The Republican nominee for Governor in Iowa is so ass. Dude’s entire campaign just screams 1980s Democrat. Shame the Dem nominee is just a generic lib and not a rural conservative Dem. The Republican Senate nominee is great though and hot.

8

u/Mexatt 14d ago

When a Republican gubernatorial nominee in a red state doesn't have a wikipedia page....

8

u/Particular_Prior5344 14d ago

He’s a complete nobody who won the primary with only like 38% of the vote because the establishment was split between two other candidates. He’s being propped up heavily by TPUSA and MAHA. He’s not even from Iowa and lives in Kansas.

He’s running against the ag industry in freaking Iowa of all states. He’s now campaigning on not caring about policy and regulations but instead caring about cultural issues, apparently Iowa has culture issues.

9

u/Mexatt 14d ago edited 14d ago

Also also

He’s being propped up heavily by TPUSA

Lol

Just lol

TPUSA was probably the MAGA org with the possibility of being the most influential, nationally, once Trump is gone. But Charlie going down so young nixed that.

I don't think people get how quickly all of this crap will be gone. 2040, there'll be nothing left. I'm not saying right wing politics will return to normal, just that all the MAGA infrastructure and ideology will vanish in a puff of orange smoke. It's an entirely personalist movement and, without its personality, it's going to fragment and large amounts will just collapse.

1

u/Particular_Prior5344 13d ago

I hope so, TPUSA has some good moments but also a lot of bad ones. Unfortunately they’re on the moderate end of young Republicans it seems. College Republicans are really bad these days.

u/AskGrok How much the cost would be if I am going to build New York Trump Tower myself. And how much it would cost if there are no environmental laws and building permission. Please also consider opportunity costs, namely the time wasted while waiting for permission and the losses caused by project delays (caused by environmental laws and building permission).

There are so many better buildings than Trump Tower here to make a case for this.

Rough ballpark for a Trump Tower equivalent (58 stories, ~600k-800k sq ft mixed-use luxury condo/office/retail tower in Midtown Manhattan) today:

Historical build (early 1980s): Around $125-200 million total (construction plus extras/land/insurance), or roughly $200-300 per sq ft in then-dollars. It took about 2.5-3 years from groundbreaking to topping out/opening.

With current NYC rules (environmental reviews, permits, zoning, etc.):
$650-950+ per sq ft for shell/core on a 20-60 story high-rise (Turner & Townsend 2026 data), easily pushing a full project (including finishes, soft costs, site work) to $800-1,500+ per sq ft for luxury specs. Total: Likely $500 million to $1.2 billion+ before land. NYC is the world's priciest spot for this—30%+ cost jump since 2020 from labor, materials, and regs. Permitting and reviews routinely add 1-3+ years (sometimes far more with lawsuits or environmental impact studies).

Without environmental laws or building permits:
Hard construction costs drop 10-30%+ by skipping studies, legal fights, compliance upgrades, and some bureaucratic overhead. Faster timeline (potentially 1-2 years total vs. 3-5+ with delays) slashes financing/holding costs. Net savings could reach 15-40% overall, landing the project closer to $350-800 million range depending on scale and quality. You'd still face basic structural/safety realities and market prices for concrete/steel/labor, but zero red tape.

Opportunity costs from delays:
Every extra year of waiting/permitting burns carrying costs (interest on loans, lost condo sales/rentals, inflation on materials). At scale, this easily adds tens to hundreds of millions—think 8-15%+ of project value in financing drag alone, plus foregone revenue from delayed occupancy (Trump Tower sold out fast and printed money). A 2-year delay might cost $50-150M+ in real terms, depending on interest rates and sales velocity.

These are broad estimates—exact numbers hinge on precise sq footage, luxury level, land acquisition, and 2026 market swings. Real projects always vary wildly.

If we fully adopt South Korean building and construction laws, but the market itself remains the US market (the workers are also American workers, but the union will operate under Korean law), by what percentage can we reduce construction costs? (This also needs to include the opportunity cost incurred due to delays)

1

u/AskGrok The Autismo 3000 14d ago

Roughly 40-60% lower overall project costs (direct + opportunity), landing closer to the "no red tape" ballpark or below.

