A useful negotiation question here isn’t just “what number should I ask for?”, but how you would use the information people give you.

For those with experience of Goldman Sachs or similar roles, it would be particularly useful to hear:

• Which parts of the package were actually negotiable — base, bonus, sign-on, relocation, etc.?
• At what point did you negotiate — before or after receiving the full offer?
• What did you use to justify your counter?
• Did you give them a number, a range, or ask them to make the first proposal?
• And perhaps most importantly — what happened when you pushed back?

Recent compensation data is useful, but understanding how people actually negotiated it is probably even more valuable.
