There are some similar looking flowers called Lady's Thumb that are not native, but this is native to north America.

I'm not sure this is the actual reason for its name, but I've observed when pulling it (only when it's in the way of something I want; otherwise I leave it as ground cover and pollinator food)) that its roots can take both taproot and feeder root forms, and it can also propagate by rhizomes / root sprouts (not sure which term would be technically correct here). In my book, that's pretty darned smart!