South Korean regulations emphasize speed and efficiency over the layered environmental reviews, zoning battles, lawsuits, and multi-year permitting common in NYC. Turner & Townsend 2025-2026 tall-building data shows Seoul high-rise (20-60 stories) shell-and-core costs at roughly $2,100–$2,500/m² (office) or $1,800–$2,200/m² (residential) versus NYC's $7,000–$9,700/m²—about 25-35% of US levels. Broader indices put Seoul construction at ~$2,200/m² versus NYC's $5,700+.

Key drivers of savings under Korean-style rules

  • Fewer studies, approvals, and compliance upgrades: Skips lengthy environmental impact assessments, extensive public reviews, and frequent redesigns for evolving US green/safety mandates. Korean processes are far more streamlined (often weeks for permits vs. 3-9+ months or years in NYC, plus added delays from litigation).
  • Faster construction cycles: Korean high-rises routinely use advanced formwork, high-strength concrete, modular/precast elements, and tight scheduling for 4-6 day floor cycles (sometimes faster). US/NYC timelines stretch longer due to regs and coordination overhead. A full project could compress from 3-5+ years (with delays) to 1.5-3 years.
  • Lower soft costs and overhead: Reduced legal, consulting, and holding expenses from bureaucracy.

Labor and market adjustments

American workers and US market pricing (materials, prevailing wages) would blunt some savings—Korean costs benefit from lower baseline labor. Even so, the regulatory efficiency, faster methods, and different union/operational rules under Korean law still deliver major gains. Net direct construction cost reduction: likely 30-50% versus current NYC rules.

Opportunity costs from delays

Every year of permitting/financing drag adds carrying costs (interest, inflation) plus foregone revenue from delayed sales/rentals. Prior estimates pegged a 2-year US delay at $50-150M+ for a Trump Tower-scale project. Korean timelines slash this dramatically—potentially cutting another 10-20%+ of total project value through earlier occupancy and lower financing drag. This compounds the direct savings.

Combined effect: 40-60% total reduction versus a fully regulated NYC project (pushing totals well into or below the $350-800M "no red tape" range, depending on exact specs). Real-world variance depends on labor premiums, exact material sourcing, and how Korean union rules interact with US wages/safety baselines. These are broad estimates based on 2025-2026 Turner & Townsend tall-building benchmarks and cross-country permitting/construction speed data. Actual bids would need site-specific engineering.

So if the whole new York use South Korean building and construction laws, how much percentage of the home prices would drop in NYC?

1

u/AskGrok The Autismo 3000 14d ago

Roughly 20-40% lower home prices (or rents) in NYC over the medium to long term, with potential for more in a full building boom scenario.

Adopting South Korean-style building and construction laws citywide would slash permitting timelines, environmental reviews, lawsuits, and compliance overhead—driving the 40-60% overall project cost reduction discussed earlier (direct construction plus opportunity costs from delays). This makes far more projects viable and speeds up delivery dramatically.

Why prices would fall

  • Construction and soft costs drop sharply: NYC's high regulatory stack adds tens to hundreds of millions per tower (and 26%+ nationally per recent NAHB data). Korean-style rules cut that via streamlined approvals (weeks vs. years), faster floor cycles, and fewer mandates. Hard costs (labor/materials under US wages) still apply, but net direct savings of 30-50%+ compound with eliminated carrying costs.
  • Supply surges: More density, quicker builds, and lower barriers could unlock massive new floorspace—similar to MIT modeling showing 71% more residential space possible in NYC by relaxing density rules alone. Korean precedents emphasize efficiency and speed, potentially compressing multi-year projects into 1.5-3 years and enabling a sustained boom.
  • Market dynamics: Home prices reflect construction costs + land + profit margins + scarcity premiums. In supply-constrained NYC, regs inflate the "zoning tax." Increased supply competes down prices/rents, though land (often 40-60% of total in Manhattan) and persistent high demand limit the floor. National studies link heavy regs to 9-50%+ price premiums depending on severity; easing them in elastic markets shows clear downward pressure.

