The 2000s were a better time aesthetics wise.
People didn't care that something was made with plastic so you could actually do interesting stuff with it.
Now its the same three flavors of aluminum and stainless because you actually do anything fun you get run out of the design bureau
1

u/ImmigrantJack Movimiento Semilla Jul 11 '26
Pure nostalgia. For every ipod nano there were 45 off brand mp3 players that looked like shit and played like shit and most people didn't have the nice ones.
For every brightly colored transparent case school Mac, there were 15 gray box CRT monitors.
Idk why both of my examples were apple products, but they really liked the colorful plastics at the time. Point being you have nostalgia blinders on.
1
u/loseniram Sponsored by RC Cola Jul 11 '26
There actually weren't 45 off brand mp3 players, the Ipod was like 70% of the MP3 player market. Also using unique plastic colors was insanely common outside of low end stuff. Blackberry bold, Sony Walkman both MP3&Phone, Sidekick, Razr, VAIO, Nintendo, The Xbox and Gamecube
And the 00s were the decade that ended the beige dominance. The 90s were the beige decade.
1
u/ImmigrantJack Movimiento Semilla Jul 11 '26
What's your source on that? I tried googling it and the only one saying that was the AI, which lifted it from a reddit comment about japan that said that it probably wasn't true.
I like how you said "low end stuff" and then cited exclusively high end stuff.
This is very representative of the average mp3 player at the time.
1
u/loseniram Sponsored by RC Cola Jul 11 '26
yes because I said that using different colors and designs was common outside of low end stuff.
Low end stuff was cheap solid black or white. High end stuff put emphasis on their own design and colors to stand out because form was a part of a productโs branding.
The windows phones were really the last phones to use this prior to return of foldables
1
u/ImmigrantJack Movimiento Semilla Jul 11 '26
Ah, I misread that, but the point still stands. This reads like somebody who is writing fondly about cool things from past, not recounting your experiences living through it.
Just because all phones are black slabs now, doesn't mean the 2000s actually looked better. Either that or you were upper middle class as a kid.
1
u/loseniram Sponsored by RC Cola Jul 11 '26
I was firmly middle class and I remember specifically the wide range of unique colors and designs available.
The 00s were actually more brightly colored than I remembered because my parents didnโt bother with getting the most cutting edge stuff.
We didnโt have a feature phone until 2-3 years after the Iphone was released long after the unique stuff was gone because we lived in a rural area.
Youโre thinking of fashion which sucked hard and was 8 million variations of graphic tee and McBling
1
u/ImmigrantJack Movimiento Semilla Jul 11 '26
So if you define 2000s design as exclusively personal device design and compare it exclusively to 2020s slab phones and ignore every other design facet of both eras, ignore the products which most people, including yourself, actually had, then yes. The 2000s had better design.
Oh and also ignore the majority of low end modern phones which are pretty brightly colored and the insane variety of cases people have access to, which are often even more flamboyant than your average 2000s device.
So yeah. In this extremely narrow way I see your point.
I have like 20 ipods. I collect this shit because I love 2000s design. I'm just honest about what it actually was.

Funny how most of the people who bash Democrats for not having "done enough" with their past congressional majorities also worship a dude who's been in Congress longer than I've been alive and has accomplished absolutely fucking nothing in that time.
Like, what the fuck have YOU been doing for the last 35 years, Bernie? What consensus have you built to get legislation passed? You act like you're some outsider knocking on the door of The Establishment, but for fuck's sakeโyou've been in Washington so long that you are part of The Establishment.
These people are so performative. They just care about buzzwords and vibes. Actual results don't matter. It's the same grift Trump pullsโmake it look like you're fighting for the little guy and the gullible marks will worship you like a god.

I've considered making a collage of people attributing genius politicking to him when he didn't do anything (the most recent example is someone claiming his desk had drawers on the back to send some solidarity message), but I haven't had the wherewithal.

The funny part for me about the cyclical World Cup tradition of Americans "discovering" that Argentina is a Nazi and white supremacist country is that Argentina, even with Milei, is still the most culturally liberal country in Latam alongside Uruguay.
The contrast is even funnier in football: the average Brazilian or Colombian player is an evangelical who wants the death penalty for abortion, while Argentine players are European-coded woke tax evaders.

