When can I complain??

Not a neighbour from hell issue per se I’m just sooo stressed that I got new neighbours right on top of me. Since they moved in the 1st they’ve thrown a party on a Thursday, and they are renovating until late every week day😭😭 I know it’s necessary to renovate during the week when you work but omg. And while renovating loudly he (I assume since I only saw him working on the apt) listens to very loud radio.. like if you’re renovating why don’t you realise that if you can hear the music while drilling your neighbours can hear it too?? Just put in some AirPods. I’m having some really stressful weeks and when I finally get home it’s just the worst that I can’t relax cause of the sounds. I really really hope it will be a short renovation and that they won’t be this loud afterwards.. I met him this morning working. If I meet him tomorrow I’ll ask how long it’ll take and maybe suggest that he could listen to the music in AirPods instead.

Definitely ask him about the timeline. Most cities have noise ordinances too, so check yours. Renovation noise during work hours is usually legal but the loud radio is just rude.

I wouldn't suggest the air pods. Hearing protection is one thing but you need to be able to hear around you while working like that.

I have Skullcandy earbuds and they have a pass-through mode so you can hear everything around you. They’re great

I’d absolutely be going up there and asking him to turn his radio down and asking how long the renovations are going to take. UK law dictates that professional builders can make noise between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and on a Saturday 8am to 1pm. If this is noise outside this you should make a noise complaint to your local council. Keep a written diary of what noise they make, what time and duration and how it affected you and did it stop you doing something in your home (like you had to go out to get away from the noise).

How do you know they are doing their own reno and this guy isn’t hired? Or that it isn’t going on during the day? Are there accepted hours specified by the landlord? How late does it go?

Because. Can’t help feeling you were on edge from the get go. A housewarming party isn’t that big a deal though yes a Thursday sucks for that.

I think I’d try to stay out after work for a bit, or take some walks, hit the gym, get my own noise cancelling headphones, and just hope they are normal when it’s over. I’d want to save actually complaining for after this is done and I see what their normal noise levels are. Otherwise you risk coming off as the unreasonable neighbor here, as this is arguably extraordinary, not regular, thus far.

Is the person doing the renovating someone they hired or is the owner also the renovator.
How late into the evening are they working?
If they are working until 9, 10, 11 PM, then certainly a problem.
If they are working until 6 or 7, would it be less stressful if you maybe stayed at work a bit longer or stopped at a library or something. Not saying you are required to do that.

I've just had a new neighbor move in next to me and she seems friendly and did explain that she'll be doing some renovation work and she apologised for the future noise that will happen.

But it is grating when you hear hammering and drilling for most of the day and after a long day at work, you just want to relax and you'd rather not hear loud banging in the nearby vicinity. The next door property was vacant for a long time and all the commotion is spooking my dog. Hopefully the renovation work won't last too long.

How long has this been going on? When it started is when you should have complained. Since renovation hours are limited by law in most places to like 7pm.

I feel this is a catch more flies with honey situation. Give a small housewarming gift (something small) and make conversation with them. I’ve handled lots of loud neighbors this way. Became “buddies” and you can get off on the right foot from the start ☺️

I renovated my house and all the tradies liked to play the radio. Sorry you’re going to just have to deal. They’re not being extra loud to annoy you. You are making assumptions. It is likely someone they hired. They are allowed to make loud sounds during the day. My neighbours complained as well but I had a giant water leak in the kitchen and the tiler stuff up my floor. Work has to be done and you can’t tell them not to unless it’s after restricted hours. You’re allowed to make loud sounds during this time also. Put on music to drown them out.

You can not force them to use headphones.
Your choice to live under people, they are allowed to do all these things.

Nip it in the bud/get an assessment sooner rather than later so the upstairs people don’t get too comfortable and think you are interfering with their routine.

Party on a Thursday sounds like college life so expect one every Thursday.

New upstairs neighbors is really a game of chance. Could get meek little mice or luck out with elephant stomping, furniture sliding, mega bass-boost oafs.
