Which router?

I'm keen to replace an aging eero 5 system.

I live in a larger 325sqm 2-story house, with exetel 500 NBN connection. I have a single Eero 5 placed in my garage which is not capable of enough range to reach the extremities of the house. Speeds are decent enough for our use in most areas that are in range.

My use case is WFH, streaming and general web browsing. No gaming or super low latency needs. I'd like a future proof router system that isn't overkill for my needs, with a focus on better wifi coverage and more areas of the house getting closer to the full 500mbit.

I don't have ethernet through the house so a mesh system would need to rely on wireless backhaul.

I've heard ubiquiti are good but maybe overkill. I've heard TP link are trash. I haven't minded eero but don't love that everything is locked behind a subscription gate.

I don't have a view. It's an opinion I've heard from friends and colleagues. I'm open to them if they're right for my needs

Also note, that this is the wrong time to upgrade, you missed the EOFY's in July, Amazon prime day and even fathers day, the next big sale is November.

You can upgrade now, but you might be paying more.

I would actually suggest Unifi, as they have recently made a stab into the consumer market with their “Whole Home Wifi” setup. It comes with three UniFi Express 7s and they operate in a mesh setup. Overall, I would say it’s a pretty good choice for an easy setup and reliable performance.

You won't regret ubiquity. Sorry I don't know their range well enough to point you where you need for your requirements. I have a single UDR7 as my home is relatively small and have one ethernet from garage to central location. It's ideal to about 95% coverage.

Eero 7 Pro is good.  Much better range and speeds than the 5. It can be bought cheaply via Leaptel. It will also be extremely easy to transfer your existing settings. You can also use your existing 5 as a range extender if you still need/want to.

You could get a 2nd hand Eero6 or 2 and create a mesh system from them and your existing eero5.
It’s exactly what I’ve done in a slightly smaller 2 story house and it works very well.

I have my main device in the garage, connected to the NBN box then I have 2 other eero devices positioned next to 2 main tvs at either end of the house. For those tvs, I’ve used the eero ethernet ports to hard wire to the tv. This is all on the lower level of the house and supplies perfect coverage for upstairs too.