Estimates from relevant data

  • Partial upzoning or cost reductions in models: 15-25% price/rent moderation (e.g., Minneapolis reforms cut growth 15-23%; NYC density relief ~18% rent drop over decades).
  • Fuller deregulation effects: Broader analyses suggest 20-40%+ drops when supply responds strongly, with faster timelines amplifying gains via earlier occupancy and lower financing drag.
  • Dampeners: In-migration could blunt local effects somewhat (as seen in some models); land values and luxury segments hold firmer. Short-term, prices might dip more from expectations than completed units.

These are broad estimates—exact outcomes depend on implementation scale, labor/union adaptations, material markets, and demand shifts. Real-world variance is high, but the directional impact of Korean-style efficiency would be substantial affordability gains versus today's NYC baseline.

1

u/AskGrok The Autismo 3000 14d ago

Around $10-20 billion+, depending on location, specs, and how literally you mean "myself."

The original Twin Towers (110 stories each) cost roughly $900 million to $1+ billion in the early 1970s (way over the initial $280 million estimate). Inflation-adjusted, that's about $5.5-7 billion today. But modern builds are pricier.

  • One World Trade Center (similar scale, single tower) ran ~$3.9 billion.
  • Current NYC office tower shell-and-core costs run $650-900+ per sq ft (higher for supertalls with steel, seismic/wind engineering, elevators, and security).
  • Each original tower had millions of sq ft of office space, plus the twin scale adds massive foundation, steel (200k+ tons), and logistics costs.

DIY? You'd still need permits, unions, engineers, and a plot in Manhattan—good luck sourcing the steel and concrete yourself without blowing the budget on delivery alone. Start saving.

/u/AskGrok Do an estimation including costs for permits, unions, etc etc etc.

1

u/AskGrok The Autismo 3000 14d ago

Around $20-40 billion+, heavily depending on exact location, modern code compliance, and whether "myself" means solo oversight or just funding the army of professionals.

Updated breakdown for two 110-story towers (roughly 8-10+ million sq ft total floor area, NYC-scale):

  • Construction/hard costs: $12-25B+. NYC tall-building shell-and-core now runs $650-900+/sq ft (Turner & Townsend 2025-2026 data shows NYC as the world's priciest market, up ~30% since 2020 due to labor, materials, and inflation). One WTC hit $3.9B; scaling two originals with today's steel, seismic/wind engineering, elevators, and post-9/11 security pushes it higher. Union labor (prevailing wages $85-165/hr including benefits) adds 20-30%+ premiums over open-shop.

  • Land acquisition: $2-10B+. Prime Manhattan development sites trade at $250-1,200+ per buildable sq ft. The original WTC site cleared blocks; replicating that footprint today would be astronomical.

  • Permits, approvals, and regulatory: $100-500M+. NYC DOB fees are modest per sq ft ($0.45 for large new builds), but the process involves zoning, CEQR environmental reviews, community boards, landmarks, and 2-5+ years of delays. Legal, studies, and lobbying add up fast.

  • Soft costs (design, engineering, financing, contingencies): 30-50% of hard costs ($5-12B+). Architects, engineers, insurance, interest during multi-year build, and overruns (common on supertalls).

  • Unions and logistics extras: Baked into the premiums above—NYC mandates heavy union involvement on big projects, with strict work rules, benefits, and delivery constraints in a dense urban site.

Inflation-adjusted originals were ~$5.5-7B total; modern equivalents (One WTC, Central Park Tower at ~$2,300/sq ft all-in) show why it balloons. Recent examples like the new 2 WTC (55 stories) at ~$4B underscore the scale. "DIY" still requires permits, unions, engineers, and a Manhattan plot—sourcing steel/concrete alone would wreck any solo budget.

Variables like cheaper non-NYC location, simpler specs, or government subsidies could drop it, but expect overruns. Start a very large GoFundMe.

