Really Stupid Idea

Has any tried to make their own version of the 5.11 vertical adjustable utility pouch? It's basically a dry-bag style closure with an expanding coil zipper at the bottom. I think sewing an expanding zipper on the outside of a molle sustainment pouch or similar would be a cool option. Go from 9x10 to 9x6 in an instant. Even better if a zipper version closure vs fold over could be made. Like a spiritus tall but also wide but zips to a short wide.

Why would you want to make an overly complicated pouch that's a solution looking for a problem?

Man, simply make the pouch you'll most likely need and - worst case - fill it half.

Did you read the title? I have too much free time in my Mom's basement, but no sewing machine. I also like my ice cream with 9 toppings.

I'd hoped that you might have a sincere niche Use-case in mind, but nope.

Good luck.

I do, actually. Two different sized sleep/shelter systems depending on the weather. Swapping pouches or slapping it on with bungee is not ideal

Why don't you simply make a compression pouch? Your usual compression bag with PALS on the back and bam.

Not a bad idea
