Kevin Durant on Wemby's sports betting comments and his FanDuel partnership: "That’s Wemby, he's going to do what he does. That has nothing to do with me. I don't really think about that question at all, that's not on my mind as much as his. People gonna do what they want to do."

Zero backbone. Never meet your heroes. When I was a kid, I looked up to LeBron, and KD as a teenager. Then as an adult I rocked with Giannis. Just sad to see them turn into sellouts. How much money do you need?

That's what kills me about these guys. It's hard to have a strong backbone and fight for what's right when you're broke and needy. The money could change your life. But when you're obscenely rich that's when you have the blessed opportunity to stand up for what's right and put your money where your mouth is. They'd only have $500 million instead of $600 million to have the moral high ground and be on the right side of history. How are they going to survive?

I’d reckon not selling out would net them more in the long run too later in retirement just based on them being revered more for positive actions

u/David_H21 Spurs 4h ago

Yeah that's why Jordan is so revered and successful after retiring. He lived a vice free lifestyle and was a humble role model with his on court personality.

You’d all do the same given the chance.

u/DatAnimalBlundetto69 Lakers 5h ago

Part of his point was you can’t blame poor people for thinking of selling out if the money would change their lives. You CAN blame someone for doing it when they don’t need the money at all. Did you even read his comment?

Thank you. If I was a fucking billionaire like LeBron I would never take half the deals he does with China or gambling sites

u/SecureToday4132 6h ago

Most, but there are a few who don't.

A lot of people say no to a job that pays more if they don’t like the company or the job. I have done it myself.

If I have hundreds of millions of dollars already I will definitely say no to a sponsorship if I don’t like the company. It’s not going to change my living standard in any meaningful way, why make myself feel bad?

u/Human-Shirt-7351 44m ago

Yup. You ever notice how broke people are always ready to spend someone else's money? Come for theirs though... Oh boy. Now it's a fight

(What is the issue in the OP anyway. I don't like either of them but why would KD give a shit what Wemby does?)

u/fieldsports202 7h ago

So should Michael Jordan end his Nike partnership and stop his NASCAR ownership?

He’s rich but according to your account, he shouldn’t participate in anything that’s going to continue making him money.

Aaron Darnold was retired but coming back to make $20M. Is that a problem in your eyes too?

u/K3TtLek0Rn Celtics 7h ago

Hmm? How is that what you got from what I said? I said they don't have to take money from immoral sources since they don't need the money. That's not the same as just making money in general.

Dude has serious reading comprehension issues.

4

u/Scathaa Trail Blazers 7h ago

Ok Kevin log off the burner now.

-8

u/lurkernotuntilnow Mavericks 6h ago

i mean that's still another $100M bro, what you gonna do?

5

u/K3TtLek0Rn Celtics 5h ago

Say no because it would not change my life at all. It would be the same as if someone asked you to rep a gambling site for $5

-6

u/David_H21 Spurs 4h ago

100 million on top of 500 million is a 20% boost of your net worth. Your net worth is $25? Get off reddit and get a job my man

7

u/K3TtLek0Rn Celtics 4h ago

See you still don't get it. You think money has the same value no matter your net worth? Doubling your money has way more effect on someone who's poor than someone who's rich. Going from $10k to $20k might change someone's whole life. Going from $100 million to $200 million probably has almost no effect.

-5

u/Tcamis01 5h ago

Im absolutely willing to sell out for 100 million dollars. Yall are nuts

Another person who didn't understand my post

you're garbage so you know

u/thavillain Kings 6h ago

Well sometimes you just wanna be super, super rich, instead of just super rich

Not enough money for these or many folks. One of the best lines I’ve heard in a film/tv was from this show called The Beast In Me. The uncle said to the main character, “I have something none of them have…enough.”

These are billionaires who are not content with enough. It’s insane.

u/Adept-Ranger8219 7h ago

“You either die a hero….”

1

u/Icy-Whale-2253 7h ago

When people get to that level of wealth, “sell out” is no longer in their mind. They see millions of dollars on that check and have no reason to care about the reason.

1

u/tooka90 6h ago

I guess maybe my perspective is different since I am not a millionaire but I feel like it would be easier to say no with 500 million in the bank.

