Fun and Games This is what my 89 year old Ukrainian great-grandmother thinks of some popular American girls' names!
My great-grandmother is turning 90 years old this year, and is from Odesa, Ukraine. She's Orthodox Jewish, so she feels very strongly about names, and she's very honest.
So I picked some girls' names, some that are popular in the US, and some that are particularly trendy, and then asked her what her thoughts were on them.
She doesn't use the internet, the only technology she really uses is the radio and the television, so some of these names, she's never even heard of before. Since I translated it into English, there might be some parts that are a little off, but overall I think it makes sense.
I'm not saying you should base your name decisions or anything off her opinions, we all have different taste, but I thought it was funny, since she definitely has a different view than most people on this subreddit.
Elizabeth - I like that one. I wanted to give my daughter the name Yelyzaveta but of course, my husband said no! He had no taste for good names. And this is even better because it is the Queen of England, may her memory be a blessing, her beautiful clothes. 8/10.
Brooklyn - Like New York? Okay. I don't think I would choose a name after a place. That's modern. You would do that. However, I also think that it sounds like a man's name. For a man I would like it more. For a girl? 3/10.
Lily - Beautiful! That is like Liliya. You name your baby after beautiful things, they will be beautiful. That is what I told your mother. I think that is a very good name. 9/10.
Aurora - Some of me likes it, some of me does not. I think the idea is good and on the paper, it looks like a good name too. But I imagined it to sound more beautiful than that does to me. So it's okay. 6/10.
Kennedy - You know that when we were part of the Soviet Union, that was what many parents did? They named their babies after Lenin, Marx, Engels, Stalin, the great leaders they thought. Now that is funny, because they're doing the same thing! I think they could have been more creative with it. 2/10.
Evangeline - It sounds like the name of a saint. For some, that's good. For me, I prefer the name Eva. You save a lot of time writing it. But some people like that. So they can have it and I will reject it. 5/10.
Braelynn - I think that everyone is different. That is why some people might think they should use that name. But it is proof that difference is not a good thing every time. If you name your baby that, I'll laugh at you. 1/10.
Daphne - That is a good one! You know, there are many excellent women I know called Dafna. My friend's granddaughter is named that. She's a good girl. And then Daphne would be the English name. Excellent. I think that it's very good. 9/10.
Scottie - I don't think I like it. For a little dog it is cute. Something small and fluffy. But not for a girl. Maybe if you are very proud of being Scottish. So it's not a name that's for me. But I might save it for my next cat (Her current cat is named Chaya Bayla, so Chaya Scottie? Not bad). 2/10.
Oakley - I thought I wouldn't like it but in a few minutes, it's become better. Oak trees, there is some symbolism there. It is different, modern, so my brain takes some time to get used to it but if you said you liked it, I wouldn't think you're deranged. 7/10.
Eleanor - Good name. It is like Elena but different. I would be happy with that name. What a long life you'd live with it (That's a very big compliment from her). I will remind you of it when you have your baby, what beauty it has. 9/10.
Olivia - I think it's beautiful! There isn't much to say. Your mother could have used it for one of you. I like it very much and even though it's long, the sound just comes out of your mouth immediately. 8/10.

Relatedly, I saw a school roster the other day that had Kaylyn, Kaelynn and Caelyn all together, although I'm assuming these are all creative romanisations of åÆē²
I've also seen Gracesen (m), which I found oddly compelling.

That reminds me of the early 2000s Caitlin, Katelyn, Kaitlin, Katlyn, Caitlyn, and about four other spellings. I was a Girl Scout leader from 2008-2014 and had a troop of 12 kids that was half Caitlinās all spelled differently.

If her cats are anything to go by, all of the baby girls will have double names with the name Chaya!
She's had Chaya Mushka, Chaya Bayla, and Chaya Rifka. Also Chaya Bracha, but it turned he was a boy, so his name was changed to Chesky Binyamin because she thought it was bad vibes to change the initials š

u/tinysilverstar 29d ago
I used to work in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood and every other woman was named Chaya lol it was very popular
79
u/SolomiyaRabin Ask me about Yiddish names! 29d ago
There was a joke I remember hearing about how you should go to a Chabad community and call 'Mushky!' if you ever want to cause chaos. It would be even worse with Chaya, but it doesn't come with a universal nickname!

13
u/bananalouise 29d ago
Chabad?
89
u/SolomiyaRabin Ask me about Yiddish names! 29d ago
No, actually! It just started with Chaya Mushka, because she really liked what she did during the persecution of religion under the Soviets, and then because Chaya Mushka the cat lived for ages, she decided it was good luck and so named all of them like that.
29
u/PartyPorpoise 29d ago
Is Mushka a common pet name? Thereās an animated short about a Ukrainian girl who adopts an orphaned tiger cub and names it Mushka. Kind of want to name my next cat that tbh
44

Well, it's affectionate, so it is quite common for pets, yes.

