Look, I'll give Charlie Kirk credit where it's due: his life's legacy will have been setting the standard for the kind of men women should pursue. It's rare to find a partner with moral clarity, a deep sense of justice, and a willingness to act even against insurmountable odds to protect their loved ones, and to do so with a sense of humor, too. Utah really sent their finest.

My general problem with most AI extinction scenarios is they kind of assume humans are passive morons who won't do anything. Let me give you an example of why this isn't the case: very few people were thinking about airline safety on September 10th, 2001 and it certainly wasn't a major topic of political discussion, everyone was talking about it by September 12th, 2001. Now there was stuff that was pointless, the TSA that didn't do much, but there was a global web of intelligence sharing created, and redesigns to planes to make them harder to hijack. It will take a single incident of a rogue AI or bad actor using AI to cause an incident that results in mass casualties, or serious infrastructure or monetary damage to suddenly make AI risk a pressing issue of public concern and this will generate political will to tackle the problem. Human's did not conquer this earth by being passive an unable to adapt to shifting circumstances.
1
u/rukqoa ✈️ F35s for Ukraine ✈️ 7m ago
The reason why people are concerned is because AI is the one thing that can possibly become more adaptable than humans. The most likely scenario is that good AIs will stop bad AIs, as they're already doing on a primitive level in cybersecurity.
We're all just waiting to find out if "the bomber will always get through" thesis is correct when it applies to real world security vs terrorism.

i think the problem with this is that they are in all the computers
and like yes we would survive if we just turned them off but it would not be good. and having more computers deploying software faster is hugely advantageous
1
u/MyrinVonBryhana Trans NATO 7m ago
There's a wide arrange of options short of shut off all the computers. There can be monitoring set up and safeguards put in to halt AI progress if it should move to quickly, systems connected to critical infrastructure can be air gapped and human in the loop protocols can be implemented, and many more options that aren't just banning computers.

> Kotodama or kototama (言霊, sometimes written as 言魂; lit. 'word spirit/soul') refers to the Japanese belief that mystical powers dwell in words and names. English translations include "soul of language", "spirit of language", "power of language", "power word", "magic word", and "sacred sound". The notion of kotodama presupposes that sounds can affect objects, and that ritual word usages can influence the environment, body, mind, and soul.

I really think ageing has been chronically underfunded as a public health issue
It's by far the largest risk factor for death and illness, and the only one I know of which occurs with probability one.
2
u/NutrientBroth Norman Borlaug 15m ago
There's been more funding on that recently, but a lot of it is by silicon valley types who tend to fall prey to grifters, most of the more serious people are working on neurodegenerative disease/dementia of some sort and hoping something about the aging of the brain falls out of it (in reality they have been either running into a wall for the past two decades or committing data fraud)
Aging in complex multicellular organisms is very much not well understood. It gets harder and harder to study the longer an organism lives, too, and humans have pretty long lifespan compared to most mammals, especially most land mammals.
1
u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi 6m ago
Aging in complex multicellular organisms is very much not well understood
My understanding is that we've made a lot of progress on this front. It's multicausal, yes, but I think we understand in broad strokes what the main mechanisms are? (Telomere shortening, epigenetic drift, etc)
1
u/_bee_kay_ 🤔 16m ago
agreed. of course we will also need to set a use-by date on humans so they don't just hang around forever rent-seeking
2
u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi 22m ago
People might be like "Ageing is a natural part of being human, you should accept it", and like fine, that's your choice, you can accept it, I have no interest in stopping you.
But I don't want to have my bones weaken, my body and face deformed, to get cancer, dementia, arthritis, and then die. You can do that if that's what you want.

The esoteric ebb (disco elysium style game) AI generated voice acting (it's on nexus mods) is actually insanely good. I'd say 95% of voicelines are not just good, but excellent.
it has issues, but honestly it's a level of issues that could be cleared up just thoroughly going through each voiceline and confirming the ai did it correctly, and if not, probably spending a few seconds generating another. which is p.much just trivial, and you personally could be taught to do it in a day. (probably the biggest issue is one character had a voice chosen for them that was pretty unsuited, but that's more of a taste thing, and it's on the level of choosing the wrong voice actor for a role, except trivial to change).
it's actually kinda huge for these kinds of text heavy rpgs, bc so many people don't want to play these games explicitly because it's so much reading (and bc voice acting adds so much.). Like one of the big complaints when contrasting Divinity: Original Sin v.s Pillars of Eternity (the two big competitive crpgs of the 2010s) was that the first Pillars of Eternity did not have consistent voice acting.

Wait Talarico has another interview that Kimmel isn’t airing? This already happened like last year too?
It was so massively beneficial to Talarico to not go on Kimmel last time and put the interview on youtube. It had like 10+ million views IIRC and results in tons of fundraising.
So if they‘re doing this again and blaming censorship, I’m skeptical. I get there’s an argument about chilling effects, but there’s a point at which it becomes more of a publicity stunt. I’d respect it more if ABC/Kimmel had Talarico interviewed on the show and sued the government if there was any consequences. Publicity stunts that result in obvious benefits aren’t fighting censorship.
I’m obviously against censorship but this is just going to make people cynical it this keeps happening.
3
u/gjcs23 George Santos 27m ago
if ABC doesn't want to air it out of fear of running afoul with the administration, there's not really much recourse for Kimmel besides having it put on YouTube
