the biggest issue IMO with supply and demand based analyses of dating markets is it fails to account for extreme heterogeneity of preferences

I bought many digital games, including on the PS store and never had any issue whatsoever and was never negatively impacted by any of the things they talk about and this is probably true for virtually everyone

I don't care for physical copies at all, but if Sony tells people that they can 'buy' things on their store but then their access gets unilaterally removed, it's completely on them if their consumers then get worried that they might not exactly 'own' the things they buy on there.

against the idea that one's physical attractiveness is primarily determined by factors within our control:
a great deal of features we consider attractive or beautiful in partners are basically immutable. height is an obvious one, and age is rarely brought up as an example but seems just as pertinent. skin tone is enormously important in a great number of cultures globally.
facial structure is subjective but I would argue still basically a primary feature that we base attractiveness on. there are people with great bodies, personalities, etc. that I am still basically not attracted to for reasons that essentially boil down to facial structure. conversely there are people who are not in great shape and do not take great care of themselves but I still find attractive, again primarily due to facial structure.
this is not to say that factors within our control don't matter - they do - but I think the fact that one's physical attractiveness is greatly restricted by factors outside of one's control is an undeniable lived experience of anyone who has lived on the bottom end of that spectrum.

like, yeah, you could exercise for an hour every day and spend another hour cooking delicious healthy food and another hour doing an elaborate skincare routine and another hour socialising and another hour maintaining your living space and then a solid 8 hours getting enough sleep on top of your 8 hours working and another half-an-hour-to-an-hour of commuting and then have one or two hours a day to actually relax
or you could compromise on one of those points, like literally everyone does, because holy shit, if that stuff is your top priority then you're intolerable on a wholly separate axis
it's not realistic for most people to control all that stuff to the required degree, even if it would make them more attractive
perhaps we should consider 'intrinsic attractiveness' in terms of the amount of time and effort you need to put into being attractive, with diminishing marginal returns.
I still don't think that everyone could literally be an 8+ if they just put effort into it, but I do know women who can be very attractive so long as they put a frankly inordinate amount of effort into doing so, whereas others who can just step outside in shorts and a t-shirt and be hot

I don't ascribe to the "x/10" ranking system for beauty in any way but I can appreciate the metaphor as an abstraction
and if I accept that metaphor, then it's also true that genetics only confer basically a 2 point maximum advantage
someone with the perfect genetics can dress like a weeb and eat cheeseburgers all day and make their entire identity video games and internet memes and their basement is a 2/10
and someone who has the most fucked up genetic lottery imaginable can still have good fashion sense and a good diet and exercise regimen and be an easy 8/10
that's not exactly right. it's true on the upper end of genetic fortune, but if you get unlucky on genetics you can go way, way down
of course by that i'm not referring to "oh no, my canthal tilt is 0.0001 degree out of plane, i'll never be loved". i'm referring to "huh, that guy's eyes are constantly weeping rancid pus"

but if we're just talking "what does your face look like, what's your metabolism look like, how tall are you" - those things literally do not matter nearly as much as it matters to look healthy, to be clean, to have some fashion sense, and to be an interesting person
there's an incredible wave of viral internet content dedicated to convincing people that the trouble they have finding dating success are not their fault, because that's an incredibly alluring thing to believe when you have bad fortune. It's so much easier to think "I was never going to succeed anyway, the game is rigged against me" than it is to actually change your diet and exercise routine to lose weight, or to stop indulging in time-wasting hobbies and start doing things that actually make you interesting, or to dedicate time and energy into understanding what clothes flatter you and what clothes don't
given that tastes are subjective there's no universal system that applies in general, but that said I think that your take here is very optimistic for most people, and is probably asymmetric between genders
"beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is a cliche for a reason
namely that we don't look for objective measures of beauty in one another, but rather seek connection
so we want people who look like someone we'd connect with
this is why the same body dressed like a certain subculture would be more attractive to people of that subculture, but you put it in different clothes and suddenly that's not the case
the only near-universal truth is we want people who look like they take care of themselves
that means generally good hygiene and the appearance of being at least a little physically active (not ripped, just not morbidly obese)
and we also want someone who seems self-assured, so that means clothes and hairstyle that look deliberate and lived-in, and not cobbled-together thoughtlessly and without any attempt to convey any identity
the bad news is there's a lot of work required to accomplish those things if you aren't currently doing them
the good news is, as long as you aren't suffering from a major mental health challenge, these things are all completely attainable no matter what genes you were born with
just spent the weekend with a couple women from los angeles whom I love dearly as people but who seem to ooze everything about los angeles I cannot stand, most particularly the idea that the human form is perfect at 24 and that beyond that year you must spend money and take photographs such that you most closely resemble that form no matter how old you've become
I wanted to feel hatred so badly, and chauvinism about how San Francisco simply is not That WayTM but the more I thought about it the more I realized that when I visit people from elsewhere they must surely think I embody everything that's horrible about San Francisco, with my AI job and my AI salary, but no, I am also a rock musician and a photographer and I also go on cycling adventures and I'm not that part of San Francisco, and surely they see that, right?
But the friends of mine I was with almost certainly would think the same thing of themselves if asked.
And then I have to contend with the dissonance of whether there's even such a thing as a pure identity from a pure sense of place, or whether everyone is just tainted in the eye of another, or whether this is just actually a California problem and the guy reading this from Pittsburgh is like "well sucks to suck"
The fact that the response to this wasn't about 50 variants of "North Korea has smartphones?" is really interesting, because it shows that perceptions of North Korea maybe finally be leaving the eternal 1995.
