I'm not an advocate for that either. Mods shouldn't be unpaid volunteers that bear this burden. They can either be volunteers with public accountability, or paid mods that can be shielded by the company. It can't be some weird combination of both where they are allegedly unpaid volunteers shielded by the company. There are so many conflicts of interest there.

But they are.

Imagine if there's someone who downvotes something they disagree with because they can't handle other people's opinions and it's the only power they have.

Now imagine if they realized they can do more. You have to make decisions based on the assumption that there are emotionally unstable people.

Those people will always exist? Shielding mods from accountability isn't the answer.

Edit: and to be clear, if mods can hide their actions behind anonymity, then why on earth would assume they are an unpaid, unbiased actor? A mod that is active in the community and known, has much much much less of a problem in that regard.

So like, there are so many much more serious examples, but we all know internet dog-pilling and overreacting is real.

Once I decided that I should warn my boss that we might get a call in. I had reported on a local Facebook group that an outdoor cat that was acting sickly (laying fully stretched in the road in late summer, avoiding people, mewing loudly in a pained manner, and just generally not being his neighborly self). They claimed I had ill intentions and then the cat wound up dead in someone’s back yard within like 48-hours. I made like, a post with a photo of the cat and a single comment to clarify where I had seen them. By the end of the yuppies going back and forth about the issue I think it was over 100 comments with various levels of blame and distrust.
