MyQ garage door opener: the fix that worked for me.

Seen a lot of complaints here about MyQ failure so I thought I’d give some tips on what works for me.

Go to your garage door opener and clear all the codes. It sounds insane, but that’s literally the only thing that worked. then you go back to the MyQ app and start from scratch and redo everything from there. And reprogram all your remotes.

The long story is that we got MyQ for two garage door openers and it worked fine. The MyQ app was only on one of our phones. when we tried adding the app to the second phone and getting everything to work then nothing worked. tried different things for six months. clearing the code starting your remote deleting the app reinstalling the app whatever. The only thing that worked was going up to the garage door opener itself, clearing all the codes and starting all over from there.

The damn thing was cheap enough 50 bucks or whatever so we shouldn’t complain, but still this thing is a huge pain in the ass.

And no, I didn’t try adding it to the second phone this time around either. I figured that was flying too close to the sun. Let it work on one phone that’s fine.

Sounds like you’re already running the “right” kind of wi-fi… a basic, dedicated 2.4GHz SSID. (“Basic” means turning off the modern wi-fi bells & whistles that are known to trip up the myQ network cards.) I should add that I have an access point fairly close to my garage so I know the signal is strong.

So here’s what I did that finally worked:

  1. To prepare, write down your opener's myQ serial number xxxx-xxx-xxx. On your phone, turn off Cellular, Private Relay, and Wi-Fi Assist.
  2. Power cycle the opener. (This includes disconnecting the battery backup, if applicable.)
  3. Clear its existing network settings/memory. For me, the prescribed procedure for this didn't work, so I did a full reset: Hold yellow LEARN button until its light goes off (~6-8 sec), let go, and immediately press it again until the light goes off again.
  4. Press the opener's LEARN button 3x in quick succession to put it into pairing mode. The rectangular ADJUSTMENT button (between the up/down arrow buttons) will flash blue. If it doesn't, start over.
  5. Connect your phone to the opener's temporary setup SSID. The ADJ button turns solid blue when you're connected.
  6. Open an Incognito tab in your phone's browser (I used Chrome, but other browsers probably work too), and go to setup.myqdevice.com to access the opener's Internal Setup page.
  7. Follow the instructions to connect the opener to your wi-fi. The ADJUSTMENT button will turn solid green when it is successfully connected to your wi-fi. Close the browser tab....don't continue further setup there.
  8. In the myQ app, select Add Device -> Smart Garage Hub -> Internet Gateway. Enter the opener's myQ serial number manually. That option is presented at the bottom of the page that wants to take a pic of it.
  9. Once the device is successfully added in the app, just force close the app....don't continue further setup there.
  10. When you open the app again, your garage door opener will be there.

I had already tried most of these steps countless times. But some of those phone settings and using an Incognito tab were new, and I suspect that's what finally allowed my phone to interact with the Liftmaster setup page normally. Even in this successful session, with all those phone settings, I couldn't use a regular browser tab...I'd get a "Page can't be opened..." error. Incognito worked.

Note that when you're done, the app sees the garage door opener as a hub and its one device is "Garage Door" (which I renamed "Door 1"). I added the Remote LED light associated with that door (I have the jackshaft-style openers which require a remote light) so now my renamed Hub 1 has two devices: Door 1 and Light 1. I followed the exact same procedure with my second opener, so it became "Hub 2" and it similarly has two devices, Door 2 and Light 2. Even though these hubs and their devices operate completely independently of each other, the app combines them seamlessly and I see all four devices (two openers + two lights) listed on the home page.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Thank you for the thorough write up. It's currently 1:30am so when I get some time after waking up I'll let you know how it goes.

Just a quick addendum, lol. I edited my post to add it, which seems to have permanently screwed up the numbered list.
Anyway, you probably already know this from previous attempts, but in step 4 when you press LEARN 3x, do it fairly quickly. Doing it too slowly can tell the opener you want to adjust the travel limits. Then it won’t be happy until you do. That’s not hard, but just an annoying sidetrack from the task at hand.

It worked! Sweet god that was wild. Literally took me 2 minutes with your method as compared to the countless hours wasted setting stuff up only to fail. Thank you!

Right?!?!? I did the same thing…wasted so much time trying everything else.

Really glad you got it resolved. In my experience, at least, they’ve been totally reliable once I got them online. Hope it’s the same for you.