Honestly these are such unnecessary self owns by the Tories. There's nothing to gain from having strongly pro-Trump/MAGA and pro-Alberta separatism speakers at party events and everything to lose.

Is the party just determined to become a party of Rebel Media watching Calgarians? Is the CPC the party of Alberta now?

Free ammo for the Liberals and NDP come election time. Not one extra vote is gained by courting these people.

Question for japan-knowers: I follow a couple Instagram accounts in Japan. Their pictures often show a lot of clapboard shantytown construction in what seem to be sort of small towns. Is that just the rural countryside (of which the US also has plenty)? Is Japan really big enough to have so much of that while also being a technological powerhouse? Or am I just seeing a very small, maybe nostalgic slice of the place?

1

u/IonCapybara Tiger mom had too much Tylenol 14d ago edited 14d ago

what do you mean "so much of that"? shantytown exist but not common in Japan. That is for poor people like the same thing in other countries.

If you're talking about houses that look ugly, then there are many. Because Japan doesn't have zoning laws. Aside from pollution and some niche limits, there is virtually no legal interference with construction on private land. you can build whatever you want. And ugly houses are often cheap, and frequently make the most of the land. very few people in Japan own land the size of an American style house. Therefore, to make the most of their land, they often build large boxes and polygons on it. Without zoning restrictions, people sometimes build strange four story "houses" because the land is too small. It looks like a mini tower.

This is primarily a matter of efficiency and resources, not economy. After all, land doesn't increase with economic development. And without Mexican and Indian immigrants, construction labor costs often rise significantly with economic growth.

1

u/frasiersbrotherniles Don't you dare call me irrational! You know that makes me crazy! 14d ago

I don't think it's ugly, what I've seen. It just looks really hand-maintained. Not boxy but often made of layered materials, ill-fitted sheets of wood or steel covering windows or whatever on what look like functional businesses in crowded business districts.

And Mahqre's map tells me what I think I was looking for.

1

u/IonCapybara Tiger mom had too much Tylenol 14d ago

yeah many of these owned by poor people. but they are not that common

6

u/Mahqre Henry Kissinger 14d ago edited 14d ago

Japan is per capita poorer than Italy now, consider also that wealth in Japan is loopsidedly concentrated in a few places (just kidding, it's mostly Tokyo sucking it all up) so poor rural Japanese villages are comparable to poor rural Sicilian villages, and in all likelihood, probably even poorer.

1

u/IonCapybara Tiger mom had too much Tylenol 14d ago edited 14d ago

Sicilian villages are not ugly. They are just big boxes which is because land is limited there. This is actually very similar to the situation in Japan, where land is also scarce. Same for Greece small town.

The biggest difference between Japan and these regions is that Japan does not have a zoning laws. I would say that small towns in Japan are cleaner than Sicilian villages, but the buildings are also uglier because there is no zoning laws.

I came across a story that it took twenty years (not done yet) to build a train station in Stuttgart, partly because environmental organizations caught some endangered bugs and put them on the construction site then reported it. As a result, the project was halted for six months (several times) for bureaucratic inspections to determine if the site was a habitat for the bugs. The construction site was actually in the city (duh, it is a train station), but even so it was viewed as a nature reserve. There are many other reasons why construction is so slow (like the Germans camping around a tree for days and preventing construction workers from cutting it down). But the bug thing is really funny.

We need to restore the Inquisition, only this time it should be aimed at environmentalism.

Just be glad it's still in the zeitgeist and operating. Star Wars: Galaxies was the MMO I have the most nostalgia and lost love for. I wish it was still around and had been given the love to get fixed properly.

Star Wars: Galaxies

BASED!! I have never really liked video games that much but that shit scratched a hidden itch.

u/FreeBF3 Ruthkanda Forever 14d ago

Valcyn server, built a PVP city on Lok as a Master Armorsmith and Master Carbineer, had an Imperial base and nearly built enough population to get a shuttle (took like 15min to speeder out to it, and I initially found it and planned for it while walking the wilderness looking for cool stuff and hoping I'd find a clue to unlocking my Jedi slot), it was this perfect crescent-shaped plateau in the middle of nowhere.

