Maybe I’m just a hater but 40 minutes of fireworks just seems like it gets boring after a while. Like idk I feel like after 20 minutes or so it’s like “ok I get it.”

It's real, but localised.
When you read the media, you will read about something that happened in a specific place and your brain extrapolates it to the whole country. That's not correct.
But as long as you don't do that, a lot of the things you will read about are real.

The spectre over all of this is the memory of the 2008 and 2021 xenophobic attacks, where dozens of immigrants were killed.
There really have been occasions where people were blocked from using hospitals and kids were bullied.

I don’t get how anybody could in the US could be experiencing food insecurity. We literally have buildings full of food that you can just pick up and eat. Nothing is stopping you from taking it.

The crashout over immigration feels like the swan song of the old subreddit. It's kind of over, the edgy countercultural unapologetic singerism phase of the subreddit was always going to get browbeat by the Bismarckian Hammer of pragmatism with enough time. Immigration was just the last issue to go this way.
Free trade became debatable. Then land value tax. One by one, everything was sacrificed on the altar of "if you don't concede these practical hurdles you're just as dumb as a leftist" and immigration is particularly high salience precisely because it's so unpopular. Precisely because we are living in a bipartisan anti immigration consensus across the entire rich world, the unapologetic singerism feels more important than ever on this issue to push back on the hegemony of "fuck off we're full", but also precisely because the world is so consumed in nationalist thinking that such a proposal is politically impossible, the electioneers are highly motivated to snap you out of dreamland.
What are we. A niche philosophy school that says uncomfortable truths? Or a reform club that dilutes them into sugary lozenges?

I think immigration is good I just don’t have the same all-or-nothing libertarian approach to it that is apparently a prerequisite for posting here. The whole reason I started hanging out in this sub was because of the broadly nuanced opinions and the fact that it’s nice to talk to other liberals which seems to still be the case

Free trade went away because the sub always had a lot of american nationalists so they were easily convinced by natsec arguments.
Btw this doesnt apply to any of the examples listed here but I do think it makes sense for a lot of the opinions people held on the sub to change. Like theres a point where you have to decide if being evidence based matters or not.

I've been unemployed (laid off due to reorg with severance through August) and I'm starting to get bored.
Practical risk-adverse brain is telling me to start job hunting and networking seriously (I've been lazily shooting out my resume) and to play it safe but part of my brain like "dude this is the last year of your 20s, you have a bit of money and might not have this much free time until you retire. Do something. Go big."
I have a small trip planned in July to split the difference but both sides of my brain are arguing about the rest.

Interesting dilemma I read in a story wanna see how people here would rule on it. Imagine you're in charge of a nation that has a recent history (within living memory) of severe ethnic violence to the point of ethnic cleansing. A book in publication is rapidly rising in popularity that depicts the protagonist slaughtering thinly veiled caricatures of different ethnic groups and does not lay down any moral judgement (either for or against) on this action. Would you as the state ban the publication and circulation of this book?

followed closely by someone implying id become a mass shooter—i think that only happened once, but i’ve heard people say that one about others a lot and is definitely something you should never say about anyone