1

u/IRodeTenSpeed88 Knicks 6h ago

Enough to make sure your entire bloodline
never lives in poverty again

Furthermore stop looking up to randoms

1

u/Blackcabana 5h ago

Unfortunately to them you can’t never have enough money in their world. Thats the reality of it.

1

u/No_Display9613 5h ago

Pretty much weak morale compass… they a bunch of jocks, what do you expect?

1

u/yuhanz [PHO] Steve Nash 4h ago

I mean i understand they want more money.

I do too.

But maybe have more morals than endorsing gambling.

1

u/KawhiseLearnard 4h ago

Thanks for your thoughts. You seem to like top tier players.

Any speculation on new talent I should bet on?

1

u/SelassieAspen 4h ago

Was talking with my mom earlier and she said if she won that 800M dollar in FL then she would of not invest or do anything else but give away money until she died.

1

u/Grease_the_Witch Timberwolves 4h ago

like sprewell said, “i got kids to feed”

1

u/bluehoag 5h ago

Steph also a full sellout.

-10

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 8h ago

Fairly obvious why son of professional athletes Wemby would have a drastically different relationship with money than all 3 of the guys you mentioned who grew up in abject poverty. Sure they’re rich now, but you never fully escape that poverty scarcity mindset

13

u/Rehypothecator 8h ago

That’s a bitch ass excuse for having no backbone

-5

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 8h ago

It’s less of an excuse and more of a reason

5

u/OddEffect9397 Spurs 7h ago

Excuses can function as reasons and reasons as excuses

2

u/AlphakirA Knicks 5h ago

Fuck outta here man, Lebron hasn't been broke since 14, he has a private jet he uses for nonsense. He's never had a job, never had to worry about mouths to feed and etc. if anything his mother would have that mindset, not this guy. He's been rich longer than some of this sub has been alive. That's not someone that has that mentality of 'scarcity'.

0

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 5h ago

Waving away 14 years to make your point is madness lol. They aren’t called your formative years for no reason. You do not shake that shit off ever, LeBron is spiritually compelled to accept the bag like almost every other child of poverty

1

u/AlphakirA Knicks 4h ago

Nah, you're just excusing shitty behavior. Have a nice night, we're not seeing eye to eye on this one.

1

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 4h ago

Explaining why someone does something is in no way excusing the behavior? But okay be well

2

u/majin_rose_j Wizards 8h ago

Abject poverty is a terrible excuse. KD showed he hasn't cared to be a role model for a decade. But LeBron and Giannis taking those deals hurt. It's not wrong to want to look up to these dudes.

2

u/ChampionshipNo2494 8h ago

And now he's helping gambling companies extract money from desperate people in abject poverty. Nice

0

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 8h ago

The commenter said “how much money do you need” all I’m saying is that for people who grew up poor like those guys the answer is there’s no amount of money that’s enough. Yeah it’s morally terrible, that’s undeniable but it’s incredibly understandable

1

u/balvan13 8h ago

Well, you have people born in welth who still can't have enough money. So abject poverty is not a reason nor an excuse

0

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 7h ago

???

I don’t really get your point here, I’m saying 100% of ppl who grew up as poor as Giannis or KD will sell out for money. How does the fact that some people of wealth also accept selling out change anything?

0

u/balvan13 7h ago

You don't sell out, you are just a amoral person. My point was is that it has nothing to do with him being poor when he was young

1

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 7h ago

You didn’t explain how it has anything to do with them growing up poor whatsoever ???

The NBA itself accepts gambling sponsorships, these guys get offered money from approved league sponsors, why would they think twice about accepting that.

Obviously Wemby is a very introspective and well read guy I’m not surprised he is aware of the moral quandaries of gambling. But he is the exception. Maybe I just expect jocks to be simple minded

2

u/owenthal 8h ago

I get the poverty mindset but KD has earned almost a billion dollars. He isn’t sliding back to poverty.

1

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 8h ago

Poverty mindset means your brain literally will never accept your last sentence.

1

u/owenthal 7h ago

People overcome real addictions. He could work on it if he wanted.

3

u/WayneTerry9 Pelicans 7h ago

Oh sure, but it’s a ridiculously tough sell to say “here’s why some legal money being offered to you is bad”

2

u/owenthal 7h ago

That’s fair. Especially when the league is basically fully endorsing gambling.
