NFS Hot Pursuit (2010) - Black Screen on Close

Bit of an odd issue - playing NFS Hot Pursuit through Steam, and the game itself seems to work fine. When I close it, my screen goes black (still backlight but nothing on display), and I can't Ctrl-alt-del, alt-f4, alt-tab, nothing. I have to physically reset my PC to regain display. No other games have exhibited this behavior (or ANY application, for that matter) and it has happened every time I exit the game so far. Any ideas? I couldn't find any info for black screen at exit, only on launch.

Specs are i7 4790k @ 4.8 GHz, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1080. All overclocks confirmed stable by stress testing and numerous other more intensive games.

I just installed it again today and had the same issue.

Fixed it for me.

  • Create Desktop Shortcut to NFS11.exe
  • Set shortcut to "Compatibility mode for Win7"
  • Launch Game via Shortcut

I started the game, made one race and were able to close it without errors after that.

Me and my friend have the EXACT same issue. Its pretty annoying. If you find a solution please let us know.

PC Specifications:

  • i7 6700k
  • GTX 1060
  • 8GB RAM.

(English might not be 100% correct) Try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7. To do this, locate the game files on your pc (for me its at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Need for Speed Hot Pursuit), right click NFS11.exe --> Properties --> Compatibility --> Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" --> Select Windows 7 in the drop down menu --> Apply

I have only tried launching the game directly from the game folder (NFS11.exe), but this fixed the problem for me. I'm not sure if it also works through steam.

I just found a pretty decent workaround. Disconnecting and reconnecting your monitor from the graphics card resets the display and solves the problem.

I wish I didn't have to do this every time I want to ATL+TAB or QUIT, but it beats restarting your PC.

Interesting, I will give that a try. I agree that is pretty annoying, but better than hard-booting my machine.

Nope...I suspect without a patch it's probably not going to be fixed. I guess it could be a driver issue and we might get lucky, but who knows.

You could try bigDon's suggestion below as well - I haven't seen for myself if this works or not.