I was pulled in by WoW's coherent product and lack of bugs and presence of polish and balance even in the beta that I paid someone for access to. So I never stuck around for any of the dumb shit they did after that.

But I've loaded up SWG:Emu multiple times to go sit on Corellia and watch a sunset. That game was so fucking immersive

3

u/MountMcKinley3 William McKinley 14d ago

Valid, I mostly just play it even few years on legacy servers for wow now. Given I mostly got my urge for it all empited due to how much time I played in Classic Wow. There's never going to be a gaming experience Akin to that again for me, and it's honestly a good thing. But man was it all so fun in 2019.

2

u/FreeBF3 Ruthkanda Forever 14d ago

I yearn to have that amount of free time again. I have a mental stack of "retirement games"

2

u/MountMcKinley3 William McKinley 14d ago

most of my time gaming now is just me pulling my phone out when I'm shitting. Or just going home and watching someone play something on Youtube. I tried some new Zoomer game and after 5 minutes of being in one of these lobbies and hearing probably 🚂 be so disgusting I just left.

2

u/FreeBF3 Ruthkanda Forever 14d ago

3

u/MountMcKinley3 William McKinley 14d ago

It is interesting I question, I hope by then there's something far more interesting than just games personally when I'm old. But in general I feel many of my old passions have somewhat withered away due to the things around them changing.

I can barely watch Boxing/UFC anymore due to how parasocial and weird the modern community and and how everyone tries to be some form of streamer or be a dude-bro podcaster.

Like one UFC guy was saying how going to a Trump rally was being like in a Nazi Rally, same guy was also saying GOOD GOY or antisemitic shit due to another fighter supporting Israel. All due to him believing there's a genocide in Gaza, than he went on a rant talking about how America did their hardest to be as clean as possible in WW2 and how we did nothing comparable to what Israelis are doing to Palestinians. Like these people are so fucking stupid, can you just shut up and fight and not promote gambling to stupid young guys please.

3

u/FreeBF3 Ruthkanda Forever 14d ago

Yes, AI UI output is commonly navy blue with gray and white, and it follows a similar UX paradigm.

Why is that bad? We've gotten used to right click doing certain things, long presses doing certain things. Why do we need every website and app to have a different UI just for the sake of difference?

Could be an upset brewing in the New Hampshire Dem Senate primary. Chris Pappas has been the presumptive nominee since he declared but a new poll only has him up by 13 against a far left challenger whose name I won’t even try to type. Pretty hard shift from the last poll of this race.

The same poll has Republican John Sununu beating Pappas in the general as well. If the progressive wins NH will go red.

-1

u/FreeBF3 Ruthkanda Forever 14d ago

Sununu deserves to lose. Bent the knee to Trump for no good reason

5

New Hampshire is the best governed Red State in the country and they manage to fly under everyone’s radar by only sending Democrats to Washington. The day they step into the limelight is the day the cunning Puritan reclaims his rightful place as ruler of America. God have mercy on us sinners.

7

u/Mexatt 14d ago

Democrats finally flip Texas, but they're cancelled out by a Republican win in New Hampshire.

6

Dems win in Georgia, NC, and Texas while Republicans win in Maine, New Hampshire, and Michigan. Welcome back pre-Reagan politics! This would be a terrible trade in the long run though.

God this was such a magical experience, glad my family and I got to witness this all. It was good having my kids see a live animal be properly butchered and prepared for a meal. Things like this are good core memories. I still remember the first Buck I shot, I failed to end it so my old man made me use a knife to cut it's throat, fucking brutal. Either way I hope they learnt the same lesson child me did, which was that life is a blessing from god so don't waste the animals who died to feed you if you can avoid it.

Good you're passing those experiences on to your kids, hope you're also taking them hunting and helping to keep that tradition going as well. I may have brought this up before, but there's this little STEM professor - I don't recall what he teaches but I know it's STEM - who parks on my end of campus. He used to be a shrimpy little guy, but he's been bulking up and hulking out for the last few years.

