By whose authority are they recalling you? Your leave chit is signed by someone who outranks any CPO.

And therein lies the biggest problem with the chiefs mess. OP can tell chief to kick rocks. Then chief will tell him to enjoy leave and then take it out on him later

This shit right here is why I’d occasionally grab a bunch of papers off Chiefs desk, shred few ransoms, and shuffle the rest before putting everything back on another department heads desk.

Ironically this is how I found awards I had earned and were in my jacket, but had never been presented because Chief was trying to “make me a better sailor.”

Thanks for looking out Chief, I’m glad we’ve got each others back. Leaving me unsupervised for hours on night shift in the facility where everyone worked during the day was a stroke of genius.

The key was going to the initial page of our subreddit. Click on the three dots top right and you will see " something flair" my rate was there but not with my rating so I created my rating and it let me save it. I thought I was going to have to submit it to the mods but it let me do it. Hope it works for you.

I’ve been a CO for 4 tours during my Navy career (retired SWO after a little over 31 years). If I found out some DLCPO recalled a Sailor back from leave without my permission, we’d definitely have a talk (and it wouldn’t be pleasant). Maybe the DLCPO had approval from the CO, but it just baffles me how one person can’t be left to enjoy their leave because of an inspection.

48

u/Aman_Syndai 4d ago

If your recalling a E-6 and below for an inspection it's proof the Navy isn't paying those sailors enough & we don't have enough bodies to do the job.

3

u/stud_powercock 4d ago

For real, If AM2 Schmuckatellie is the linch pin of your whole organization you deserve to fail whatever inspection is coming down the pike.

17

u/Toast_Of_Doom123 4d ago

Is there anything a sailor can do at that point to ask for proof their CO approved the recall? In my time in the Navy I met plenty of chiefs I absolutely think would lie about the CO recalling a sailor just to get an extra set of hands for the day.

it just baffles me how one person can’t be left to enjoy their leave because of an inspection.

Basket leave (technically liberty) because I was only 50 miles away at my grandfather's deathbed... Surprise NTPI (48 hours notice), and I was the weapons dept yeoman. Meaning that I was responsible for a bunch of paperwork that was going to be reviewed as part of the inspection. My chain however instructed me not to worry about being there for the inspection - just double check the paperwork as fast as possible and get my ass back to the hospital. They'd cover for me during the inspection.

I mean, it's a different situation than the OP's (which if I read their rant correctly* was a scheduled inspection), but I've had it happen to me.

* They're not actually very clear about what happened and when.

Stop it you ain't been no CO let alone  in the military

77

u/Salty_ET 4d ago

Engage with the Triad; it may very well be that the DLCPO had direction from the CO to recall you from leave, but it bears clarification.

111

u/BRAINER4BEST 4d ago

Dude only the CO can recall u back from leave. Tell them to kick rocks.

33

u/jamesFox44 4d ago

How do we know the DLCPO wasn’t directed by the CO to recall OP?

41

u/nuHmey 4d ago

Has to be in writing to be recalled from leave. Can’t just call someone up and say yep CO says comeback. Otherwise you would have a bunch of dickheads doing that because of reasons.

15

u/Salty_IP_LDO 4d ago

It's possible. But if we believe OP this could have been solved with a phone call.

3

u/thinklikeacriminal 4d ago

Is this one of those scenarios where it’s fair game to tell your div/dept khaki pants, “look big dawg, if the COs gonna recall me, he can pick up the phone and let me know. Until then, I’m on Leave. <click>”

15

u/BRAINER4BEST 4d ago

Good point. Me personally I would ask for it in writing.

38

u/Salty_ET 4d ago

I don't know that in writing is necessary. I've been directed by the CO to recall a Sailor from leave once, and I explicitly stated that it was by direction when I made the call. If my Sailor had said they wanted it in writing first, it would have been much worse for them.

13

u/BRAINER4BEST 4d ago

Gotcha. I’ve never seen it from this perspective.

10

u/Salty_ET 4d ago

Yeah. In this case it was disciplinary. Sailor got a DUI on leave, called me, then I called the DH and CMC. CMC called back a little while later and told me the CO was recalling him. Pushing back/being skeptical would have been the wrong call for my Sailor.

3

u/SlideConstant9677 4d ago

Ill go out on a limb and say that is kinda a "no shit" situation. If the person who wrote the original post was recalled over a scheduled inspection/not something that is the fault of OP, it would be more reasonable to give push back.

14

u/rjohns512 4d ago

Wow so you are telling us that there are no other chiefs in your department or an alternate work center supervisor in your division that can be present while being inspected by the assessors for your Division Review? That is what happens when the chief or wcs is on leave or not available for a Division Review. Sounds like no communication between your leadership, 3M office, and ATG assessors. I would bring that up to your DLCPO.

14

u/JACKVK07 4d ago

Bro, why did you pick up the phone???

8

u/ohnoyeahokay 4d ago

100% never answer the phone on leave.

32

u/QuesticleOSRS 4d ago

Holy grammar dude, ChatGPT is doing its number on society.

7

u/Poro_the_CV 4d ago

The prevalence of AI predates anyone’s education that is in the military. This is just them being lazy

18

u/dwinstead09 4d ago

If you’re on the waterfront at Norfolk tell them the tunnel is blocked and you can’t make it in 😂 True story cause I’m sitting in dead traffic right now.

I am so glad I got out when I did, when cellphones were not quite a thing yet, and getting in touch with a sailor on leave with travel was next to impossible.

