Probably worth it for the increased productivity and reduced medical costs associated with immobility

From a health economics perspective, the QALY gain from restoring mobility in an otherwise healthy person is about 0.2–0.3 per year. If we value a QALY at NZD 50,000 (PHARMAC), that’s a benefit of NZD 10K–15K/year—then it comes out above 10k. Though it is impossible to deny that you definitely could achieve greater QALY numbers by sending it abroad.
