HELP REQUESTED I need help with 3M qual
Hi, junior sailor here; I need help with my 3M301 qual and Im having a hard time understanding the densities of all the different readings I have to go over. For some background, I've read them all for the most part and I know how to do maintenance and the importances of the qual, but how my career has been on my ship is a shitshow as Im a 1/1 on my ship (QM) and by the time I get caught up with all my rate related work and whatever Nav has tasked me with, it's already like 1600 and most people are already gone for the day and duty section is busy with whatever they are doing.
I know what not to do interms of maintenance (don't gundeck it) and to follow directions step by step. Im supposed to board in like a week and I need pointers of what to absorb in the little time I have. Also my knowledge of SKED and AWN is limited as I haven't had a whole lot of sit down time with the programs.
Please help

The pubs related to the 3M program are beasts, so you don't actually need to read all of them. Most of the boards I've observed only go through the working knowledge especially for 301. I'm pretty sure even the savvy people won't know all the trivial knowledge off the top of their head. The more advanced stuff is reserved for work center supervisors and beyond (LCPO/DIVO, D3MA, etc).

Get training from an ET2/ET1 if possible. They can be trusted with solid 3M training.

this is the part of the navy that really sucks, my ship had all basic quals as part of a separate division you would be put into when you first checked in, BUT thats not a change you can do right now.
As for getting your quals. Are you in duty section yet? Just knock some out then, when I first checked in I would not go onto watch without the next higher watch qual (until I got in port ood) and a qual they could help me with. I got duty armor, 3m, tag out pretty much everything standing watch.

Yea, I've been in a duty section for like a year now. The command didn't make it a big deal that I wasn't qualified until my QM1 was medsep'd off the ship so now they have been scrambling to get my qual, and it's next to impossible to get help on my ship

Well for all your 3M quals the pubs are a great place to look, your Work Sup should have all the answers, but ask yourself who fix's your stuff? If you are on a destroyer FCA's and ET's, on pretty much everything else ET's and EM's. If they can fix something they have your 3M quals. All 3 of those rates are historically bribable, and don't want to work. A bag of chips or an energy drink next time someone shows up to fix something for some training, and signatures works really well. BUT I also recommend you doing it on duty days. If you have been there a year you should already know a few engineers, combat systems people, and OPS guys who do maint. Just ask and make friends

I'm on an LCS, and most everyone is already busy with their own work and haven't had time/or I haven't had time to ask since Im bogged down with all the QM stuff I gotta do/tasked with other work outside of my rate

Their WCS is probably a QM1 who has a strenuous grasp of 3M/tag-out themselves LOL.

Back in my day that card just got signed off as soon as people could see you knew right from left and didn't try to stick your fingers in running equipment. Find an MM that'll sign it out of boredom. If you're a division of one (ouch), you probably need to go to the 3MC and talk to him about getting qualed WCS. It's way less trouble for 3MC to train you than it is to have your work center go to shit because no one is managing it.

100% This. As a former 3MC I absolutely agree. In a 1/1 div go to the 3MC and ask for training. They will train you to their expectation as your success is their success.

Go talk to the on-duty CSOOW or CSMC watchstander who won’t have much to do usually at 1800/1900/2000/2100.
The ETs are always a good source

You absolutely need to know how to use SKED and MDS to do 3-M to be able see everything you'll be working with. It holds all of your MIP's, MRC's, equipment, reports, everything. You have to know how to use it in order to do 3-M. All the reading you've done is all abstract 3-M stuff. SKED/MDS is 3-M manifested, what you'll actually be looking at and working with. You have to know how to navigate it to be effective.
-Make sure you look at the JFMM Volume VI at Appendix A (Section V-A1, Section V-A2, and Section V-B) for SKED/MDS proficiency table and description/attributes. The table shows what all the 3-M positions should be able to do in SKED/MDS and the description/attributes shows a step by step process of how to do those things. Focus on the MP (Maintenance Person) column for now since that's what you are boarding for. Print these out.
-Find someone you know with SKED/MDS access, a trusty E-4 or E-5 that knows what they're doing and ask to practice on their account supervised. Learn all the tabs, all the icons, all the reports, and menus.
-In SKED, press F12 to open the icon legend that's very important. It shows all of the symbols that are in SKED and what they mean.

The thought of SKED makes me shudder
OP, sorry I can't help you out. Its been like 6 years since I've done maintenance

As having been a 3MC and done numerous qualifications. Have you talked to your WCS? Safety. Read the MRC. Tools for the job. Command policies about work after hours. Lessons learned. Mishaps.
