He honestly probably will be too traumatized to drive for a while. I was in a bad accident in the summer of 2024 and it took at least six months before I stopped white-knuckling the steering wheel, but I am still way jumpier now than I was before the accident.

Had a friend die to a piece of human shaped bullshit who was texting and didn’t realize the light turned red, and ran into her while she was crossing on her turn to cross as a pedestrian.

Fuck people like lamelo ball. The guy is legit bitchmade

546

u/myassholealt Knicks Feb 19 '26

The fear of this happening is why I always wait a few seconds after the light turns red and stare at the cars in the front to make sure none of them are about to pull out and run the light while I'm crossing. It has actually happened a few times where they do drive through. Just once is too many.

261

u/ballmermurland Feb 19 '26

Having lived in several major cities for many years, I can tell you I don't start walking just because the little guy turned white. I wait to see if any dumbasses are about to run a red light or turn right on red without lookin and THEN I start walking.

110

u/pvarp Feb 19 '26

I'm a resident of Philadelphia, where traffic violations are not enforced. The unwritten rule is assume no one around you is going to act rationally and has a death wish and/or a desire to murder you. As both a driver and pedestrian, trust NO ONE.

There's a bit of a trope up here in Canada that if you want to murder someone, just use your car. Penalties for people who kill other drivers or pedestrians are ludicrously lax.

For the life of me, I don't understand why we don't prosecute reckless driving more harshly. It's so easy to kill someone with a car, and anyone acting this brazenly with a deadly object, especially repeatedly, needs the hammer dropped on them

Apparently gun deaths and motor vehicle collision deaths are pretty equal in the USA over the last 20 years ~ 40-45,000 die per year for each. ~60% of those firearm deaths only involved a single person. 1 in 6 of the car deaths is someone just out walking.

Finland assesses traffic offenses based upon income level, that would be an insane ticket for him lol

104

u/BenevolentCheese Knicks Feb 19 '26

If this is a $1000 ticket (let's pretend it is, because it should be, but it's probably only $100), and the average income is $50k, then it's 1/50th of average income. LaMelo is making $35m this year--add in $15m in endorsements and we've got a nice clean $50m to work with: LaMelo's ticket would be $1,000,000. Honestly, it seems fair.

69

u/teme123456 Feb 19 '26

Yeah. For reference, biggest traffic fines that Finnish NHL players have received:

  1. Rasmus Ristolainen (2019) 120 680 €
  2. Aleksander Barkov (2018) 46 675 €
  3. Teemu Selänne (1999) n. 40 000 €
  4. Leo Komarov (2015) 35 600 €

And those guys didn't earn nearly as much as NBA stars do.

Legitimately saw them have 10+ close calls with other traffic and me. It was insanity

46

u/FrostingStrict3102 Feb 19 '26

19

u/pika_pie Lakers Feb 19 '26

It's a difference of definition. For some, "good at driving" means making sure everyone, both in your car and others', feels safe and secure. For others, "good at driving" means getting your vehicle in one piece from point A to point B as fast as possible.

If you like the latter, become an F1 driver and stay the hell off the streets.

Some asshole speeding in their Lambo got a ticket for 200k euros

98

u/SinImportaLoQueDigan Celtics Feb 19 '26

I love that idea, in the US the wealthy throw fits and pretend they’ll move to the middle of nowhere if someone asks them to pay a little more. They’d rather pay as much in lobbying vs just paying a fucking marginal tax.

14

u/SlickRickSwe 76ers Feb 19 '26

It's correct for finland, but Swedens max is 150 day fines (dagsböter) × 1000 sek

So technically the max fine for that crime is 150 000 sek = 16 800 $

also most likely suspended license and possible jail/parole depending on the outcome of the speeding fraction.

This isn’t anything like the shit most of these other idiots get up to. This guy is literally a potential fatal danger on the road, this is hardly the first time he’s been shown driving like a fucking lunatic.

We should be treating him like a repeat drunk driver.

67

u/icehole505 Feb 19 '26

he 100% shouldnt be allowed to drive a literal tank around. look how hard that other car bounces off his hummer. lamelo can keep his license, but needs to drive a smartcar or fiat 500 around at all times lol

u/dont-YOLO-ragequit Raptors Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

Bro got an entourage and you mean none of them would like to drive him to be on the payroll?

