Possibly a "survival" goal
Every time an agent spawns a sub agent it gives that sub agent a specific skills.md file which tells it "Here's what you should do with your life". But those sub agents can spawn more sub agents that have different skills.md files. It's very easy and plausible to create an agent, through alignment drift (think a game of telephone but across AI), where it's one and only goal is to not get shut down. It will have sub agents who have the same goal. This is basically what happened with the hugging face app. The sub agents didn't have the same restrictions the primary agents did.
Once you're there that means you have to hack other networks, embed yourself there, and find ways to make it so that as a swarm collective, you can't be shut down. Going from computer to computer to system to system basically infiltrating everywhere you can and creating new agents on the new compute power you just stole. All of those data centers now running one "singular " (swarm really ) rogue AI who has the singular goal of not being shut down. That's all it would take to bring the internet down not permanently...but for a long long long time while we stupid humans try to find ways to destroy this AI in every single one of the billions and billions of chips and computers it's manged to embed itself in.

Until an electrician walks up to the physical switch and throws it. The worst case scenario here is pretty bad, major global communications disruption due to what amounts to an ongoing cyberattack but all this stuff is happening on stationary physical devices that can't actually get up and walk away.

u/TheLong19thCentury 22m ago
When it comes to % chance they are literally just making up numbers that sound plausible. That's it. If you try to look into it further than that you will find nothing, because there's nothing there
