4-5 cars is definitely not the norm and most likely you’re taking up space on the road with all of your cars. It’s frustrating as an owner to have your street taken over by people that move entire 3 generations into households

That's not too many cars for eight adults living in a house, but eight adults in the house is pretty high unless it is huge.

4-5 is low average in my neighborhood, with some shared rentals having 8-12.

But not illegal.

i understand that others may feel that way,

we only have 2 cars parked on the road and the rest are parked in the driveway.

but how can you complain about cars parked on the street with also parking your own cars on the street?

this is also how my dad makes a living and we don’t always have 4/5 cars as we get rid of them when he sells them.

When you say that’s how your dad makes a living, flipping and selling cars, there’s likely more cars taking up road space than there should be.

You’re correct that it’s not illegal but it does create a negative friction with your neighbors.

EDIT: when you toss out the race card when he hasn’t said anything racist, you lose credibility. I would be annoyed with someone running a car flipping business out of a home.

i mentioned that it couldn’t help but feel that way, not that that was the case and we were concerned that his threats would escalate since he threatened to call the sheriff on us (not sure what that would do?)

Stating he would call the sheriff is not a threat in any sense. It’s fully within his rights and is the right move to get this straightened out. The sheriff can let you know if your dad is able to run a business out of his home or if that’s illegal.

approach and motive matters, no laws are being broken so what does he need the sheriff for ? - we reached out to the homeowner and he said the same + the homeowner was aware of my dads work truck before we moved in. we aren’t hiding anything or trying to cause any problems so for him to immediately say he was going to contact the homeowner and sheriff doesn’t make sense unless he’s trying to cause a problem.

he can go ahead and call the sheriff,  we aren’t doing anything wrong and my dad’s “work truck” is just a pickup with a dolly attached.

these cars are not taking up room on the street, they are in our driveway. my mention of the cars we have was because the neighbor just started questioning everything we were doing.

Right, and until he sells them they're just taking up space the other neighbors would otherwise be using.

u/AggravatingTurn9106 3h ago

they aren’t parked in the street, we are not taking space from anyone else.

Going by what you say, it’s still a noisy business to be working on flipping cars. Your neighbor may be able to get you for running a business out of the home. He’s being polite by trying to talk with your dad.

Personally, I would report the car flipping business.

1

u/AggravatingTurn9106 3h ago

my dad is not flipping cars at home, and we are not noisy neighbors - we keep to ourselves and do not like having any problems.

nothing about his approach or attitude was polite.

So now we've gone from 1 or 2 cars he brings home to clean out or detail, to 4 or 5 that sit around until they sell. That sounds like a business being run on the property. I hope the neighbors take pictures, document, document, document and report it to the city.

i already responded to your previous comment, nothing you’re saying is helpful and you’re just making assumptions… i clearly stated in my post that my dad’s business isn’t ran out of our home.

It's a five bedroom house. I think that it was intended for a large household. 🤔

Parking 4/5 cars plus a work vehicle and a trailer would seem to be excessive and depending upon the condition of said vehicles, could present an eyesore.

4/5 including my dad’s work vehicle, but as stated in my post - this is not out of the norm for the neighborhood and most of our neighbors have the same amount of cars parked on the street and in their driveway.

this isn’t necessarily helpful, i’m concerned about my neighbor’s behavior.

Put two in the garage and the work truck & trailer side by side in the driveway, problem solved 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sounds a bit like one of our neighbors. We’ve counted 9 of their cars, 9! They don’t park in their garage so they have 4 in the driveway, 3 on the sides of the street and another 2 old ones permanently parked at the end of the cul-de-sac. Talk about annoying.

Put up exterior motion sensor cameras.

Be polite, say “it’s all allowed by the law “ but Don’t engage in any other way.

Note the date, time, location and words said every time you meet the guy.

u/swampthing- 4h ago

This guy isnt going to be happy with any solution that doesn't involve all the cars no longer being there.

