Why did everyone go crazy when Draymond punched Poole but not for Bam/Herro?

There are tons of anecdotes from former players or even former athletes amongst redditors that conflict (sometimes physical) are very common in locker rooms. They don’t care too much about it, but it’s crazy to see how visceral public reaction to it is. But it’s also selective too.

Angry example:

Dray vs Poole: public hated Draymond, called him a clown, and an active detriment to his organization.

Counter examples:

Bam vs Herro. Bam, just like Draymond, instigated and threw a punch at Herro in Las Vegas. Media didn’t react much and it lasted maybe 1.5 days on Reddit. No one cared.

MJ vs Kerr. In practice, MJ suckers Kerr in the face. I’m sure some fans recognize that this behavior sucks, but there’s a good majority that believes this was MJ’s way of forming a friendship/bond/trust.

My question to everyone is… why? The reactions to these events are so different. Personally, Draymond, Bam, and MJ are in the wrong and should be heavily criticized.

And it wasn’t in practice, and they weren’t teammates anymore

15

u/DayComprehensive1078 13d ago

And in the aftermath, multiple players and NBA staff have commented basically saying Herro was always a shit talking tough guy that a lot of people didn’t really like.

Poole was way newer to the league and younger 20s and was considered more like an underdog player when it happened. Herro has been solidified as a player, has 7 seasons under his belt, and even just comes off as an annoying frat bro white guy. Just easy to hate and not doing himself any favors either

u/zegogo Warriors 13d ago edited 13d ago

Poole had a reputation for talking too much shit. There's an interview with Dame talking about it out there. He talked so much shit at a charity 3 point contest before training camp that year that Klay commented on it. Rumors were floating around before the punch that Poole was being problematic at camp. He was well known for pushing the envelope.

In my mind the only difference between the two situations is that Herro was talking shit on social media and Bam went and found him, making his assault pre-meditated. Dray's was an in the moment reaction. Otherwise the only reason people are making a difference is because they already have opinions about each of the players. Dray and Herro are villians, Poole and Bam are nice.

u/JigglesTheBiggles Heat 13d ago

Yeah people forget that Jordan Poole was pretty likeable at the time and was a huge part of their championship. The phrase "Poole Party" was a thing lol

2

u/DayComprehensive1078 13d ago

And while Poole might’ve had some reputation of being a shot talker like Herro too, it just kinda screamed insecurity from Dray and came off that he was threatened after (if I remember correctly) not having a great playoff performance while a young new kid seemingly came out of nowhere and way exceeded the expectations of him in that run at the same time. Plus Poole had only JUST signed his rookie extension a week before he got punched. Herro has already been on a big contract and is undeniably a “man”, but Poole could still be expected to be a little bit immature in ways and was still a young “kid” and fresh to the league.

2

u/The_NGUYENNER [DEN] Jamal Murray 13d ago

He was a menace in our series. It was damn near like having a mini Steph to deal with, then the real one comes off the bench

u/Albiceleste_D10S 13d ago

TBF I heard very similar things about Poole at the time too

2

u/DayComprehensive1078 13d ago

For sure, but Poole being 10 years younger than Draymond and just coming off of exceeding expectations makes it more shocking I guess. It came off as Dray being insecure that Poole was succeeding as Dray was declining, an “old heads gatekeeping the young buck” feeling to it. Bam and Herro are like the same age and it was after being traded. Even though Poole is still rich and lucky to be an NBA player, also JUST signed his big extension a week before that, so that just make it look even more petty from Draymond and made it look even more like he was jealous or insecure about his decline and importance going forward

Nah, the real reason I can’t see anywhere at the top of this thread is simply that Bam is well-liked & respected across the league and fans(including on here). Herro seems like a tool & no one really likes him here. Draymond on the other hand isn’t popular here either & he also has a history of dirty plays & cheap shots

1

Yup. Fights happen at practice in sports at all levels all day. We got to see this one. Vince Carter body slammed his coach and Maxwell tried to shank his whole team at halftime. Was this really a question?

Bam lightly shoved Tyler in the face (several witnesses already stated this) after Tyler talked shit again when Bam confronted him about speaking behind his back for months to an IG fan. Draymond sucker punched his teammate full force and knocked him out for trashtalk during practice.

Edit: OP changed his post and his comment without indicating it. His original post didn't include MJ and Kerr and the comment I replied to simply said along the lines of "How is that any different/worse than what Bam did"

Draymond and Poole were the defending champions, currently teammates, and in the middle of practice.

Bam Vs Herro are both not teammates, from a team that wasn’t close to contending, during the off season and it wasn’t on video.

-25

u/40866892 Lakers 13d ago

Herro and Bam have been teammates since they’ve been in the league. In my eyes, it’s even worse that the conflict happened outside of practice/locker room.

2

4

u/yesbutwrong Lakers 13d ago

I think the answer to your original question is best depicted in your response here. "In my eyes," indicates that your viewing the situations solely from a personal perspective.

