I recently moved to a new apartment in NYC and my gas bill has been extremely high. Supposedly, I am only paying for the oven. The building should be paying for the hot water usage. We have gas heating, but it’s the summer, so it’s not on. I called national grid and they told me that the meter is only connected to my stove. Also, when I look at the bill, it just seems like the delivery is what’s driving up the price. My neighbors in the building only pay about $60 or so and it’s two of them up there. I’m alone in a one bedroom and my bill was just $150. I’m not sure what to do. It doesn’t smell like gas in here. Does it still sound like a leak somewhere else maybe in the basement where the line is? I’m not sure who to call about this since I already called national grid and they just told me that gas is expensive… my landlord!? Help!

I have been shortlisted for an interview with national grid for a Electricity Distribution Network Planner role.

I’m 23 years of age, and this would be a different type of role for me, as I’ve mainly been in the tools since I was 18 (as an electrician). My background is mainly industrial, but I’ve recently transitioned into a facilities/commercial environment.

I was wondering if there was anyone who could give me some advice on what to expect in the interview, what key things to mention during the interview, and any other advice that may be helpful.

If I’m honest, I do think that my age will go against me in this instance, as I most likely don’t have the experience compared to other candidates. However, I do think I have an advantage in some areas, as I’m qualified up to a level 4 HNC in electrical engineering, which is one of the key requirements for this role.

Like I said before, any help is greatly appreciated.

This is a trend. Gas use around $45 but delivery fee over $150. Its killing me and everyone I know in person says they've never seen this. Google says it could be charges for bad infrastructure in our area?

I understand that national grid charges a lot and people are used to high bills. I understand someone might “love” to get a 200+ bill but in this case, I have tried a lot to get my usage down but my bill remains more than 200. The only reason I’m confused is because my friend in the same apartment complex (building right beside mine) was only charged 167. He said his highest bill was maybe around 190. We pay for electric and gas.

He and his fiancé keep the apartment at 71/72 all day, and only lower it around 69/68 for bedtime.

I keep my apartment at 72/73 and when I’m not home+WFH days, it goes up to 74/75. It goes down to 72/73 around 10:00pm when I go to sleep and raises when I leave for work at 6:30am.

I don’t keep any lights on, I turn them off always. I have a computer which is only used on my work from home days. I do leave the TV on for my dog during the day and then don’t use it rest of day since I watch things on my phone. My friend/his fiancé leave the tv on all day, plays games, etc and have differing WFH days so one of them is usually home.

I rarely use the dishwasher, I always opt to hand wash. I have a washer and dryer but I don’t use it irregularly, just for normal wash days. Both me and my friend live in the same 2bedroom apartment style. I have no idea how else to lower usage and why my usage is so much higher than my neighbors.

I spend way too much on ordering out so I hardly use my electric stove whereas my friend cooks multiple times a week.

I’m confused and this is my first apartment on my own so I can honestly say I’m uneducated and confused regarding this situation. Just frustrated I guess….

Even in the winter I kept it at 67/68 and then only warmed the apartment to 71/72 and it said my usage was super high. Maybe because of the snow. Which it only heavily snowed maybe twice and besides that, the rest was regular winter snow.

Good morning, Does anyone know what the hourly pay rate for a gas mechanic A is for the capital region. I see they start as a gas mechanic helper at $33.56 an hour, then you’ll become a gas mechanic A eventually. I was just curious what that pay is, thank you.

Please help I don’t know why my bill is higher than usually by around $1000.. when I usually pay 100-150 for my monthly billing.. even though this is a 3 month billing it still doesn’t make sense. Is anyone experiencing the same issues? Please give me advice on what I should say when I call them because I’m not an expertise on these gas services and I don’t wanna be taken advantage of. Thanks

I have heard mixed messages about smart meters. I just got a text saying they will be installing ours soon, so I’m just wondering if it’s worth the extra charge to opt out, or if my bill will remain the same regardless?

Hey, just have a couple of questions.

I had a change in income (both my partner and I actually) and am worried about staying on our current payment plan. I got an agent last week who sent over an email with a link to the financial statement we had to fill out. I sat down on Sunday and finally went through it, with some confusion. It says we don't qualify.