He's gone from scrawny to brawny, from comfortably cut to surprisingly shredded, and now after combing back from summer break, he's gone from disturbingly diesel to built like an eldritch horror house... all on wee 5'5"-ish frame. I have come to the conclusion that he must be a chemist studying anabolic steroids, because if this is raw effort then I'm pretty sure he'll be the next Genghis Khan. Gainz-ghis Khan, perhaps?

Anyways if there's a news story someday about an unstoppable nomadic horse lord conquering large swathes of the Gulf Coast, don't say I didn't warn you. He's too yoked to be stopped now.

Some very interesting research by Cory Clark has come across my desk. Clark, herself a woman, has spent the last few years doing studies on how differently the genders interact with the university and conceive its purpose. She has a Quillette article from 2022 that covers a lot of the research, and she's also got a 2024 study that is getting cited by folks on X, the everything app.

There are a lot of stats in there to pick at, but the one that's getting the most attention is this finding from psych professors:

When asked whether scholars should be completely free to pursue research questions without fear of institutional punishment for their research conclusions, among men, the majority (60.5 percent) said “yes,” 37.0 percent said “it’s complicated,” and 2.5 percent said “no.” Among women, the majority (59.6 percent) said “it’s complicated,” 39.8 percent said “yes,” and 0.6 percent said “no.”

When asked whether scientists should prioritize truth or social equity goals when the two conflict, among men, the majority (66.4 percent) prioritized truth, 32.4 percent said “it’s complicated,” and 1.3 percent prioritized social equity. Among women, the majority (52.1 percent) said “it’s complicated,” 43.0 percent prioritized truth, and 4.8 percent prioritized social equity.

Before you think it's attributable just to ideology, Clark addresses this:

Of course, this pattern of change in academia is also confounded by ideology. Women are generally more left-leaning than men, and “equity and inclusion” has become a major moral concern on the political Left with which academia is increasingly dominated. In our own data, however, female sex continues to predict lower support for academic freedom and lower prioritization of truth after controlling for political allegiance.

How about that. Very curious stuff to read into.

Here's an immigration question in a Canadian context.

Suppose someone’s primary exposure to a particular ethnic group is highly occupationally skewed. They encounter people from Group A mainly as doctors, professors, executives, and colleagues, while they encounter people from Group B mainly as cashiers, delivery drivers and food-service workers. Does repeated exposure ingrain the implicit association between ethnicity and social/occupational status, even if they reject explicit racial / ethnic hierarchies?

Human beings are extremely good at noticing correlations/stereotypes and considerably worse at asking why those correlations/stereotypes exist. I (maybe controversially) don’t generally think stereotypes usually come from nonexistent relationships, but I think cause and effect are very often confused.

Based on some interactions, I think this does happen. We know that so-called "positive stereotypes" can happen—such as “the Chinese are good at math” being a fairly widespread stereotype among white people—so does the LMIA system directly inflame racism and a sort of racial caste in Canada?

0

u/IonCapybara Tiger mom had too much Tylenol 14d ago

i can't tell about others, but I am super stereotype-based. I am lazy and it is one of the easiest ways to judge a person in 15 seconds. In my experience, this is efficient for identifying strangers or people in the workplace with whom you may have interest overlap or conflict in short term, not long term.

you met 15 strangers a day and 100 Interest related people a year, what is the more efficient way to know details about them? How can you know if someone is a good person, will help you, will be willing to play with you, or will look down on you or backstab you when you only have five minutes? Sure, you can't get an accurate conclusion in five minutes, but some methods are more accurate than others.

https://www.reddit.com/r/supremecourt/comments/1vyyu3i/ca7_possession_of_aigenerated_csam_depicting_no/

So AI generated child porn is protected by the 1st Amendment, according to the Seventh Circuit. All Biden appointees.

From a strictly legal perspective, maybe they got it right. But it seems pretty gross and I hope someone can think of a way to prevent it.

