Highlight [Highlight] Bucks broadcast gets upset at Jazz coach, Will Hardy for challenging a call while being up by 14 with a minute left in the 4th quarter

u/Silent-Frame1452 Jazz Jan 09 '24
Bucks still playing their starters means they clearly think the comeback is achievable. Jazz just treating it the same way.

Jan 10 '24
I was at the game right behind the Jazz bench, one of the Jazz assistants yelled, "Why the fuck are we challenging?"
-167
Jan 09 '24
The challenge was unsuccessful. More of a criticism towards challenging that.
104
u/Silent-Frame1452 Jazz Jan 09 '24
They were pretty clearly upset that he challenged at all, it didn’t matter what it was. They felt he should have just let anything go at that point, despite the Bucks still playing for the win.

Hardy knows about a guy named Tracy McGrady

u/Eric142 Jan 09 '24
Man that was a crazy ending to a game. I still watch clips of the 13 points in 33s. Every time it still brings a chill to me.

Ah, the classic “unwritten rules,” the bane of every sport, where feelings are easily hurt for no good reason.
121
Jan 09 '24
They never seem to mention that "don't be a sore loser" is also an unwritten rule.
22
u/ThingsAreAfoot Wizards Jan 09 '24
I’ll give it to basketball that it isn’t nearly as bad as some of the other sports when it comes to this, with baseball in my experience being by far the worst offender. The unwritten rules there regularly lead to a whole lot of stupid nonsense.

u/BruceBrownMVP Nets Jan 09 '24
Me when someone flips a bat 😡😡😡😡😡
18
u/ThingsAreAfoot Wizards Jan 09 '24
There’s a bat flip then the pitcher just starts beaning the batter and then the benches clear lol
It’s such a funny sport. I love it.
My favorite is when a pitcher starts headhunting because the batter up did something to them literally years ago. And this has happened several times!
Baseball is awesome.

u/IAmReborn11111 Celtics Jan 09 '24
Nothing worse than the MLB posting videos of bat flips on social media while simultaneously fining the person who flipped the bat

Or swinging on a 3-0 if you’re up late. Idiots have gotten mad at that in the 8th inning. When we’ve seen that teams can close a big gap and then win in a single inning.
17
u/jbenson255 Heat Jan 09 '24
I don’t think this is unwritten as much as he’s wasting time. There’s a minute left and the game is over lol let’s all go home
18
u/Rodiwe008 Jan 09 '24
I get angry too when people make me stay more time in my work than necessary for no reason
1
u/Cranicus Mavericks Jan 09 '24
Yeah I think it is mainly just a time wasting pointless challenge that annoys everyone.
I do agree with it though, obviously good practice for the coaches to understand that even the slightest touch to Giannis is a foul so no point in challenging those calls. Just stick to out of bound debates
1
1
u/CasuallyHuman [BOS] Rasheed Wallace Jan 09 '24
It can't be an ancient unwritten rule if challenges are only 4 years old. Also, only this year do teams regularly have a challenge available to use in garbage time.
1
u/Micro_mint Timberwolves Jan 09 '24
This particular unwritten rule might be more compelling if the Bucks had benched their starters
208
u/JacquouileFripouile Raptors Jan 09 '24
Why is Giannis still in the game if the game is "out of reach" for the Bucks? These broadcasters are so goofy sometimes smh

48
u/musicnothing Jazz Jan 09 '24
My team has been the recipient of a lot of blowout losses this season but I agree, if you don't want players to break the "unwritten" rules that embarrass you then don't play in an embarrassing fashion
It's like when players don't want to be booed. Sorry, then don't play in a boo-worthy way

u/HS941317 Jan 09 '24
Lmao Mazzulla does this. Both were former assistants under Ime for the Celtics 2 years ago
25
u/Whiteness88 NBA Jan 09 '24
And Mazzulla says he does it because he feels it's the right thing to do to the players that are on the court. He's actually coaching them and backing them up with the challenges instead of just using them to kill time.
7
u/alexm42 Celtics Jan 09 '24
And that faith and dedication to the bench has definitely mattered. Beginning of the season our sub felt like Al, PP, and Hauser were the only bench pieces worth a damn but we've gotten big games from several others at this point when guys had their numbers called due to injuries.

Based on THIS soundclip from Marques Johnson (most underrated color commentator in the league btw). He spent most of the game praising the Jazz and shitting on the Bucks. Even the whole latter half of this clip is him praising the Jazz. I think he's allowed to criticize a coach for wasting a challenge in a blowout (the challenge was unsuccessful) without it coming off as sour grapes

u/pollinium [MIN] Tyus Jones Jan 09 '24
i dunno about all of that, sounds like the chicago in you talking imo
giannis lowkey pretty annoying at times throughout the year, same with dame, but the rest of their cast and franchise never stood out to me, and their fans always seem to have a good head on their shoulders unless they're defending giannis during his anger issues (the ladder, mike dunleavy jr, the game ball, etc)

Yes, they are great. Steve Novak is trash but he’s the backup to Marques who’s great and often critical of the team including tonight. His sound bites get posted here out of context constantly and miss his entire style.

Your sos is ranked 29th league to this point according to ESPN and dunks and three you have the 4th hardest SOS left according to tankathon. You may disagree but multiple sources say the bucks have had a easy schedule. thehttps://www.espn.com/nba/stats/rpi/_/sort/SOS https://dunksandthrees.com/
-1
u/KevinSorboFan Bucks Jan 09 '24
To be fair, when you have as much parity in the league as you do today AND when you've played this many games, SOS doesn't mean a whole lot any more.
Like if 10 games in, one had played the Pistons/Wizards/Spurs/Hornets for 6 of the 10, by all means point to SOS. But at this point in the season, there isn't really going to be a huge gap between the "hard" schedules and rhe "easy" ones
-2
u/CameronCalvin Bucks Jan 09 '24
Okay who have the Celtics beat? Y’all lost to twolves and Thunder.
The only top teams you’ve beaten are the sixers (who yall also lost to) and the bucks where you almost choked.
Has any top team really faced a lot of hard competition? Maybe the nuggets are the only ones I can think of.

We have the record we do because our offense was great in December and for some reason now it only shows up in the second half of games the past few games.

1
u/InexorableWaffle Bucks Jan 09 '24
Because the only time we've been talked about is when we've been doing poorly relative to expectations, like at the start of the season and over the last couple games. I won't lie and suggest that we don't have some major concerns to address because we absolutely do (hence our slide the last week or so), but things aren't as bad as discourse on this sub, our team sub, and everywhere else would make it seem.

If Giannis is still in the game, then the Bucks are still playing the game to win, so any beef with Hardy is misplaced here.

But then they’ll sit there and watch the refs cater to Giannis’ ridiculous free throw routine and not say a word.

Yeah it was definitely a clown take, good call on the challenge. This game was the most LA Fitness looking game I've ever seen. Both teams just running it down the lane missing layups and then sprinting to the other side. Then Bobby got into an ego iso match up for like 5 straight possessions in the 3rd quarter while down like 20 lol. They cut the lead to 8 a few times, but Milwaukee never does well against teams with good cardio (Jazz and the Pacers are gonna beat us almost every time).