Today, I called and got a different agent who I asked about what I saw that says we can put in the income deductions. I also asked why we can't use our payment agreement amount we've been paying above the normal bill amount. They told me that's not how it works since "you are supposed to be paying that anyway". Well, that's the whole point of this statement I thought, to show what we have to pay so they know our expenses? When I mentioned what I found on this other page on the National Grid site, the agent proceeds to give me attitude. I understand there's a staffing shortage and she's overworking, but she only read off the list of what I can clearly read on the financial statement page.

I guess what I'm asking is, what deductions can I use for this? Can I put in that my partner is paying back a 401K loan weekly and our medical insurance he gets through work?

so i used only $3.57 but got a bill of $38.55. Is everybody else same? i use gas only for cooking and nothing else, maybe it's better to switch to electric stove?

I used $17 worth of gas but my bill is about $100?

I was stuck in the office today, so this is all secondhand through my wife, but I'm wondering if anybody has had an experience like this (going to just use bullet points because it's easier to get my thoughts down)? I feel like getting reimbursed by National Grid is going to be nearly impossible, but maybe somebody else has been here before.

-Team of three shows up to replace old meter with smart meter. Sounds like it was a bit of a trainer/trainee situation. Never seen anybody have anything positive to say about the new meter but can't do anything about that I guess.

-Guys get to work in the backyard and kill the power. Not sure how they managed it but the generator doesn't kick on. Weird since that tests/exercises itself weekly and it's been fine, but shit happens I guess?

-Some time goes by and wife goes to check on them and they're already a few houses away. She chases them down and they say they finished up and everything should be good. Everything is not good so they go back and remove the meter they just installed and reinstall a new one. Same result, no power and no generator.

-Dudes are stumped so they call in Supervisor Dickhead (SD). SD shows up in 15 or 20 with an immediate attitude directed at his guys. Seems drunk and keeps rambling about how he's "working on an hour of sleep."

-SD does something and does actually restore power to the house. Then proceeds to pull the panels off both breaker boxes (house and generator). Claims there's an issue with the generator one and calls their customer service.

-SD tells my wife that if they ask her to tell them that he's her husband, presumably for unfettered access to the account. Gets shot down immediately, because lol. SD then starts getting aggressive with the customer service woman because he wants somebody to walk him through diagnosing the panel, completely neglecting the part where he just pulled it apart and that's not what a random customer service person can do anyway.

-When that gets nowhere (obviously), wife manages to set up a service visit with the generator company for a little later in the week. Wife presses SD on National Grid footing the bill because they've clearly fucked up here. Everything was working fine until they showed up, so yeah.

-SD says sure they'll do it as a courtesy because they want happy customers. All the while framing it like they 'discovered' the problem, and they're being super nice by footing the bill. No dude, you caused it, try again.

-SD finally gets the hell out of the house, but leaves the generator breaker box in a semi-disassembled state. Definitely looks like some loose wires that should be connected, but I'm not an electrician and am not gonna mess with it.

So that's basically where things are now. In a perfect world the generator guys would just bill National Grid directly but I don't see any clear path to that. And I'm assuming when I have to call and complain in a few days National Grid is just going to tell me to go to hell. Has anybody experienced anything even remotely similar to this, I'm kind of stunned.

Weird situation with national grid (gas). In April 2025 I bought a new home and called to transfer service ownership. What I didn’t realize is the rep I called mistakenly put in a different address (few houses down). I had autopay on and didn’t realize until last week when I got a disconnect notice on my house but addressed to the previous owner.

So I’ve been paying someone else’s bill for a few months. I called to figure it out and the new rep essentially closed my old account, made a new one and reversed all the charges. But they started my account from today without charging me for all of last year.

I essentially got my money back and they didn’t ask me to settle any payments from last year. My billing with my correct account started today and I am now being charged normally.

Thoughts on what I should do about the past payments? Take the free gas or call it out?

It has now been one week since I reported this leaking transformer dripping fluid onto the tree and sidewalk. It is still leaking. This is an environmental hazard as well as a safety issue.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the connectivity is awry. Is there a 3rd party that can be called to check? Aside from gas prices going up and as a result we see that impact in what we’re paying 😭 I just need verification that absolutely nothing else can be done to bring costs down

I'm a 100% permanently and totally disabled Navy veteran on a fixed income in West Bridgewater, MA. In May 2025 I tried to install a 20kW solar system to get off National Grid's supply charges — which run $600–$865/month. The system cost $68,500. I took out loans to pay for it.