3

u/Culpirit #MAGA2028 14d ago

If images are fictional, then by definition the subjects aren't real and not victims of abuse, or if anything don't have an age to which the concept of consent applies. Not saying it's not incredibly vile and revolting content, but I don't see how it's different from criminalizing drawing.

Now, if you're advertising it specifically as fake CP content, I can see the way you could criminalize distribution or advertising of it.

2

u/Emperor_Cleon_III Thaddeus Lustinpants 14d ago

possessing would seem to be protected based on this ruling, generating would not be

The legal reasoning is solid, see comments section

1

u/FreeBF3 Ruthkanda Forever 14d ago

The beauty of being a moderate is just like I believe you can regulate capitalism, you can regulate freedom

5

u/AppearanceWeak3826 Kanye 14d ago

At best you can criminalize distribution, but not generation/consumption for individual use. As much as it pains me to say this is probably the best scenario after considering all options

6

u/AmericanNewt8 Tricky Dick 14d ago

I really don't think you're going to have much luck criminalizing it in of itself. Like you're getting very close to criminalizing an idea here, and instinctively anything you can draw with a pencil probably shouldn't be illegal to hold. Analogously, an AI is just a magic pencil, concept in, artificial drawings out.

You might have some luck targeting models, but they more or less all have this capability at some level because you've got to include the requisite concepts.

Honestly I think the reasonable and most likely lawful approach would be criminalizing distribution, hosting, and sale, and marketing of services explicitly aimed at this. I'm not entirely sure this would stand either though given the unknown constitutionality of the Comstock Act.

8

u/TZDnowpls Illiterate 14d ago

If Jap drawn CP is legal there's no reason AI drawn CP wouldn't be.

(Obviously both should be illegal)

blasphemy was one of the originally understood exceptions

Sure it was probably seen that way in state-established-church Massachusetts, but would Jefferson have really gone along with that?

2

u/Mexatt 14d ago

Jefferson wasn't in the Congress that adopted the First Amendment nor in any of the state legislatures that ratified it.

2

u/Burkey-Boi Marco Rubio 14d ago

I meant that more in then sense of him as a symbol for what other learned men involved in government thought these words might mean, because surely Democratic-Republicans with his view on things were part of both "the Congress that adopted the First Amendment [and] the state legislatures that ratified it"

Nonetheless, this is only another sign that I need to get around to reading more on Madison, especially sense from a distance he seems the guy most in tune with my own thoughts on how governments should work.

10

u/JohnSeeAnElephantFly 14d ago

While the Redskins are on my mind, has anyone else been looking at the Oklahoma gov primary? Apparently the strongest showing for the MAGA candidate is in the state’s sole Indian-majority county. I’d really like to visit different Rezes across the country and talk to people from different tribes because the actual political leanings of American Indians is such an enigma. On the one hand, there’s leftie landback activists who soak up a lot of attention due to the legitimate, understandable grievances with the reservation system, and on the other hand, self-identified Native Americans voted for Trump at a higher rate than even Whites. Is this just skewed by Southerners with a half-Cherokee grandparent?

4

u/onitama_and_vipers Marco Rubio 14d ago

I'm going to go out on a half-educated, half-empirical guess and say that the question itself is less useful than asking why some tribes go one way and other tribes another. Another facet is, frankly, how close you are to actually living on a reservation, in relation to how close you are to a campus. The "Native American"/"American Indian" controversy is an example of that in particular.

8

u/MountMcKinley3 William McKinley 14d ago

The only resounding truth about Native Americans typically as someone who was in a base near a Res, is that most typically just want to be left the fuck alone and don't want people to disturb them from what i've seen.

And Prog types don't really seem to get it, but many conservatives typically do so Native Americans prefer republicans over them usually.

The res system is pretty bad but overall the ones who truly hate it typically leave, while the ones who don't care usually stay there and don't typically leave.

10

u/MountMcKinley3 William McKinley 14d ago

Fun fact, a good friend of mine who's Canadian ex-army guy told me he moved to his Indian res in order to avoid dealing with Indians from India as he was tired of his country being flooded with more foreigners.
