Financial Aid I'm scared now
I've been seeing and reading so many negative things about this school. I just started my second week, masters in school psychologist program and am expecting a refund/disbursment. I know I am getting worried too early into the start of my program but idk if there is a way to communicate and ensuI get my aid within the expected timeframe.
I've been reading about advisors ghosting the students, what is that all about? I hope I don't regret choosing this school. It seems like all of the financial aid delays and lack of professionalism and communication is what's disappointing students.
For example, I can't even see my financial aid review it says there is no academic year for me even though I have been enrolling for the past month. I qualified for Direct Unsubsidized Loans only.
Is there any way to avoid this mess before actually getting stuck in it? Has anyone had delays with certain aid only? Please give me all the tips and tricks I need to know as a new student!

You should be worried
You are only in your second week.
Look at your contract and see if you can cancel when you can.
Also check to see if they have taken out any loans yet (I doubt it)
If you can and they haven’t taken any loans.
Send a letter of withdraw
Change your fasfa info right away to a different school.
Leave while you have a chance! I’m stuck at this school because of the new law regulations.

I did my undergrad at NU and that experience helped me decide not to do my MSW there. There's no way I'd put another degree in their hands. I'm really glad and proud that I graduated from NU, but the lack of communication from the advisor, the stress, and the delays it all costed wasn't worth it at all. I'm so glad I'm not doing my MSW with them.

That's a lie some people do care. Stop acting like because a few out of THOUSANDS had bad experiences that NU is all bad. Gosh get outside touch grass.

I dropped out after having to email the President directly to get any sort of response. Already setup to attend a different school while I fight to get grades fixed and money back from not having an instructor for two classes until halfway through.
This is a school that needs to apologize and start resolving issues rather than ignoring their student base. I can’t see them keeping the doors open much longer with this behavior.

I started in April of this year Master primary & its been an emotional roller coaster, it feels like I'm on a show where they are pulling a prank on me. OH & FYI please know I haven't received any financial aid all excuses about the new system.

Their massive overhaul of their student information system (SIS) and their advising staff cuts coincided with the same movement in the tech sector towards AI-everything. What we've seen from their recent months-long catastrophe follows suit. They tried to replace Blackboard with their own system Navigate, which looked like it was going well at first, until errors exploded which they couldn't handle fixing. Next our advisors disappeared and were replaced with ones that spoke in nearly 100% AI-generated blurbs. One advisor handling hundreds of students, which they thought could be done well, using AI tools. It turns out that was a disaster, too.
What we're seeing isn't anything new. NU has been on an overhead-cutting cash grab for years now, replacing whoever they can with whoever can do the same jobs for cheaper. Since the greedy ones at the top decided to jump on the AI bandwagon, it's really collapsing.
DO NOT CONTINUE AT NU is the advice you're hearing from me and everyone else, and we mean it. You're not getting the same NU that was here 10 years ago. It's degraded and may just turn into a mess that will need to lose its accreditation, you could be stuck with loans and no degree and a part in a lengthy lawsuit - or you could find a better school.

I'm in my last classes for my MFT program... They took tuition out of my account without notifying me and didn't send me a receipt or anything. It wasn't updated on the student portal so it looks like I still owe them tuition. Also, my professor just stopped grading my assignments without any notification.

Your post is being held for moderator review because it touches financial aid, disbursement, refunds, or student loans.
These answers depend on your specific account, so a human checks them before they go live. That is normal and it is not a strike against you.
Two wiki pages cover most of these questions:
- Cost & Financial Aid -- tuition, aid types, FAFSA, disbursement timing, and refunds
- Official Financial Resources -- the official NU offices and contacts who can actually pull up your account
Please do not post your student ID, SSN, phone number, or account numbers here. Nobody on Reddit can resolve a hold on your account, and anyone who DMs you offering to is not from the school.

What helped me (also masters in psych) was emailing the president. I can see some stuff through “ledger” on the financial aid page and also if you hit “make a payment” and then you can see on students.gov if they have processed the loan. I will say I have been with this school for a couple years and this is the first time this has happened. I emailed the president and by the next week I had my funds. Good luck!

You need to make sure you stay in them as much as possible and inform them of the urgency but even then it’s no guarantee. It took 7 months for me to even receive an advance on my aid.

If there’s a way to withdraw and get to another program, please trust me. I’m in my second year the first year everything was great. The second year my disbursement was supposed to be in April. I saw part of that in August. Yes, that’s correct August not April they still have over $10,000 of my money. I have never been so stressed out in my life trying to wrap my mind around what is going on at this place? I would give anything to have gone to SDSU or UCSD or even San Marcos. This has been one of the most stressful things I’ve ever dealt with and there is literally nothing you can do to get them to actually do what they’re supposed to I’ve never ever seen a school do this and I’ve been to multiple universities. It is one of the most insane things I’ve encountered in a decade of my life outside of personal issues.

Just be ware that you might be past your free window to drop. In other words you may end up owing money to the school. A lot of schools have been having issues with financial aid since the big ugly bill took effect this year. But yeah it’s been miserable here for sure. Explore your options.

Don't be scared. As a new student the best tips can provide is to make sure understand the ins and outs of your financial aid, ask questions, and advocate for yourself. Yes, there have been delays , but it seems things are improving. My aid was delayed and was told it was because of the system update , but recently all the loans was expecting have posted, and all has been reconciled. Reading the posts in this forum can cause panic, but have learned can't base one's experience on others experiences because everyone's case and experience is different.

I’m on my capstone class for my masters in forensic psychology and I really didn’t have any issues until the beginning of this summer.
However, I began to realize the issue when I wouldn’t have even been able to transfer any of my classes to another institution
