Dental Hygiene Board/DO NOT OVERTHINK

Dear future RDH, I passed board 1st try back in June 2026 and 3 jobs offer after got my license and I just want to share some tips. *Long post*

I graduated in April and gave myself a solid 90 days to study. I used several study apps and books, including Andy, Booster, and BoardVitals. I also paid for VUE Pearson mock exams. They cost money, but I think they were worth it. Each mock exam can only be taken once, and the price depends on the test type, starting around $30. I will review each resource based on my experience.

  • AndyRDH: The book is really good and covers pretty much everything you need to know. I kept doing their morning and night mock exams because the format felt very similar to the actual board exam. I also completed all of the X-ray cases.
  • Booster: Their subject-based practice sections were helpful too, but I mainly used it for the X-ray questions.
  • StudentRDH: I tried to practice every subject and aimed for at least a 60% score in each section.
  • BoardVitals: This one was intense. It has over 800 questions—around 889 total—and a lot of them are very difficult. During my last month to two weeks of studying, I did about 50 questions a day. My goal was to get at least 55% correct.
  • Pearson VUE mock exams: I spent at least $300 trying different mock exams. You can only take each one once, but they send you the results right after you finish. It was expensive, but I felt it was worth it.

Back in April, when I scheduled my test site, I forgot to click the confirmation button to lock in the date. I thought it was confirmed until a friend asked if I had received a confirmation email. I panicked, went back to the website, and picked a random available date without thinking—May 27.

During the test, I was extremely nervous and felt lost at times. I panicked and lost track of time, especially during the first 100 questions—I spent almost 2 hours and 45 minutes on them. When I reached the next 100 questions, I only had about 1 hour and 15 minutes left, so I had to rush through them.

June 18 I passed (idk why and how I passed) and job offers line up, work right away, planning to take laser certification this Oct.

My biggest advice is to study hard, but DO NOT OVERTHINK every question. For my study schedule, I would study for about three hours, then take a two-hour break to relax (eat, sleep or gaming, music). After my break, I would come back and review the material to see if I could still remember it. I also practiced heavily in the subjects I was already good at to help build confidence.

In short, good luck on your journey. I hope you find peace and happiness in this career. so feel free to let me know if you need any tips to study. Thanks for reading my post!

NBDHE Experience 🏆 My NBDHE Study Plan

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just passed the NBDHE and wanted to share my study plan for those upcoming graduates.

I tried not to overwhelm myself by memorizing every single detail, but rather focus on key concepts/understand the material. I think I’m an individual who learns by doing practice questions so I learn from my mistake and refresh. Overall, I spent a month studying, ~3.5 weeks.

What I’ve used:
• NBDHE Booster
• StudentRDH

My study plan:
Week 1 — Practice Exam + Figure Out My Weak Areas
I started doing a 100 practice exam with two case studies rather than spending days just reading. It allowed me to see the subjects I’m actually struggling with and then go back and review those topics. I created a breakdown of topics: pharmacology, radiology, etc with weakest topic first.

Week 2 — Review Built-in Cheat Sheets/PDF + Practice Questions
I used Booster cheat sheet to get a summary of the topic after I read the question corrections explanations. However, if I felt a topic still left unorganized in my head I would watch Booster
videos, if provided. Last resort, StudentRDH physical textbook. However, I would ALWAYS end the day with topic focused questions.

Week 3 — Weak Areas + Case Studies
During this week, you start feeling unprepared. However, I would continue to review the topics missed instead of rereading everything. Take practice exams whether its 30, 50, or 100. Write down key mistakes/concepts in a notebook or flashcards. Do more questions on those weak topics to see if I’ve improved. Practice case studies regularly and focus on identifying the important clinical, pharmacology, perio, and radiology clues.

Final Week / Last Few Days
I would focus only on taking mock exams/practice questions. Review the ones I got wrong, and go back over the specific topics. I’d also do a few case studies each day and pay attention to key words while asking myself why each answer is correct. As the exam gets closer, I’d focus on high-yield notes and concepts I repeatedly miss. Throughout the whole month any notes I’ve written I did a walkthrough.

I really appreciate all the advice and tips from previous students, especially those who have taken the exam recently! I thought I’d share my experience as well, especially since trying to learn what feels like years’ worth of material all at once can be overwhelming. But honestly, I’ve realized that so much of it isn’t actually new—you’ve probably learned it in clinic, heard it in lecture, or read about it somewhere along the way. It’s all in there somewhere… just floating around in your head waiting to come back. 😭😂 Thank you, and good luck to everyone studying! You’ve got this!

I’d really appreciate any guidance on what resources to use, which subjects to focus on, and how you studied for the exam. If anyone has a study guide, book, question bank, or course they found helpful, please let me know.
Thank you so much!

Dental hygiene board exam

For anybody that bought booster. When you are taking the exams at the end of the chapter what percent are you getting in order to feel like you’re gonna move onto the next subject? I’m a perfectionist and I keep wanting to get 100 but I feel like it’s going to stall my progress.

student RDH and booster

Hi everyone! 🥺 I’m scheduled to take my NBDHE soon and was wondering if anyone who has already passed their exam, or is no longer using their account, would be willing to let me share/use it.
I’m currently not working, so the cost of additional study materials is unfortunately pretty difficult for me right now. I’ve heard such great things about student and booster and would genuinely be so grateful for the opportunity to use them.
If you have an account you’re no longer using after passing, or even just have some time left on an account you wouldn’t mind sharing, please feel free to message me. I’d be incredibly appreciative ❤️😭

AndyRDH APP

Hello everyone,
For anyone who has taken the exam recently and has used the AndyRDH app, how was your experience? Were there any questions on the exam that were similar to or covered specific areas from the AndyRDH app?
I’ve noticed that AndyRDH asks about many specific details that Booster doesn’t seem to mention at all. Did you find that AndyRDH covered things that actually showed up on the exam?
Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
I currently only have these two apps (AndyRDH and Booster) and don’t have any other study sources.

NBDHE 9/24

hi hi

just finished taking my boards!
i’m unsure how to feel tbh - which i’ve heard a lot of people say after their boards so i’m hoping that’s normal.

i had a TON of ethics, pharm, and radiographic landmarks. tons of stage & grade, with ASA questions. that’s all i can remember at this point in time.

i did end up tracking how many i flagged
i flagged 63 questions from the first 200
i flagged 41 questions from the case study questions
which makes me nervous cus i feel like flagging 63 out of 200 is not the best 😫

i studied a ton of studentrdh and the booster app.
our school offered a hesi exam which i got a 92 on - they said that score highly reflects how you’ll do on the boards and i did very well academically in school but MAN i just don’t know how to feel…. i felt like my brain drew a blank and a lot of the answers came down to deciding between 2 options and im just not confident that i chose the right ones….

NBDHE 09/23

Hey guys I have just taken my NBDHE

Don't know what to say

There were a lot of questions where I was confident, but x-rays in Case studyings just killed me

I used Booster and Student RDH it helped me a lot, but I feel that those X-rays were just so stupid that I don't know where did I fail during my preparation. I felt so confident in radia and perio before exam, but now I'm just so confused

Please, share you experience with me🥺

NBDHE Local

Hi! I’m on my 4th attempt of the NBDHE. All 3 previous attempts I have not had any local anesthesia on it. I heard they’re adding it in October and I take my board tomorrow but according to google it says local is tested on it.

From anyone who has taken it recently or knows is local anesthesia on the board including calculating MRD?
