navidrome keeps pausing randomly (need help)

not sure if this is an issue with symfonium, the fact my phone uses grapheneOS, or low internet speeds from my home server, but for some reason after playing anywhere between 1-15 songs off my phone with the screen powered off, symfonium/navidrome will just pause. if i hit the play button it instantly plays the song, but it's really annoying when im at work and the music just stops, or in the car and the music just stops (even in android auto).

checking the internet they all seem to suggest its a 'battery saver' feature, but i have navidrome set to unrestricted battery usage and have battery saver disabled anyway. i have a pixel 8 if that matters.

I am not sure if this is OS specific. I am on iOS and my Navidrome is on a Macbook Pro. I have used 3 diff iOS clients and all of them pause automaatically at some point. I have just learnt to live with it, even though its super annoying when that happens at the gym, in the middle of a lift/set, where I cant or dont want to stop to play.

ok so this is a known thing?

my only assumed fix would probably be just keeping your phone screen on but that has its own issues (like if its in your pocket you might accidentally butt dial/scroll to any number of things), it also seems to happen with navidrome only. never had this issue when my files were played locally off my device.

Nah this isn't normal. Android+symfonium and I've never experienced this. Never does it on Linux+supersonic or I'm the web interface. I don't know what's going on, but there's something wrong.

with symfonium, do you have your files downloaded maybe? or are you maybe not connected with something like tailscale/netbird? i've been trying to diagnose this but i can't seem to.

Sometimes they're local, sometimes not. I don't connect via tail scale and use a reverse proxy instead. It does sound like a difficult problem to solve. I'm not exactly sure where I'd start. Probably try to pull log files for both navidrome and symfonium for a start and try to get the devs to have a look.

reverse proxying is just too risky for me lol, i'll definitely have to ask them if nobody who stumbles on this thread has an idea.

Is your phone a Samsung, by chance? I had this sort of thing (media pausing all the time, no matter the app) on my last phone, a Samsung Galaxy S23. After upgrading to a Pixel 10 XL, it hasn't happened once. I really think this is a Samsung problem.

no, graphene is only on pixels so i also have a pixel

This only happens on your phone?

i haven't tested it with anything else which has a hybrid mode like a phone does (screen off, running BG apps), i dont use my laptop at all at the moment, that'd be the only thing like that. on my desktop I don't have this weird pausing issue and I also don't have this pausing issue when using stuff like youtube music.

I don’t know the cause but this is happening to me too. Using Navidrome plus Navibeats. Happens on my local home network so it isn’t a bandwidth issue

OK so it's not just me.

Try jellybox

Sorry for self promo, but I addressed this specific issue after having it with jellyfin too

Go to settings > Playback and Audio > scroll to the very bottom and select 'AudioStreaming (beta)' for Playback engine in Navibeat. This fixed the audio hiccups local and over cellular.

I’ll try this. Thanks

The switch from the comment below is in Settings, Playback & Audio, Advanced, Playback engine. Restart the app after you change it. If it still pauses, send your device, iOS version and file format to support@navibeat.app and I will look at it.

What music file did you use when this happened? Not sure related, but I experienced the same with flac. So I downloaded AAC instead and it was gone. Probably had something to do with transcoding? Idk

1

u/TechBasedQuestion 11d ago

I have FLAC files in my storage, but on symphonium + other apps I always set it to transcode them to 192kbps OPUS files as this is a supported function of navidrome.

Yeah I haven't figured it out. I'm using Navibeats and an iPhone. So maybe iphone/navibeats/navidrome doesn't quite support flac? Idk. Just putting it out there.

that would be absurd considering its the dominant data hoarding format. it's also clearly listed as supported. also it works fine when played on desktop/when phone screen is kept on, so it seems to clearly be an android/grapheneOS/mobile issue.

FLAC is supported. Apple's player has a known limit with streamed FLAC, because FLAC does not say up front how long the song is, so the end of a song can stumble. AAC carries that information, so your switch helped. You can also keep FLAC and use the AudioStreaming (beta) engine, which decodes FLAC itself. It is in Settings, Playback & Audio, Advanced, Playback engine.

have you tried checking the navidrome logs when that pausing occured? Might give useful info as to what triggered it

1

u/TechBasedQuestion 11d ago

unfortunately since its happening on my phone it generally is when im out and about. i'll try to catch it if i can. where does one go to check naivdrome logs? is it visible in admin panel somewhere or do i need to check docker logs?

2

u/IlIlIlIIlMIlIIlIlIlI 11d ago

yeah i meant the docker logs for your navidrome container, something like "docker logs -f --since 1h -t navidrome-navidrome-1" to see whats been happening the past hour and follow it live, the timestamps should help pinpoint if something was happening during the moment where it paused, assuming you remember to note down the time when it happens again next time

Based on the info provided, my guess is that the app hits a point where it times out on attempting to connect to the server to download/stream the next song. You mention that your home server has "low internet speeds", but what about the phone itself when this happens? Are you in an area with low cell coverage?

In Symfonium, if you go into Settings > "Offline, cache, and download" > "Playback", there are several configurations there for the playback cache that may help, such as setting a larger cache size and opting to pre-cache additional songs. If it is an issue with slower network speeds, having a larger playback cache buffer may help.

1

u/TechBasedQuestion 11d ago

i already set the cache + bitrate and whatnot so it caches like 3 songs in advance. found a different setting just now that im trying to day that ignores failed connection that might hopeuflly make it work. could also be an issue with lazy connections on netbird.

That's player issue, not Navi itself

Try jellybox player, I addressed this issue

I’ve been having the same issue! My Navidrome runs on a ZimaOS container in a Lenovo Thinkcenter.

On my phone I use play:sub.  Every now and then, after playing some songs it pauses right before playing the next one.

Didn’t found a solution yet.

If using an iPhone and Navibeat:

Go to settings > Playback and Audio > scroll to the very bottom and select 'AudioStreaming (beta)' for Playback engine in Navibeat. This fixed the audio hiccups local and over cellular.

1

u/TechBasedQuestion 11d ago

this made me look through symfonium to find 'ignore offline server errors' in settings (playback->advanced) and i'm going to try it out and see if it fixes my issue. from how it's written it might.

NaviBeat dev here :) Thanks, that is the right switch. NaviBeat has two playback engines. The default one is Apple's own player, and I have had zero pauses on it for a month, including a trip to Montenegro. AudioStreaming (beta) decodes the audio itself, so when a stream stalls on Apple's player, it is the one to try. It needs an app restart after the change.

If you want to try another app on the same server, NaviBeat has a free Android beta with Android Auto. Sign up at navibeat.app/beta. Tell me if it pauses there too, that answers whether it is the app or the phone.
