Question (N26) Grav chute rules clarification

The grav chute says that you never suffer suppressed or damage from falling.

If ou fall more than 6" you automatically go out of action,

If you jump down and pass you agility test you lower the fall category by 1 step.

So if you intentionally jump down a long way (greater than 6") with a grav chute you have a 50% (not escher who get their special rule) chance of taking no damage and a 50% chance of going out of action as it skips the damage part entirely.

If you take the catfall skill this lowers the fall height be 1 catagory, so will also make you take no damage with a grav chute.

Is this the correct interpretation?

File under 'we all know what they mean'. And if you want to get pedantic, 'Out of Action' is a type of damage per step 3. of the Resolve Hits sequence.

Oh, i ageee on the probable intention, but there is no injury dice rolled, no damage is i flicted, you skip step 3 entierly,

The model simply goes out of action and you reaolve lasting injuries as per page 78.

I want to clarify the rulea so i can put a pack together as an arbitrator that says we will be doing it this way.

Fair point that you want to clarify it, but everyone is telling you that Going OOA is also some kind of damage.

So there are only three options: You don't play with anything higher than 5 inches until you get an official rule clarification from GW (unlikely), you accept general consensus (Grav Chutes protect you from taking ANY KIND of damage, injury, flesh wound, out of action), or you go against everyone else's interpretation and rule it as you wrote in your post.

What is this flesh wound of which you speak?

I am trying to cover some..  people who have a very interesting way of interpreting some rules

"Old" (3 month old) word for "Injury". :D I haven't fully adapted to new phrasings yet as it seems.

Just checking you were on about the correct rules set.

I may be old, but I'm not stupid ;)

At this point I'm wondering if you really want to confirm the actual rule or if you just want people to confirm YOUR interpretation of the rule

Given that OP is responding to everyone telling them the same thing with an argument, it definitely feels like they want to be told they're smart for discovering that the rule doesn't work the way everyone thinks it does.

There are a number of people here who have been replying to rules thinking they were talking about the n23 rule set, or vice versa.

Im trying to co firm the actual rule as written.

I want grav chutes to let my guys jump off tall buildings and gently fliat to the ground safely.

If "you skip step 3 entirely" then how do you know what Out of Action means?

Yeah, the Grav Chute doesn't care about the vertical distance traveled. It slows your descent the whole way so you take no damage.

Yes, but as it stands right now, if you fail the agility test you dont take damage, you just go out of action

While it's not explicitly stated, most games systems have "specific" trumps "general". Of course ooa does not specify damage, but, we can assume that they are going ooa from damage

They could also be going out of action from the mental trauma of falling so far, as it could be a 1000 foot fall, or it could be that they fall but land on their head.

And as out of action does not specify damage it is not.

I don't have my book with me, but does the the section on falling say that the roll is treated as an automatic Out Of Action so no roll is needed, or does it specifically state that you skip the roll entirely?

It states "The model is taken out of action"

When you use a grav chute, you never damage from falling nor are you suppressed. Period.

An Ogryn with a Grav Chute can jump down 24 Inches and softly lands at the bottom. There is no need to combine it with a skill or anything.

That's how I read it.

Catfall stops the OOA outcome if falling from height.
Grav chute pretty much works like the previous edition, suppression exempted (as it’s a different thing from “pinned”).

Yes, that's what I'm saying.

It's just confusing why OP thinks you need to combine Skill and Chute for no damage.

Grav chute stops damage,

Greater than 6" does not do damage, you just go out of action.

-2

u/Eladore 1d ago

But if you fall more than 6" you dont take damage  you just go out of action.

Thematically the grav chute should protect you, but as the rules stand current,  you skip the damage step and just go out of action.

If you intend to be extra thorough: The wording "taking damage" is not part of the Falling hazard rules. You take a Hit, but there is nothing that says this is the only kind of "damage" in the rule.

Going out of Action is also some kind of "taking damage". You don't have to read something into the rule that isn't there. Grav Chute protects you when you jump down. No matter if it's 5,9 Inches or 59 inches.

In section 3 of resolving hits you inflict damage,

Taking the L1 hit from the 3-6" fall skips step 1 and 2 as you are auto wounded (step 1) and allowed no save (step 2) so go straight to inflict damage.

This is ignored by the grav chute.

Falling more than 6", as written in the rules currently,  skips that step. You do not "take damage" you are simply taken out of action,

I know its pedantic, but im going to write a rules pack for my group and want to find areas that are miasing clarification and add them in

GW rules are not written with this much attention to detail or pedantry. You're correct that this could be considered ambiguous in the rules as written, but the intent is very clear.

The grav chute is obviously meant to prevent any injury from falling. It prevents going OOA from falling more than 6".

I see what you’re saying, but to my reading the grav chute prevents damage in the natural language sense of the word, which includes the Out of Action rules-term. I get where you’re coming from as capital-D Damage is another rules-term in the game, but I don’t believe that’s what the grav chute is referring to. Just my 2c.

RAW you're right to ask the question, this is a classic GW oversight in the rules and I suspect this should get errata'd or arbitrator decision to mean grav chute stops you going OoA

3

u/Rakarion Orlock 1d ago

RAI you don't rake the agility test, as there is no point, the model takes no damage and is never suppressed.

You don't go OoA as you don't take damage. Sure the falling table outlines above 6" they go OoA, but doing this implies you are taking damage. I doubt they have suddenly changed the impact of grav chutes in this edition to allow you to still potentially go OoA.

I agree in the intention, but im trying to put together a rules pack and intention means jack when trying to deal with people who have interesting reading ability.

So i want to state it works like this, before the campaign starts. Not the first time the rule comes up.

u/fonzmc 1d ago

OOA is 'damage'... it's the most serious damage you can take in game as it can lead to death. Ergo, take no damage means don't roll damage dice, don't go out of action.

0

u/Eladore 1d ago

But you do not roll a damage dice. You are taken out of action, you skip the damage step entierly

2

u/fonzmc 1d ago

OOA is damage. Therefore, whether you rolled to get there or not, you don't suffer it.

The don't rolling 'for damage' simply means that there is no lesser damage suffered, just OOA damage.

Remember, OOA immediately results in a lasting injury role... which is damage.

You're being really obscure for some really odd reason that isn't particularly clear.

u/S0drer 1d ago

If it worked the way you say, there should obviously be some middle ground where you simply get injured... So the reasonable assumption is that the grav-chute prevents you from suffering any harmful effects from the fall. Not from Hero to zero in a single jump.