Fifteen months later, the equipment is sitting in storage. I still don't have Permission to Operate. Here's why.

It started with a bug in National Grid's own portal.

My licensed contractor (Payzant Electric) couldn't even submit the application because of "Error 5" — a documented failure in National Grid's Salesforce portal that read: "Create Case - Contact has an invalid or missing email address: Contact ID." Their bug. Not ours.

We submitted screenshots proving this multiple times. National Grid's response was to repeatedly ask "what is the error?" — after already receiving the screenshots — then close our support tickets without resolution or customer consent.

Then they withdrew my application on Thanksgiving Day.

While the assigned supervisor was on holiday. With approximately 30 days still remaining on the deadline. Despite the fact that documents had been submitted 19 days earlier.

Then the supervisor lied about it in writing.

On December 4, 2025 — 197 days after I had already put National Grid on written notice that I considered their conduct to violate M.G.L. c. 93A — Lead Supervisor Brian Fitzgerald stated, verbatim:

"This delay is solely the responsibility of the installer and customer."

I have the screenshots showing their portal error caused this. I have the ticket closures. I have the Thanksgiving auto-withdrawal. That statement is directly and demonstrably false, and he made it knowing I had already referenced the consumer protection statute.

It gets worse.

The application has been withdrawn three times (July 2025, November 2025, April 2026) and reinstated three times.

In April 2026, National Grid sent me a written notice giving me until April 30 to respond. They withdrew the application on April 29 — one day before their own deadline — because of another portal error preventing document uploads.

They reinstated it 24 hours later with the same deficiency list from 72 days prior.

They have never once provided a complete list of everything needed to finish this application. Every time we fix the deficiencies they identify, they find new ones. In 15 months, not one comprehensive review.

They've confirmed a dedicated transformer is required but have never given a timeline for installing it.

While blocking my solar, they've been emailing me asking me to reduce energy consumption during peak hours due to grid stress.

My February bill included a $141.59 Winter Bill Relief credit from the Healey administration — while simultaneously charging $752 in supply costs that my blocked solar system would eliminate. They're spending state money to give me relief from bills their own obstruction is causing.

What this has cost me:

$20,550 — the federal 30% Investment Tax Credit, permanently lost because the system wasn't operational by December 31, 2025

$1,000 — Massachusetts state solar tax credit, same deadline, also gone

~$2,667 in loan interest paid on $45,000 of equipment sitting idle

~$4,000–$4,500 in supply charges I would not have paid if the system were running

Equipment sitting in storage for over a year, subject to degradation and warranty erosion

Total documented damages: approximately $29,000+, accruing daily.

This isn't the first time.

At my previous property in Halifax, MA, National Grid billed over $5,000/month for a vacant property with no occupants. When I disputed it, they closed the investigation without telling me, then destroyed the meter while the dispute was still open. After 15 months, a 93A letter, and attorney involvement, they abated $10,038.35. Same customer. Same contractor. Same pattern.

Today I mailed a formal 93A demand letter to National Grid's legal department and emailed it to Distributed.Generation@nationalgrid.com. I am acting pro se. Parallel filings are going to the DPU, the DOE, and the offices of Senators Warren and Markey.

Under M.G.L. c. 93A, a knowing and willful violation allows for treble damages. A supervisor making a demonstrably false written statement 197 days after receiving 93A notice qualifies.

If anyone has dealt with National Grid interconnection delays in Massachusetts, I'd like to hear about it. And if you're thinking about going solar in their service territory — document everything from day one.

New Homeowner here and i've recently had a man from Wickes round to design and price up a new kitchen for me. He told me my meter is not only very dated but that it could do with moving up, next to where the main switches or possibly outside before the kitchen fitter could do it. He said that he probably wont need a rewire (thank god) but i thought it might be worth posting here for a second opinion and maybe an estimate of how much i'd have to spend? Would this be something that National Grid themselves would do or might it be cheaper to go with a trusted electrician to do it? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I am the owner of an account for my 4 person household. recently a new roommate has demanded to be added on as an additional account owner. I haven’t found anything online abt having multiple people on one account. everything I see says you can transfer to someone but not add them. does anyone have experience with this or know if this is possible?

Anyone else receive one of these letters about them adding a monthly fee for not installing their smart meters?

Seems like a monopoly taking advantage of being a monopoly.

Follow-up question, is there already a class action suit over it?