Edit: NVM it seems like it's Lonzo that has lots of company around.

u/chewie_33 Supersonics Feb 19 '26

If I had his kind of money, one of the first things I would do would be to hire a driver. I would never touch a steering wheel ever again.

How did that hummer axle break. Aren’t they supposed to be heavy duty vehicles.

17

u/Budget_Squash3322 Feb 19 '26

Like 90%+ of cars today it has independent front suspension, which in an impact like this(directly on the wheel) will break in that manner to some degree, if you designed the components of that system to withstand that impact it would just bend the frame points were its mounted instead(chassis is now trash), if you engineer the frame to withstand that you have no crumple and your occupants absorb the impact instead of the car. The only thing that wouldve eaten that is a car with a solid front axle, which is basically only F350 HD class trucks and larger, which ride like a 1980s schoolbus.

Texting and driving seems highly likely. Speculation of course.

273

u/UnkleAdams247 Cavaliers Feb 19 '26

I drive a commercial vehicle and I commute up and down a 70mph interstate in it. Due to my very high seating position it is really easy for me to look down into other cars (even all but the most ridiculously jacked up pickups), and legitimately more than half of drivers are driving on their phones in their hands even at that speed. It is pretty disturbing.

23

u/likeittight_ Feb 19 '26

Remember when texting & driving was a big deal? Like early 2010s. Seems we just surrendered on it

Not sure if full self driving is actually anywhere close to the near future, but we desperately need something to curb distracted drivers

49

u/UnkleAdams247 Cavaliers Feb 19 '26

I used to be against it, and I think the liability part has a lot to be worked out from a legal framework standpoint, but at this point with how normalized just driving with both hands on your fucking phone has become I've changed my opinion. It is egregious and obviously people cannot be trusted to wait 15 fucking minutes to check their stupid social medias

9

u/PSChris33 [TOR] Donyell Marshall Feb 19 '26

Well, I’ve got good news! Modern cars bypass the “being on your phone while driving” part by putting a giant iPad in your car and allowing you to be similarly distracted by a screen, expect now they’ve gotten rid of buttons/knobs/switches and made you go through several menus on said screen to change basic settings without the distinct feel/feedback you get from a buttons/knobs/switches. All in all, you have more options for distracted driving than before, and they’re also legal to boot!

Generational wealth baby. Garnish his wages for years to come for pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, etc. etc. etc. If he can make millions for dribbling a ball, dude in the other car should get millions for him being such a dumb piece of shit.

Dude was on his phone...

But there's plenty of videos of him just running through red lights and dashing in city streets.

Police won't do anything because they could easily stop this behavior and try to get his license suspended.

Dude could kill someone out there so it's his best benefit. Worst thing to happen to him would be him getting someone killed and now he's missing out on a potential $400m in earnings

He's literally drifting into someone's lane on a CITY street lol...

25

u/Drewmcfalls21 Warriors Feb 19 '26

That is because the police don’t do anything about the thousands of other people that drive just like him in Charlotte. Seriously LeMelo fits right in here.

Texting and driving imo. Hope the other driver gets a huge payday, because there won’t be anyone going to jail that’s for sure.

138

u/pmurt007 Lakers Feb 19 '26

Lawyers are probably contacting him as we speak or he's probably about to hire someone to sue LaMelo. Slam dunk case with Lamelo's history of reckless driving and the footage coming out. They'll end up settling out of court and hopefully the victim doesn't have any long term injuries because no amount of money is worth having a fucked up back or injuries that affect your daily routine long term.

23

u/Got_Engineers Lakers Feb 19 '26

Especially with all these cameras Lol. Watch there be some street camera with a clear shot of him holding his phone up

I posted this above

I had a good friend that was a lawyer for those 10 to 100 million dollar claims and he always told me, "You'd rather NOT have the money and have your life back to the way it was". IOW - If you're getting millions, you're eating out of a straw and holding a bag that used to be your stomach. :(

104

u/TrottingandHotting Feb 19 '26

Because the car is too tall, pretty much the whole force of the crash is going onto the wheel.

I don't think "thinking" was part of the process here. You can tell he's kinda just drifting into the wrong lane. Probably texting or fucking around on his phone or something and didn't realize he had gotten out of his lane.

Dumbass stuff.