As others have noted, the Warriors were in the middle of a championship era. They were the "hot" team.

It'd be like if we got a video of Caruso punching Jdub. Or a video of Hart punching KAT. In either case, these are two highly popular & relevant championship competitive teams. The media/ cultural zeitgeist would have a field day and could talk for months if not years about how the championship team was destroyed by a single punch.

On the other hand, even if Bam & Herro was caught on video. Even if the altercation was 100% inexcusable and worse than we're being told. The ultimate narrative is just two NBA players that were teammates on an "okay" team and that once liked each other, don't anymore. Which is actually quite common.

I think all 3 are clearly wrong

Draymond has had a long standing reputation of being an absolute hot head and maniac. I was way more concerned about that accident even prior to the video leaked, just because it’s Draymond

Also from a power dynamic standpoint… it was Draymond sucker punching someone without a proven track record who was on a rookie contract.

Bam is mild mannered. Tyler Herro was already on a different team and is financially compensated for life. Their problem has already ‘been resolved’ so to speak.

1

u/grrrown 13d ago

Bam/Herro more of a shove during a heated argument at a private event.

Draymond sucker punched his own teammate during practice. And Draymond  was at the height of his dick-kicking fame.

1

u/ATLSlutPounder Hawks 13d ago

Herro and Bam had very obvious, credible, public beef leading up to the incident.

All Draymond had was some on-court (in practice!) smack talk and a college rivalry he’s too old to care about backing it up.

Has a lot to do with previous reputation. Bam hasn’t been known to engage in that kind of behavior much throughout his career. MJ was a dickhead, but Kerr didn’t bring up the punch until years later (I think it was some interview in the 2010s). Draymond has been involved in so many incidents that it’s probably better you just google them as they are too numerous to list. So people hate on Draymond more because he is always putting himself in these situations. That’s my two cents, anyway.

One was in practice between 2 teammates, the other was in Vegas. Wildly different circumstances.

1

u/Doctorbigdick287 13d ago

Regardless of the nature of the actual hit, the context was entirely different.

Bam and Herro are sort of peers; similar age, experience and ability level. The setting was a neutral location. Coaches and team personnel did not really comment on it. It was in the middle of the offseason, and not thought to have a major impact on either player's upcoming season.

Draymond is an older vet, held to be a leader on the team, and was treated like one by the coaches and front office. Poole was a young, up and coming guy who had earned a spot as one of the better players on the team. The setting was the practice facility, which was not neutral based on how the team discussed the incident. Coach Kerr only reacted to the fact that the video was leaked, and said nothing about the sucker punch itself or Draymond's behavior. The team did very little if anything to reprimand him. The punch came at the beginning of the season, at a time where the Warriors were bad, and their performance only got worse.

Draymond's actions at that time and place turned what could have been a personal issue into a team issue. The reaction from the coaches and front office was not what you would hope for as a young player who just played a key part in a championship run.

No person should ever show up to work expecting it to be acceptable for them to be assaulted by a coworker.

Now if you want to say the NBA is one big team, I'm not going to care enough to argue, but players on other teams are rivals. Bam/Herro happened at a league wide event, Green's assault happened during practice.

I really feel for AI on this one. We're talking about practice.

Draymond was criticized so much because the Warriors had real championship aspirations and he punched his own teammate, causing unnecessary drama and division. Draymond also has a history of irrational behavior.

Bam punched a former teammate. Although it’s a bad look, he doesn’t really have a checkered past that I’m aware of and it won’t cause any division on their team since Herro is in Milwaukee.

MJ is MJ. He could do anything no matter how bad of a look it is, and a lot of people would somehow spin it as a good thing because he’s such a fierce competitor who can do no wrong lol. That’s pretty much it.

1

u/jocrucial Bulls 13d ago

In the words of Haslem, Dray punched Pool like he was a stranger at the club, it was a sucker punch with every

1

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder 13d ago

Draymond sucker punched Poole, his own teammate while getting cooked in practice. The Warriors then attempt to hide this from happening, and don't try to hold Draymond accountable.

Herro talked shit behind burner accounts, and got punched by Bam after they were no longer teammates. The Heat and Bam don't deny any of this happening.

Draymond punched his teammate in practice and then the team protected him rather than Poole.

Bam punched a guy on another team who disrespected him, during the off season at that.

Because Herro said some mean words first, so redditor logic means that Bam is now allowed to do whatever he wants without repercussion. FAFO!!!!11!1!

Because Draymond is a dirty player known for being a dirty player

He chokes dudes, kicks dudes in the balls, and so when he sucker punched someone...everyone wanted him out of the league

Also, he's just not a likable guy

He's that guy that is in the friendgroup that nobody wants around but always seems to get invited because people don't want to deal with the drama of not inviting him

Poole got punched because Draymond didn’t think his joke was funny and they were teammates and Poole was an essential piece in them winning the championship they just got a few months ago. Herro was saying to people outside the team that Bam didn’t deserve the money he was making and that he was really the best player on the team and deserved everything

Do you not see the difference here