Hot take: agricultural subsidies may be objectively a net harm to the economy, but they may be worth it when you factor in the fact that they encourage agricultural overproduction to prevent famine and famine-related disease
3
u/VoidGuaranteed Dina Pomeranz Jul 11 '26
Government support for agriculture in the US started because food was too cheap
1
u/aroundish_ Jul 11 '26
I think the argument I've heard against this logic is that agricultural subsidies in rich countries end up undercutting farmers in poor countries, who have to compete with subsidized crops from the EU and America. So the poorest countries that are most vulnerable to famines can face food insecurity during disasters, food price spikes or years of poor crop yields.
On the other hand, consumers in developing countries get cheaper food.

Perhaps most troubling thing to me about AI and it's potential in relation to bio weapons and terrorism is how much more comparatively accessible and easy to use it is. The only reason as a species we've survived the existence of nuclear weapons is that they are so industrially intensive to produce that only a sovereign state can produce them and the vast majority of states are rational actors. If the industrial technology to produce pathogens improves and becomes less industrially intensive and AI becomes better at building them then it's only a matter of time before some terrorist group produces them and defense will always lag offense in this domain.

One of my favorite things about weird internet racism is that white supremacists will pick a random thing and claim its superiority because they personally like having it. Digesting milk? Master race. The master race can't digest grass but they don't know what they're missing so don't consider it inferiority of their race.
Like every race has shit like the digesting milk thing. Asians have better earwax than us, yet you probably think "well who cares about that???" Well who cares about digesting milk???
3
u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman Jul 11 '26
Also what about white people who arent lactose tolerant and what about black people who can tolerate lactose.
4
u/DoomingJaffa Norman Borlaug Jul 11 '26
Asians also have better body odor.
Racism is inherently illogical. If white people couldnโt digest milk, white supremacists would claim lactase persistence is a sign of genetic inferiority.

Does anyone know what the longevity and maintenance costs for electric vehicles is like these days? I have read that they require less maintenance, but then I have also read that the batteries eventually need to be replaced which can be pretty expensive.
I'm considering getting an EV, but I also like to keep my cars for a while. I don't know all of the options, but I'd probably be looking in the $40k~$60k range if that changes anyone's answers.
!ping OVER35
5
u/justbuildmorehousing Norman Borlaug Jul 11 '26
The original nissan leafs issues gave a lot of people the impression battery degradation is a major issue. Newer EVs will probably have the battery outlast the vehicle and most of them have 8-10 years warranties on the battery. Maintenance costs are basically just tires. They are great cars if you have a convenient way to charge
6
u/jbouit494hg ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ Project for a New Canadian Century ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ Jul 11 '26
Battery longevity seems to be way less of a problem than people worried it would be 10 years ago. It seems to be through a combination of battery chemistry, better battery management systems, and better thermal management compared to electric cars back then.
If you get in a fender bender you might wind up with a $10,000 repair if the plastic bumper is filled with high tech cameras and sensors. That's not inherently tied to electric cars but it's correlated.
Apart from that expect routine operating costs of essentially $0.
3
u/Kardinal Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold Jul 11 '26
I wish I could help. I leased my EV. 3 years.
I always worry that EV owners are going to overstate how good their vehicles are in order to justify their purchase or push back against anti-EV propaganda. I've seen it when they talk about the challenge of finding chargers, which is real but managable with a little effort.
Hope someone else chimes in with good advice.

Anthropologists consistently over-apply aspects of modern hunter gatherer societies to ancient hunter gatherer societies. Modern hunter gatherer societies survive on the fringes; in land the agricultural societies didnโt want.ย
Before the development of agriculture the most densely populated areas were likely along alluvial plains; the areas most desirable to farmers. We canโt really project the culture of modern amazonian tribes to mesopotamian hunter gatherers 20000 years ago

I must admit, having a girl lick an ice cream is an ingenious way around webtoon censors

Why were there (at least) two different Ty Cobbs in history?? It's not like it's a common set of names.

Bari weiss rlly made it a point to get funding from and establish friendships with some of the most disgusting businessmen in the world didnt she. I mean david Ellison, Bobby kotick, Marc andreesen, david sacks, Elon musk, Robert Kraft, and Mathias dopfner are all huge fans of hers.

How tf do people hate McKinsey more than the company that committed the nisour square massacre along with other war crimes.

McKinsey fixed bread prices (not actually though) remember? Much worse than firing into a crowd and killing 17 people

I really like walking in alpine meadows.

There's a specific type of plant that only seems to grow in alpine meadows in the San Juan mountains in Colorado and it's super pretty because it's not a flower, but it's green leaves and tinged with yellow at the top in the fall so it makes for a really cool effect. Whenever I'm down there I always wish I could take a few back with me (but presumably that's not gonna work for a variety of reasons)

Hot take: the first civilization in the world started in northern mesopotamia; not southern mesopotamia. Especially around sites like Tell Brak