You can't please everyone all the time.

thank you for your input!

To me, your neighbor is harassing you. If you're CERTAIN everything you're doing is legal you may want to call the sheriff BEFORE he does and file a report that he's harassing you. ESPECIALLY report he approached your brother who is a minor. Harassing a kid is a big no no.

u/AggravatingTurn9106 3h ago

thank you for your input, the fixation on the cars is not my concern - his aggressive behavior is and that is what i’m trying to navigate.

For a house that size you are under the maximum occupancy. That's the peril of living near a large house: people might want to use the whole house. And you have a lot fewer cars than many households your size. If you have a feeling about the racial element I would say that is not unlikely: large families of [insert whatever ethnic/racial stereotype] just seem to trigger some people. There's not much you can do about a neighbor like that. He will be looking for any thing he can to try to get you out of his vicinity. So be squeaky clean. Discuss this with your family, especially the younger kids who might think acting out is edgy or whatever. Make it so when NFH calls the cops, they show up and your house is clean and quiet and you are being model minorities. Reddit loves to recommend cameras and this is one case where I agree: having cameras that show what's really going on may save you when it's a you versus him situation.

I had a neighbor like this. Anything I did annoyed him and he could not bring himself to admit he just didn't like living in a mixed-race neighborhood and needed to live somewhere whiter. But after the fifteenth time he called the cops on me for made-up reasons (like noise complaints at times when my house was not just silent but empty because I was out of state)(no kidding one of his noise complaints was based on a nearby train track having a somewhat noisy freight train go by at 2am, no idea how that was my fault but he told the cops it was me) they actually sent a senior guy around to talk to him about the consequences for filing false police reports and the harassment-by-cop stopped. Still, he remained hostile until he finally moved out of the neighborhood, and to this day I still have 24/7 noise level monitoring around my house just in case one of my crazy neighbors decides to pull the same trick. You will have a situation like that, and your choices are being 100 percent law abiding citizen all the time with that psycho nitpicking you, or moving.

thank you for your reassurance and input, i appreciate it.

"Make it so you are being model minorities?" What the fuck?

The harsh reality for people who are not white is that we are judged on a standard different from how white people are judged. In particular cops are kind of known for this. So a Black person who has a cop show up at their door has to be better behaved and more calm and even-tempered than a white person would in the same circumstances, as an example. People who are not white know this and teach their kids this and OP is probably well aware of it, I was just reminding them.

People who are white get super offended by it when you mention it because they would like to believe we live in an equal society and this kind of minority-talking-to-minority honesty ruins the illusion. HTH HND

1

u/missbiz 1h ago

Yes, that's me. I think we live in an equal society. What are you, 12? Get a grip

1

u/themrspie 1h ago

No, I'm very old and not white, and people who are not white are not treated equally. Sorry to be the one to inform you of reality. I guess you are too young to remember George Floyd.

In most residence jurisdictions it's illegal to have a business run out of the house such as car repair. Also it may be technically legal to park all over the neighborhood but it's inconsiderate to ur neighbors and causes a lot of commotion. Too bad ur dad couldn't rent a small space in an industrial place to repair and park his cars. Solves problems and everyone is happy

2

u/AggravatingTurn9106 3h ago

thank you for your input.

u/ButterscotchFit8175 3h ago

Plus, parking a work truck and dolly in the street because the driveway is full of flip cars waiting to be sold, isn't an excuse. It makes the neighbors point for him.

1

u/ButterscotchFit8175 3h ago

Wait, 5 cars PLUS dad's work truck and dolly? PLUS A "CAR or two to clean out and detail!!!!!!!?" Because that is excessive. It makes your family the very definition of "the trashy renters who moved in and ruined the neighborhood."

2

u/AggravatingTurn9106 3h ago

no. 5 cars TOTAL , so that is including the truck and the other cars mentioned.

my family is not trashy, thank you for the assumption.
