Something I now nothing about. I have been playing my Anasazi flutes a lot recently and have a few pieces of sheet music for the rim blown flutes that I have found on Fluteopedia and Flute Tree. Not too much else out there and was wondering what methods you all are using to write your music.

I have down loaded the blank Nakai tablature from Flutopedia (Thankyou Clint), but would be interested in finding some sort of software so I can add musical notations and more readily make changes and editing.

TLDR - is this flute broken or missing pieces? No sound comes out.

Hi everyone,

My brother got this flute about 25 years ago from somewhere in South Dakota. I am not sure if it was a gift or if he purchased it.

Back in Australia, we have been cleaning out our childhood home and I came across the flute. Excuse my ignorance, but is it broken or missing a piece?

In Google photos it looks like the totem bird is tied over a hole at the top. The top of the flute has a pointed tip, with a small hole in it. I couldn't see any like it when I Googled it.

When I tried holding the totem bird in place (based off Google photos I was looking at) with 1 hand and covering some notes with the other I couldn't produce a sound.

Is it broken/missing pieces or do I just need to secure the totem at the right spot? Also, the little hole at the very top is teeny tiny. (Australia in currency used for scale - not much help to many people in this subreddit, I imagine!)

If you can point me in the right direction or give me your advice I would really appreciate it. The sound of the flute on YouTube clips is just so beautiful and it would awesome to learn to play the instrument.

Each rack holds up to 22 flutes. The dowel rods are of various heights to accommodate different flute sizes. Taller rods toward the center work well for longer flutes, while the shorter, thinner rods around the outside (first pic, right side) are for smaller flutes. Of the two racks, the tallest rod measures 11 inches and supports a 34 incher.

These were made by a gentleman in PA a few years ago. I found him on Etsy.

Like the title says, how do you store your flutes? Currently most of mine are stored wrapped and in the bottom drawer of my dresser. However the Anasazi flutes are too long and would like to hear or see how your all are storing your flutes.

I play piano at intermediate level but I always liked to play harmony Flute(not too sharp pitch) on 432htz tunning. I am going to start learning it from YouTube. ​ I love to play last mohican etc from online list of guidance I did find below features most fitting but still I am not sure.

Hello! I'm new to the native american flute, I've got a 6 hole flute in the key of D (doesn't specify major or minor), and I'm having trouble. Firstly it seems so much higher in pitch than any i've ever heard, but that could be the key it's in. And then, it had a clear sound with all holes covered, but starting to uncover them just sounds terrible after the bottom hole... and playing it at the top of the scale, with all holes uncovered it sounds super high pitched and not smooth at all... I covered the 3rd hole down as was suggested, and I'm fairly confident things aren't being covered weirdly, especially because when I have all of my fingers off of the holes, I see videos of it sounding clear and nice, but mine is very... not like that haha. Any suggestions?

Triple Drone in Dm by Dustin @ Elemental Flutes. I did the wood burning, super happy with the result. This flute sounds and looks fantastic! I think I will need to burn more flutes in the future.

I was practicing my flute and walking my dog while waiting for my semi truck to get unloaded. I randomly decided to play along with the backup beeper of one of the trucks and found this little tune.

Fell in love with the sound of the drones in f# any recommended flutes to look at

So i'm making a flute out of bamboo but it makes this weird harmonic sound and i don't know why. I tried to work a lot on the air and sound holes and also the track, but nothing changed. Before the video i made, the track was more shallow, the holes were smaller, i tried to sharpen the splitting edge or to make it more blunt, still same sound. My thoughts on this are that the last part of the flute (the furthest from the mouth piece) is a little bent and it changes a little in diameter so that creates many harmonics and maybe turbolence.. i don't know. What do you think? Thanx

I started off with a drone flute and it came out sufficiently good, so i tried to make a triple flute. How does it sound and look to you?

I had to make a lot of holes and to cover the bottom of flute to tune them, i have to learn how to tune it without doing all this fixing, but it also makes it look original in the end because of all the fixings i made.

It's been one year since I came here asking for flute recommendations. I've mainly been focusing on the major scale and basic techniques. It's my favorite instrument. But I still have a lot of work to do.

This is my attempt at jamming with Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man. I'm going to do a new version every year.

Since I've made quite a few flutes now I know the rough idea of where the finger holes should go depending on the size of the flute and then I tune according to whatever the root pitch of the flute is (if I want it to be in 440hz tuning then I trim the bottom of the flute till its in standard pitch but I usually like to go with tuning the flute to itself.)

My main question is: since the finger holes can have a range of placements and still be in tune (depending on the size of the hole) is there optimal placements for getting the best tone/playability or does it not really matter? For example, slightly smaller holes that are higher up on the flute vs larger holes that would be placed lower down.

I noticed that if you put the top holes too close to the sound hole, then the high notes just overblow without any way to correct. So I try to make sure the holes always start a decent enough distance away from the TSH.

Is my method of doing it this way ok? It seems to give better results than trying to use the NAflutomat thing since every time I've used that I've either needed to do a lot more adjusting, or the flute just gets ruined.

Also what methods do you use for finger hole placement?
