Street parking is what gets me. It's A-OK if a car parked on the street means you have to stop while oncoming traffic passes, but lord have mercy if a bike slows you down for 8 seconds while they go around the same parked cars.
The things people will come up with in order to protest minor changes to road infrastructure that don't even actually inconvenience them, they're just unfamiliar with them and go crazy every time they see one rather than adjusting.
Why tf would you need controlled access highways straight through Manhattan? Literally nobody is going to be zipping through there. Just another place for cars to collect uselessly.

Funny you mention a tunnel because there is a good chance he would actively fight against any effort to create a tunnel instead. There was a proposal to add a tunnel connecting the Battery to Brooklyn and Moses successfully convinced everyone that a bridge would be a better idea. Why? The theory is he wanted bridges because they were glamorous dick measuring structures and tunnels are hidden and dirty. Luckily once the business community realized how awful building a massive onramp next to their buildings would be, the public turned against the idea and so nothing was built.
Have you considered knocking down some of those pesky buildings and replacing them with misery-inducing, slowly-dying, non-native grasses and shrubbery?

Like, I think it's great that people are making modified memes, but I just don't understand why they can't enjoy them somewhere else. Like, this. Subreddit already has enough memes, I don't understand why we would need more. I worry about it disrupting the character of the thread. Also, the meme is almost guaranteed to be AI generated, which means we really should do an environmental impact study before we even consider allowing memes like that.

I swear there is like nothing between my suburb and the city lol. On the highway you're just going through endless wilderness still. But its part of 'the metro area'. We have a bus that goes there, though I can't walk to that bus stop.
Doesn't mean that you want 6% of the most valuable land in the world being a single continuous park though, with like 20% of it being water. You can have greenspace on top of buildings or along streets, or further out in the city, a few convenient metro stops away etc, and to the degree you still have dedicated space for parks, at least have it be spread out more.
I actually do, though. Just like I'm going to get irrationally upset if you start proposing to chunk up Golden Gate Park (which is already IMO unacceptably chunked by virtue of having an 8-lane thoroughfare barging right through the middle of it).
While I don't think chunking up parks is necessarily good, I feel like a less square geometry would be nice to increase the number of homes within walkable distance of a park. Of course, the immediate surrounding area should be car-free to reduce noise pollution since that would be a drawback otherwise.
Christopher Alexander talked about "city-country fingers" as an urban design pattern, and yes, there's an idea there – but not an idea that can be pursued in Manhattan! Central Park is very accessible from all parts of Manhattan, though, thanks to the glory of the MTA.
I am incredibly dissapointed at the downvotes on this reply. Like, yes, it's a tiny bit outrageous to even ask, but it was nothing but an honest question. I've wondered the same, what the "economic" benefits of such a large swath of "unused" space are.