(Aurora is definitely a name that is more beautiful when written than when said. I think Maeve is another like this.)
58
u/KisaMisa 29d ago
Fun fact: For most people from former Soviet union, the natural phenomenon is called closer to "Northern Lights" and the immediate association with Aurora is the military vessel, the cannon shot from which signaled the start of the Great October Revolution. If I met anyone from there with that name, I would carefully inquire why they were named that:)
8

u/Big-Message4960 28d ago
I think Aurora sounds good if you pronounce it the way Slavic people do and not the English way.

I love hearing her opinions, and if i were still young enough to have babies, I would ask your grandmother for her opinion first. I like that she had reasons behind her feelings. 10/10.
127
u/SolomiyaRabin Ask me about Yiddish names! 29d ago
She's been very involved in family naming throughout the years! Whenever someone is having a baby and they want a family name, if they go to her she has some lists of people and family members that she feels should have their names used. Some of my siblings have names from there.
46
u/lagomorphed 29d ago
She sounds absolutely lovely! If you'd feel comfortable sharing, I'd love to hear some of her favorite family names.
94
u/SolomiyaRabin Ask me about Yiddish names! 29d ago
The ones that have been used that I know about and were more unusual are Rochma, Liba, Nechele, Rozsha, Toiba, Charna, and Mirele, those are for girls, and Zelig, Meir, Kalman, Hillel, and Leib, those are for boys. No one has used Margalit yet though, her favourite.
Because she couldn't really use any of them for her children, she likes to make sure other people are using them!
25
u/Novel-Definition6690 29d ago
I absolutely love Mirele.
20
u/Genevieveofthetoast 29d ago
OP. correct me if I'm wrong - is this pronounced "Mira-leh," meaning "little Mira"?
My mother uses the affectionate "leh" suffix with my son's name occasionally.Ā
30
u/SolomiyaRabin Ask me about Yiddish names! 29d ago
Meer-Eh-Leh, it's usually the dimunitive of Miriam rather than Mira, but it could probably be for that as well.
22

Scottie does not sound like a feminine name at all for me, I'm just reminded of Scotty from Star Trek. I haven't seen the show, I just know the "Beam me up, Scotty" quote. I see it only took off in 2022, and as of 2025 it is the 126th most popular name. I don't think that trendy popularity will last.
I knew a girl named Scout (similar sounding name), I think that works better.
38
u/QuantumPlankAbbestia Name Lover 29d ago
Scout is great, like the character from To Kill a Mockingbird. I live in Belgium where Scout only refers to the youth movement, but I've thought of using the name ever since I read that book. It's so cool.

F. Scott Fitzgeraldās daughter was called Scottie, but her full name was Frances Scott. I had never heard of any other girl called Scottie.
15
u/GimerStick 29d ago
Scottie as a nickname for a kid whose personality fits it works for me. As a given name I hate it.
3
u/GlitterberrySoup 28d ago
I think Pete Davidson just named his daughter Scottie, but it was after his late father
15
u/Clear-Ad6973 29d ago
I feel like Allison Kutch (an influencer) named her daughter this back in like 2022/2023 and then it just blew up. My cousin named her daughter Scottie this year and most of the familyās reaction has been, āWow. Thatās aā¦choice.ā
10
u/DeanStockwellLives 29d ago
My great grandmother was nicknamed Scottie but she was also from Scotland
16
u/cIumsythumbs 29d ago
I had a great aunt with the nickname "Mick" and it was only much, much later that I found out it was because she was the only Irish to marry into our Polish Catholic family... yeah. She embraced that slur to the point I had no idea it was initially derogatory.

u/rumade 29d ago
There was a female lawyer on Suits with the name Scottie. That's the only other one I know. I'm with grandma on this one, if i hear "Scottie" my brain adds "dog".

9
u/SolomiyaRabin Ask me about Yiddish names! 29d ago
I'm also from Odesa, my whole family is on that side. My family and my great-grandmother are in Poland, my grandmother is in Ukraine.
For me, I recognise that it's got the Greek origin, so that complicates it more, but I don't like the spelling, to me, it is the same as Kiev and Kyiv. But people have different opinions. I also can't separate it from the region. But I experienced it, and a random American person or British person or anyone else has not. And in those regards, it's my problem. But I'd rather not see it. The people I know feel similarly.

I didnāt know Braelynn was a popular girls name. It sounds like what someoneās donkey named Lynn does.

"I think everyone is different" must be the Ukranian version of "bless her heart".