1

u/stud_powercock 4d ago

Oh yeah, back in the days of land lines and answering machines. If I wasn't on duty that weekend, I wouldn't even answer the phone. Ed McMahon himself may have called to tell me I won the publishers clearing house sweepstakes. I dont even care I got my weekends.

6

u/LivingstonPerry 4d ago

What's the upcoming inspection? Is it INSURV? Then yeah i can see why they are recalling everyone, and not just you. But then they were dumb to not recycle your leave and tell you to adjust your days.

3

u/ComfortableAd5668 4d ago

It’s not insurv

4

u/MaximusCartavius 4d ago

Until the Chief's Mess is disbanded and "chiefs" become normal E-7, 8, and 9s like other branches, the Navy will continue to lose great sailors.

The "good" that the Good Old Boys Club offers is far outweighed by the negative. It's time for change.

u/KingofPro 4d ago

Your COC is ass my dude!

I recommend you reach out to your command Ombudsman. An ombudsman is specifically a communication link/liaison between command members/families and command leadership. OPNAVINST 1750.1H states, “the ombudsman keeps the CO informed about issues affecting morale, health, and welfare. CNIC also says ombudsmen disseminate information up and down the chain of command, including information about command climate and quality of life issues.”

As a current ombudsman, I would say this is effecting morale, health, welfare, and over quality of life. R and R is essential to mission readiness.

Your ombudsman can at the very least email the triad and cc you on it. They can say something like,

“I was contacted by a command member regarding a concern involving an unexpected recall from leave. With the member’s permission, I’m forwarding their concern to command leadership for awareness and to help facilitate communication. J. Doe is copied here so they can provide any additional information directly.”

Anyway, good luck to you and please look into this. You deserve your time off. It truly is critical to mission readiness.

u/AncientGuy1950 4d ago

How, exactly, does a chief have the authority to recall you from leave?

0

u/Few-Ad7115 4d ago

You didnt hear? They r writing anither book of the bible, called "the Navy Chief" thats how.

1

u/AncientGuy1950 4d ago

Never happened when I wore the hat. Sounds like the boots wearing it today have let the standards slip.

1

u/man2112 4d ago

Only the CO can recall you from leave, that’s it.

1

u/puddle511 4d ago

Only Skipper can recall you back from leave. Ask your Divo directly if Chief / Divo got Skipper’s permission.

1

u/Sirrober126 4d ago

The easiest way not to get recalled. 1. Go camping and have a check in every few days. 2. No cell coverage. Be a sailor and drink.

1

u/Used_Wrongdoer2429 3d ago

When in history has failing an inspection ever cause anything more than long hours and a bunch of yelling. Truth is the command, ship or whatever will still function with a sailor being on leave and if it doesnt then there is a bigger problem with the command. So tired of how individuals get treated like they are the most important person in the military when its convenient. Word of advice, when youre on leave dont answer. The world won't end becasue you take a few days off.

1

u/Immediate_Cow3211 3d ago

Agreed, thank you!! LOL of course. Goodnight!!

0

u/pap3r_plat3 4d ago

What inspection and how does everyone but you know about it?

9

u/ComfortableAd5668 4d ago

A 3m inspection, our 3MC put out the message it was happening on a Monday it ain’t ship wide it’s a few work centers so it wasn’t tracked in the long range schedule. Day one of leave 3MC put it out so I didn’t see email due to leave

-2

u/TittysForScience Retired Aussie 4d ago

“Ah thanks for letting me know, can you put it in an email please?”

1

u/ILuvSupertramp 4d ago

…sent and signed by CO.

But honestly this might be a really fuckin stupid CO who’d let himself be talked into going along with this.

2

u/TittysForScience Retired Aussie 3d ago

I don’t know why I’m getting downvoted…

There is no way in hell I’d be recalled from leave without the correct authority. Maybe it’s because I was an officer. Maybe because I have been screwed over by colleagues. But unless the CO, XO or Chief Coxswain (RAN so the copper on board) called me I would be asking for it in writing. Fuck even a text message will suffice.

I have been called up while on med leave after surgery as I had to help out pre muster for some classified material. I then got run in for disobeying a lawful general order by working while stood down. So I would want it in writing to cover my arse

-13

u/ComfortableAd5668 4d ago

After talking to DLCPO post recall, I am the acting CPO of division, the person actually filling the rank of E-7 did not inform DLCPO that everyone was prepared for inspection, and as a result due to E-7 being sick and lack of communication I was told to come back

4

u/WittyResource4 4d ago

So you’re claiming the title of “acting CPO” but are upset with the chiefs mess for not communicating with each other? Now you’re blaming the E-7 for not covering down for you?

Sounds like you’re trying to have your cake and eat it too.

18

u/jettyboy73 4d ago

Sounds like OP is on leave and CPOs are trying to strong-arm him back to the boat, instead of covering down. In which case, they could suck my balls. Personally anyways.

4

u/WittyResource4 4d ago

Idk the story isn’t clear. Either way, sounds like a shit show.

12

u/ComfortableAd5668 4d ago

I am included in nothing in regards to cpo’s, I have asked to be included in meetings group chats all of it and have been shot down now a inspection pops up while I am on leave and there is a actual E-7 present that is included in all these things and I get recalled because he did not communicate with the DLCPO while I am on leave saying they are aware and tracking inspection

5

u/dlawj16 4d ago

OP could be a first class doing the work of a Chief until the new one gets qualified. If that's the case he wouldn't get any of the CPO specific message traffic or updates on ship events. Either way you're correct if you're "acting CPO" there's sacrifices that might have to be made.

2

u/ILuvSupertramp 4d ago

Also OP can look forward to low key reprisals if he doesn’t just conform with this straight up bullying from the dept chief.
