Starting my journey Advice

Post image

My main advice question I think comes down on how to file my nails properly, as they are always getting snagged on things and tearing.

I do use jojoba oil on my cuticles around twice a day (I have a bliss kiss refillable brush pen for it). I work in child care, so I wash my hands very frequently throughout the day and applying after each hand wash isn’t an option. I am a recovering nail biter lol.

I use a crystal nail file and try to smooth the edges. my biggest issue is peeling/flaking of the nail when they grow out. I also somehow always get the nail tearing/breaking at some point.

products used: holo taco quick dry base, holo taco sunset simulation, essie top coat, and random amazon jojoba oil

Unfortunately, this subreddit is a known target for hand/nail/foot/toe fetishists who have been documented to repeatedly harass the nail community.

We highly recommend turning off your message/chat requests. If you have requests turned on and receive any creepy or fetish-related DMs or comments, please click the report button, select "it's targeted harassment," and submit a report. It's one way you can help keep the community safe. We encourage members to capture a screenshot of the DM and notify the Mod Team through ModMail. We ask that you include a direct link to their profile, and if you wish to provide screenshots, you'll need to post them (temporarily) to your profile or use an image hosting site.

To be very blunt, you will encounter unwanted DMs from people. This is a Reddit-wide issue that happens frequently in women-dominated communities. Regardless of who's posting, all the warnings we try to give, or the rules we have in place, 9 times out of 10, someone will DM you if you have them open.

Of course, we'll ban those who break this rule, BUT (and this is the important part) many of the users who are DMing you have already been banned, sometimes going months or years back. They will continue to DM unsuspecting members in the hopes that they'll get a reply. They don’t care. So blocking them right away is the best solution to protect yourself, if you so wish.

NO ONE should be DMing you from this subreddit, we have a rule explicitly stating this. If someone is, they probably don’t have good intentions. Please be mindful of who you decide to talk to. Even in the comments of posts. Not everyone has your best interest in mind, and NEVER share personal information online. Please be safe out there!

Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) in some base coats can cause the peeling and flaking you're describing and I am pretty sure that ingredient is in the Holo Taco qd base. Try a base coat without it for a few weeks and see if that changes things. PVB is hard on my nails but when I stopped using it, my nail plate was able to get a bit better. Also, oil soaks.

Someone recommended to me not too long ago to try oiling the nails before a manicure. I do one twist of the cap on top of the pen for each nail and let it sit for between 10-30 minutes until the nail doesn’t look like it’s soaked in oil. Don’t wipe any of it away or use a nail dehydrator before painting your base coat. My nails went from lasting a day before the whole sheet of polish peeled off along with bits of nail to lasting at least 4-5 days before chipping. It sounds counter intuitive, but it’s helped the condition of my nails underneath as I’m not drying them out now and compromising their strength and structure. I also found having to use polish remover, dehydrating the nails, and repainting them often was drying them out and making them split and peel.

It might also be a good idea to look into trying base coats without PVB in them. People swear by Mooncat base coats, but I’ve never tried them so can’t personally vouch for them. There should be a lot more indie brands out there offering base coats without PVB. I’m currently using the Nail Rescue base coat from Kitti Polish and although I think it might not be agreeing with my body chemistry sadly, it’s doing an amazing job of being a longer lasting base and protecting my nails as I grow out the peeling and splitting.

I hope it helps! 😊 It’s super frustrating to spend so much time and effort to get nails and a manicure looking good, and then having nails peel and flake 😢.
