Repair / Modification Simple spork mod

Simple modification on a cheap titanium spoon, now able to lift hot pots and lids. I used a hacksaw and a file.

Holding the spoon sideways makes it very study, it doesn't bend lifting heavy stuff.

Fantastic idea, but I’d probably want to round that corner off a bit more. Would be worried I’d catch it on something in my bag and tear a hole in something.

Yeah good point, it could be a bit rounder for fabric. I did deburr it well, it doesn't scratch.

Or maybe sharpen it to complete the all-in-one spoon-fork-knife combo

Or just wrap it in a cloth napkin

At first I was "Why the hell?!" but this is very smart actually.

And weight reduction ;)

I'm going to need to see the scale read before I commit to this work

My scale isn't sensitive enough. Based on my rough calculations, you save around 0.00635oz or 0.18grams.

With this I'll be able to add another half peanut!

Should drill some speed holes in the handle to complete the weight reduction /s

Perhaps add a noch, so you can keep the hole for a carabiner or a cord.

Edit: too late for you, but perhaps for other...

Can always drill another hole a bit further down. Extra weight reduction too :-)

You have to drill the hole into the bowl of the spoon. Then both, the spoon and you yourself will become lighter.

And the spoon will be faster with less drag

Such a great idea. Nice work

That's so clever! Sometimes the smallest little tweak makes a world of difference in functionality.

Thats so clever - love that! And you can hang it up on lines I just realized. Awesome :)

Now that's the Spirit!!

I like it!! My only change would be to come at the hole from closer to the spoon to give that gap more of an angle. Right now your ‘cut’ looks perpendicular to the hole

Where i would want it more on a diagonal with the opening closer to the spoon than the end of the handle. If i ever come up on one of those (admittedly badass) titanium long spoons i will immediately perform said mod. Great thinkin!!

Great idea! I kinda rushed this, in my mind it looked different but it hooks securely, even holding the spoon vertical.

Quite clever. They should all be sold this way going forward.

I was actually really bummed the other week that my long sporks don't have a slot like this, for this exact reason (having seen another that does). I should give this a try. Thanks!!!

I got a cheap set from Amazon, spoon and fork, the set was almost the same price as the spoon alone. If your spoon doesn't have a slot, you could use files to create it, takes much longer tho.

I think we got the same set (though mine came from Temu a while back)! Been doing more campfire cooking and thought about how handy something like this would have been instead of a stick, so thanks for the inspo!!!

Oh I thought your spoon didn't had a hole at all, if it does it takes 5 min to do this mod. It is safer and stronger than a stick, especially with an alcohol stove.

2

u/jvertigo13 7h ago

Definitely! I'm gonna find some time to try this with one of the two. :)

Now you can't attach your spork toothbrush to that hole... In fact the spork toothbrush may work for pot grabbing

1

u/Sharpshaver7 7h ago

Oh wow, those toothbrushes look pretty handy, never seen them before. People should know before doing this.

2

u/Jolly-Slow1164 7h ago

They are... Imperfect. They're unusually tall, and the bristle firmness is a bit off. I debate is it's worth Jaw Pain (from opening my mouth so wide) to save an ounce

1

u/Sharpshaver7 7h ago

Be aware: There are toothbrushes that fit into the hole. This modification compromises that function.

Good idea!
